It's quite normal phase for young girls(middle school/high school) to have "romantic friendships". They're basically just practicing for the real deal, most of them will grow out of it and marry a man as adults. Men used to have these kind of deep friendships as well, just see David and Jonathan in Bible, but around the 20th century men stopped doing it because they didn't want to be mistaken for gay.
