It's not a direct metaphor so much as what Tolkien used to call "applicability." Pearl hates herself to the point where she can't function, and while this is applicable to trans folk, it's also applicable to most of the cis women I know and a fair amount of the men. Tons of people of all kinds are just as obnoxiously consumed by self-loathing as she is. They don't realize that everyone else sucks just as much as they do, and their hatred would be a lot more useful if it were directed outward instead of inward.
