Hey /k/ I'm interested in learning about precision bolt action rifles for long distance target practice and hunting. What is the general price for one? Do you have one? Could you recommend anything for me?

You know before I make a major purchase I do hours of research on the Internet. Reading stuff, seeing if there is a consensus, deciding what's best for myself and my particular set of habits.

You on the other hand seek someone to inform you, and just hope it works out for the best and that you followed the correct advice. You're stupid, and no better than someone who plays the lottery hoping for the best.

I have information that might be valuable to you, but I choose to withhold it because you're a spoon-fed retard mindless fuck.

TL;Dr

Figure it out cockface.

Gonna hijack your thread 'cause you can't be bothered to even begin looking for yourself:

Is the Remington 700 ADL a bad choice for a first precision rifle? I've never owned one before, and was told a .308 Remington 700 is a good start. The 700 ADL at my local Academy is like $400, should this work fine? If it does, that means I can put a little bit more in the glass.
>>
The 700 has lots of after market....

But with a few exceptions ( like the 700 40x and the 5r) most need a good deal of work out of the box (blue printing, lapping , re barreling, new stock). And as such there are better options in the market.

Personally. If you want in to the game at a reasonable price. Get a howa 1500 barreled action from brownells and a bell and carlson medalist stock.

Swap the spring out on the howa trigger , bed the action in the b&c stock, mount some ken farrell rings and a harris bipod.

As for scope if your budget minded get a swfa. If you can afford $1000 get a vortex viper pst or burris xtr2
>>
>>29443450
What is the barrel profile?
A sporter? Varmit? #6? sendero?

If it is a thin , sporter style i wouldnt unless your fine rebarreling.

Regardless your going to want to ditch the stock and trigger.
>>
>>29443974
I'm not really sure what profile, but IIRC the barrel definitely is NOT the big thick barrel I've seen on other models.
http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/remington-700-adl-308-win-bolt-action-centerfire-rifle
Would it be "good enough" to just get started, or should I look at a different model? The 700 ADL is the only one my local Academy has stocked.

Also, I have access to a Tikka T3 Lite from Bass Pro, but I didn't really like the "empty", light feel of the rifle which is why I was looking at Remington 700s.
>>
How accurate are factory remington 700 barrels? I get that I'd want to get it blueprinted and a while.mess of other things, but would I need to replace the barrel? Or just have the gunsmith blueprint?
>>
>>29443078
Hey O.P. I'm in the same boat you are. I look forward to learning with you. As one student to another I figured I'd share snipercentral.com with you. I found it today and I'm not sure if this is a meme site or not but it might be worth looking at. They seem to have "entry level packages" and an article about how to select what you need but I'm not sure if they are a bargain or a con-job. They also seem to have information on things like ghillie suites and the like along with firearm reviews.

I think the best way to figure out stuff like what you want to do is to try stuff at a local gun range and with family or friends. I myself will be hunting for the first time this fall with my father and uncle and trying out a "308 british" along with my dad's 30-06.

>>29443365
Neato, I'll be sure to study. Thanks

>>29443450
The Remmington 700 was the rifle in one of the two "entry level packages" ( the other was the HOWA 1500; http://www.snipercentral.com/sniper-central-entry-level-tactical-rifles/ ) I mentioned earlier. I get the feeling they are a bit pricy for "entry level" packages BUT I'm curious as to if they are a good deal in terms of price to product ratio. Hopefully some more experienced shooters will be able to answer that for us, O.P.
>>
>>29444269
The remington that they use for the base package is a remington sps.

The howa is a better choice.

Tighter tolerances, better extractor, better barrels. Lower price.

You can build your own version of the sniper central gun for less.

Barreled action (howa 1500) from brownells is $430

Bell and carlson stock(has aluminium bedding blocks and is drop in fit) for $271

20 moa base $60
Rings $55
Bushnell scope $249
Harris bipod $73

Total $1130

Use retail me not and coupon codes and you can knock that down .

In short for a much better action/barrel and stock your looking at $700 if you get the howa 1500 and b&c stock.
>>
>>29444168
Your going to spend the money to get it printed.... Do so when you put a better barrel on it.

The stock adl has a lot of accuracy variability. They can be a .75moa rifle or a 4 moa rifle. Many that i have seen and used, borrowed are 1.5-2.25 moa out of the box.

