At least for Belgium and France, the size is about 6"6, not G"4 and 6"3. I read most of the studies—I mean, I really went through each of them—and it's the most common size cited (16,25~16,75cm). There was an artice in BJU International a couple of months on that subject. It's still free to read, I think.
Concerning the thread, I don't really what to add. Of course the size, both the length and the width are important. I think it's more of having an “impressive” one since many objectively big ones are discarted as ugly. It's a matter of opinion but it looks like it concerns a lot of people.
