I have that fear too, just because I really don't like divorce. Just the whole idea of it terrifies me. Not even just breaking up but just having to deal with courts like that and what if we have kids and then I just hold marriage to a standard that I feel divorce is kinda unethical or at least a sign of weakness in a person.
Plus even though I've been with gf for a years now we hardly argue and that worries me more because I'm scared we might not know how or that the first big argument will break us in some way.
It's helped to talk it out. My mom and have both given me some solid advice on how to make a marriage work or a relationship in general over decades. Priest and deacon have given us talks, her old grandma that was married for ever gave us advice, then we also talked with each other a lot.
Just about what we both want out of life, how we'd like to raise our children, what are our long time financial/home plans, goals for work, what if one of us develops a wondering eye, how to tell each other if one of us is getting fat, important shit like that. And even if it comes to the worst we've both decided on how to properly separate without as many issues, how to split up theoretical kids, how to split estates and money, all that plus what's really grounds for divorce and what just means we should see counseling.
A big part of me always wanted to just live with her for a few decades and then marry at like 50 when there's obviously no risk for divorce. But more and more it's bothering me to not have her as "wife". I was gonna just wait till 30 because even though divorce rates are 50/50, after 30 the odds get a lot better. But then going against that is that we wanna adopt and it's already gonna be hard adopting as a lesbian couple, gonna be harder if it comes off as a recently married couple.
Besides my mom thinks we're already technically common law at this point now that gay marriage is legal.