Dont get me wrongm i like the adl. Thry are the best basis for a project gun.

Buy it, part it out

True and blue print the reciver
Buy a new barrel
New stock
Glass

And it is good to go.
>>

I dont know, but you don't need to spend a lot of money. A good friend of mine who was really into shooting (he competed on teams and is probably a better shot than 95 percent of the folks here) used a airgun scope on his .22 that went up to 20 power. Now that was tough to fire at 100 yards offhand.

My .22 has a scope from like 1950 that literally adjusts with screws, no fancy ball detentes.

While I agree OP is a fag, you are pretty faggy as well.

Asking questions and about opinions is part of the research and checking if there is a consensus.

Don't be a fag, fag

Not had hands on one yet but from what I've heard around the range and seen, * 300M : 6-5, 308 and 300 win all grouped around 2.9 inches as long as the shooters did their parts.

Biggest gripe I heard was that it fit together oddly. -shrug-
>>
>>29445722
>about 3 inches at 300
Aren't Savage M10's known for sub MOA accuracy? Like by half? Perhaps I will look into going that route.
>>
Sauer 200STR in 6.5X55 cal, cant go wrong with that.
>>
>>29443078
Go cheap first.
Get something in .308 with a thick, short barrel, mossberg had a few.
Then work on fundamentals, trigger controll, wind calls, ect.
Then when you think you have gotton as good as you can on that gun, keep practicing with it for another year, if you still have interest, you have probably gained the skills to out perform what the cheap rifle can mchanically do.
During this whole time spend hours a day researching precicion rifles, calibers, and handloading.
But heres a quick rundown of basics
>barrel rigidity is good: shorter barrel and thicker the barrel, the more rigid
>stock rigidity is good: glass bedding (theres other bedding methods as well, also aluminum chassis and such)
>Trigger is huge, light, smooth, crisp, with very little travel
>optics is a 3000 word discussion, so just google till your eyes bleed
Caliber:
God tier non-magnums (cheaper to shoot generally, and easier on you and the gun)
In order of my opinion of best to worst
>.270 win
>.243
>6.5 creedmore
>.308
>30-06
>.25-06
god tier magnums (in order of best overall performance, not price, though im excluding anything over .338 caliber, because theres only ~3 of them for long range precision shooting, and you can easily look them up)
>.338 Lapua
>7mm RUM
>.338 win ultra mag
>7mm WSM
>300 RUM
>.270 WSM
>.338 win mag
>.300 win mag
>>
>>29445760
Sure it's capable, but the stars have to a line.

If you can get 3 inch groups 10/10 times on an open range with wind you're doing something right, sure you might throw some 1.9's or 1.5's even but that's more about the bullet fairy than anything.

Again, don't get me wrong, it can be done, but I wouldn't bet on it being an every group sort of thing.

Hey there, I'm >>29444269 with another set of questions. I know >>29444676 said something about a "retail me" and I'm wondering if you can tell me what that means. I'd also like to know where to find coupon codes for firearms online.

While I doubt I'll buy my rifle from Sniper Central can anybody tell me if their configuration guide ( http://www.snipercentral.com/sniper-weapon-system-selection-and-setup/ ) is decent?

Why would a HOWA be a better choice than the Remmington 700 SPS?

What about a Bushnell Elite 10x40mm Tactical scope or Redfield Revolution/TAC 3-9x40mm?

Does a muzzle break really make a huge difference?

Outside of Sniper Central are there other communities online for long-rifles/precision shooting? I'm not sure I need all of the tactical articles ( stalking, making ghillie suites, etc. ) that Sniper Central has and may want to look at more sport-based communities.
>>
Look into the Savage .338. I've got two of them.

Shoots amazing. Shoots better in my opinion than the PGW that the CF uses (I've shot both extensively).

It's a gigantic world, precision shooting. Something as small as changing the grains in your reloads can be the different between sub MOA or not at even 300 metres.

Source: Family friend is a sniper and I've shown with him over 20 times. He's taught me a lot. It's addicting because it is so technical and there is so much to learn.

