I think the way you're going about is the best way to be, when you do tell them I guess just don't make an issue of it and neither will they. My friends were friends for some time before they knew, not quite sure exactly how it came up now but I do recall I was just hanging out in the car with them and one asked me if I was gay. The reaction was alright. Again though, its all from person to person, generally, people who are quite open minded or just don't hold any real prejudices will have no issue with it. Very religious people may obviously but I've found most of them are again not bothered by it, naturally it goes against what they believe but they're also aware that people have their own lives to lead.
Its the 21sr century, just a century ago you'd be hunted, these days thankfully people are quite tolerable and open to the differences between people.
I'm very thankful for the diversity we have today, especially so in the developed world of course. Its all extremely politically correct and too much can be a bad thing in my mind, however were it not this wah I'd never have been able to accept myself and be contempt with my sexuality.
