They've never been a world leader in social policies and it especially showed with gay marriage, which was legal in basically every other western nation for like a decade. Yeah the US is a major world power, but they're not even close to being a leader in human rights.

Every country has a different history of LGBT presence and LGBT rights. The acronym LGBT come from the states, the rainbow flag came from the states, the pride parades came from the states. The bathroom thing hopefully only stays in the states.
