This is pretty brilliant manga, btw, and the only one that I've found that has FtM protagonist. Even real, genuine MtF protags are very very rare FtMs are literally unheard of.
Besides the protagonist Taichi (the other protagonist) may be MtF and the antagonist is absolutely MtF, though extremely screwed up one.

It depends, there's a fine line between what would be acceptable and not depending on how ugly you're talking about.
If you're talking like horribly disfigured then it seems kind pointless since either way you're going to end up with soul crushing body image issues whether it be from dysphoria or from being disfigured.
At a point it becomes a lot easier to function in society as a passable tranny than a disfigured cis woman and you can still get srs and stuff as a trans girl, though that still means no birth giving (though what's the chance of a disfigured girl finding someone to make babies with anyway?).
Though if you just mean someone conventionally unattractive, then I'd probably choose that since just like trans girls can get ffs, cis girls can also get facial surgery.
It's just one of those questions that it really impossible to know unless you're actually faced with it in real life and currently that is too far off to really matter.

Bollocks, I'd gladly switch bodies with a rather obese man if it meant getting genuine male junk! Dieting for a year or two and getting some skin removal surgery doesn't seem like more of a hassle and expense then what one needs to do as a ftm, anyway. How ever, if the guy was 600 pounds or some extreme shit like that, I might have second thought, you can end up a bit deformed at that weight... and have some serious health issues. But I'm not saying I would not consider it at all anyway...
