Wondering if anyone has one or more songs that they like to listen to that just helps them come to terms with who they are. Doesn't matter if it's because of the lyrics, overall sound, or something else. Feel free to post how you identify as well, just to give some context!

Me: MtF trans and bisexual.

The lyrics are appealing to me.

I'm a homosexual dude. I've been into acoustic music for quite a while and am trying to record stuff myself. The entire record inspired me to try to do something myself. The song deals heavily with the basic state the author was in when he wrote the song. With how he felt small in a universe too big for him to understand.

It was so basic that I felt compelled to start something myself. And that feeling certain ways about certain things is natural.

Ok, first up we have the trans hardcore act G.L.O.S.S and their debut ep that dropped last year. Really great, hard hitting stuff, a perfect mix of anger at social transphobia, amd internalizing trans pride
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ_MPjyPwZU
Then we have Against Me!'s first album since frontwoman Laura Jane Grace came out as trans Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Here I would really just reccomend the few songs that directly deal with trans shit (Transgender Dysphoria Blues, True Trans Soul Rebel, fuckmylife666 and Paralytic States) everything else is a little too middle school pop punky for me, but your mileage may vary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3
isaRfr9aY&nohtml5=False
Next up, addressing social constructs of gender and masculinity that keeps so many of us from being ourselves, and the damage this can do, we have The Cures classic Boys Don't Cry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GkVhgIeGJQ&nohtml5=False
And last up this one goes out to all the folks out there too afraid to be themselves, or who don't know who they are yet. We know you're there, come join us. It's Ghost's Cirice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0Ao4t_fe0I&nohtml5=False
>>
>>6013815
That is really good! I gave it a listen and then read through the lyrics. Really got me thinking...

>>6013839
Geez, lots to go through! Personally, I loved the Against Me! album and Cirice. A friend of mine actually sent me Transgender Dysphoria Blues a while back - as soon as the singing started, all I could think was, "I've heard this before...but where?" I totally thought Cirice was going to turn into a screamo song from the intro (which isn't a genre I'm really a fan of...), but it turned out to be awesome! Now I have even more music on my "To Buy" list! XP

Gay male. I never had problems with accepting that I'm gay. I had a problem, at the time, dealing with being a NEET and breaking up. I would listen to this song ad nauseam to help me get through the day. So yeah, this is my personal I'm a loser song.

Perfume Genius is my go-to gay musician. He just really resonates with me. His music can be a bit sad, but he also makes me feel stronger and more confident in myself. Also Queen is a total jam and it has a great message https://youtu.be/Z7OSSUwPVM4

Also Le1f is an insanely gay rapper that makes me feel proud of who I am. He makes some pretty great music too. https://youtu.be/aUBzGKpHGAY
>>
>>6013815
The Antlers are great, sad music sometimes tho

As a queer musician who comes from the more "hardcore" side of things (i play in a genre fucked post-whatever project) ive really found inspiration in stuff from G.L.O.S.S. as mentioned earlier and also stuff like Botch (late 90s/early 2000s hardcore band with queer and gay members, lots of good lyrical content but theyre broken up now. The bass player plays in a fucking awesome instrumental rock band now though, russian circles.)

sometimes tho i need happy uplifting stuff to get through shit and then im kinda at a loss (aside from animal collective, which is kinda my go to happy band)
>>
AJJ and pretty much the entire Folk Punk genre helped me a lot as a gay dude who pretty much just came to terms with himself after 18 years of hardcore denial. This song hits home, especially with the last line.

Oh man as someone who could never really get into Hospice I was ready to write this off but I actually really ended up enjoying it
Maybe it's that I can't really get on with them when it's a whole album, or maybe this song really spoke to me, but I can't believe that Hospice overshadows this...

>>6017216
Perfume Genius is another artist that just doesn't really translate to albums for me :/
I've loved Queen since it was released (which was before I even realized I was trans- wow what a lack of self-awareness looking back...) but maybe I should give Too Bright a new look with fresh eyes...

