Shaving shouldn't really cause much irritation. What kind of blade is he using? Double edge ones work the best in my experience. And yes, lotion is good after a shave and shower.

There are products for before, during, and after a shave that are supposed to reduce complications such as skin irritation. I use Truefitt & Hill and ArtNaturals products and shave only after showers. No problems here.