>>6017571
Man, everytime I listen to AJJ it tells me something new, they really are amazing. I was just listening to Knife Man earlier today, and on top of always loving the message of People 2 II: Still Peopling, I found that the messages of Free Bird and Big Bird really jumped out at me and took on new meaning especially the line:
"Because it's harder to be yourself, than it is to be anyone else
I wish I was a little less of a coward"

Also, surprisingly shes not a tranny despite being full honmode.

Gay man here
Gonna post three things:
Arthur Russell - This Is How We Walk On The Moon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq5gjfN5lns
It's a very contemporary sounding song even though it was written in the late 80s. Arthur Russell was a gay man who died in 1992 of AIDS, but his music is, idk, so fresh sounding. This song is quite an optimistic song that I like to listen to when I'm in a dire situation
B 52's - Give Me Back My Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swBDlOk0V6Y
I know what you're thinking, but this is really different from the famous B-52s tracks (the super gay guy doesn't sing at all). It was a really early track for them, it came out in 1980 but they'd been performing it for a while before. The lyrics don't make much sense, but they still kinda chime. It's a good song for when you're feeling angry/spurned, and it always makes me feel kinda badass.
The Irrepressibles - In This Shirt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_2AgaZJWro
A gay love song, of sorts. Bittersweet and reflective, but very tender. Good if you're feeling vulnerable. It has a really conceptual music video that has a bunch of metaphors but if you're not an art fag then just ignore it and listen to the sounds

This >>6023886 although it probably deterred me from understanding that I wasn't happy with my gender, age 16. I had recently learned about "genderqueer", hadn't heard of dysphoria or many trans things but understood I wasn't female... this song definitely resonated with me a lot, especially since my boyfriend and I had similar haircuts and aesthetics.

>>6027223 is a great song.
Oliver Twist by Avey Tare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuWDvzZMV9U and Bonfire Of The Vanities by Panda Bear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZWLQKVwCSA ['be like an ordinary man'] give me some weird feelings related to this sort of topic.
Shoutout to What would I want... Sky by Animal Collective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSmuzEzeAeY "When the point of horizon is hiding from you, What would you want, sky?"

The most influential/motivational album for me is Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjpk9e_vB8Y It has really illuminated me, helps to lift me out of depression in a constructive way with some strong themes I interpret from certain lyrics including transcending society, defining your dreams, following passion, overcoming not feeling okay, and living in the moment.

>As someone who could never get into Hospice...

Hospice was an extremely refined, well thought out and flawlessly executed concept album. It overshadows all of Antlers' other works because it's just that good. In The Attic Of The Universe is a great record, but it's only 26 minutes long revolving around a single chord progression and the sounds capes built upon those chords. It's great but the only real "song" in a sense that you could call it a complete song are the intro song and Stairs To The Attic. The in between tracks are mostly just exploring the atmosphere the first and last song create via sounds.
Hospice has more actual songs and lyrical value put into it.
>>
>>6031987
Ahh ok well I enjoyed the song for what it was then...
And I should clarify, when I say I could never get into hospice I meant I could never get into Hospice in the way I see other people do. I think it is a beautiful, deeply moving, excellent piece of art, I just don't think it's GOAT like a lot of people seem to...

and just because I'm bumping so I may as well add a song, this one really helps me when I'm feeling particularly suicidal

I think people celebrate it because it communicates a story so easy and simple to understand for anyone listening. It's a story people can easily invest in. Without a doubt, Hospice is a universal message that anyone who can enjoy the music and speaks English is able to understand and immerse themselves in. I can't think of another record that has managed to achieve such a status. That's why it's considered GOAT by some, I think.

Other than that, don't kill yourself, there's too much good music to listen to.

This guy started having an actual career last year, but when I heard this album first it was when someone, probably him, posted it on /mu/. I was young (15) and very uncomfortable with myself. Half way through the second song he pulls out the line "it's been a year/ since we first met/ it don't know if / we're boyfriends yet" and I realised the album is more or less entirely about a gay relationship. I listenned to it obsessively for quite a few months.