A guy I work with got a RPR in 6.5 which is pretty neat to shoot... Soft recoil and with a break, stays flat on target after the shot. Fully adjustable ergos, 20moa rail built in, and a lot of aftermarket support already. That said, savage just released the 10t in 6.5 which will be a super budget champion if you can find one... .260, 6.5cm, and 6.5 lapua whatever all seem pretty even other than brass component selection. 7mm-08 seems pretty cool too...

True. Everyone looks over Vortex for companies like Leupold, but Vortex is a much better brand, in my opinion. Their customer service is outstanding, and their warranty is for life. They also have a 40% federal employee/veteran discount. With it, I bought a Viper PST 6-24×50 FFP MRAD scope, a 1000m rangefinder, and a single piece scope mount for a little less money than I would have to pay for just the optic. They're definitely worth looking up.

Is a Savage Axis II XP in .223 a good first rifle for target shooting and small game? The reviews are pretty decent and it's cheap.
>>
>>29449775
It's not a precision platform, and small game is ... small.

You can hunt rabbits at 300m with a good scope, but I wouldn't go much further&smaller.
>>
>>29449775
They do make a heavier barrel version, but cabelas also sells the 12fv with a 26" heavy varmint barrel for $415 which would be a good starting point.
>>
>>29443078
Get a savage model 12 in 223.
Quality match ammo can be bought any where or reloaded much cheaper than anything else.
223 will shoot great out to 600 yards with heavy match bullets. people shoot things with them at 1000 yards, but that's pushing it.
With 223 you will be able to shoot great groups out to 600 yards consistently(if you don't suck)
it you do suck the non existent recoil and sub $.25/per shot cost of match grade reloads will let you shoot/practice way more than a 308 or any other "Long Range" caliber
with a 223 you will become master of wind calling.

TL;DR.
buy a fucking savage model 12 in 223 and shoot until you are good enough to justify something bigger.
>>
>>29451517
An additional advantage of the savage rifles is the barrel nut. if you decide to switch from a 223 to something like a 6.5 SLR all you have to do is buy a pre-fit match grade shilen barrel from thebarrelman.com for $300 and a savage .308 bolt assembly for $100. it will take 15 minuets tops to install these parts in your living room and viola! your 223 is now a 6.5 SLR with identical optics and erganomics!
The best part is that this is much cheaper than buying a new rifle, and you can switch between 223/6.5 whenever you want.

short version: buy a savage in 223 and a barrel/bolt in something bigger later. it will cost way less and shoot just as well.
>>
How is this for a starter?

>short action in .223
>rebarrel/bolt in .308
>rebarrel in 6.something
>>
>>29451828
Sounds perfect. the 6 or 6.5 whatever will be better for long range than the 308. if you decide to get a 308 barrel I would just get a take off barrel with a sporter contour to use for hunting.
For a dedicated long range round I would recommend either the 6 or 6.5 SLR.

Why howa over Remington 700?

Better machining (No need to blueprint) , one piece bolt, m16 style extractor, recoil lug is machined into receiver and is beefier,
Receiver is beefier. Better stock barrel.
Much much better trigger.

The down side to the howa. Less aftermarket

Hey guys. I'm an engineering student and I had an idea for a marksman rifle feature. For semi autos would it be possible to turn off the gas system quickly so that that the gun is manually charged like a boltgun? Less varriation from the specified dimention.

More consistant batch to batch.

Higher quality control standards and more willing to scrap a part that does not meet expectations.

And since I'd be changing pretty much everything but the action anyway, could I get a 243 or 270 win, and use that as a base for a 308 build? Also, would this be the cheapest/easiest way to get a remington 700 receiver?
>>
test
>>
>>29457398
Yes a 270 is a short action and so is the 308.
>>
>>29457402
Thank you, I'll do that then. Now, I do have a question that no one has answered so far, and would appreciate your help. So I've heard that the 2 piece bolt used in most remington 700 is inherently weaker than an aftermarket 1 piece bolt. So, is this true? And if it is, should I get a one piece bolt for this build?
>>
>>29457431
Yes it is true.

Aftermarket bolt gives a number of advantages, better machining, and you can get a better extractor design (sako or m16) and a better bolt knob
>>
>>29457442
Thank you. You mentioned bolt knobs, but it seems all the ones I see are obnoxiously large, at least for my taste. Is there anything like a smooth ball knob? Similar to the mauser bolt knob?
>>
>>29457442
Also, it seems ptg is most prevalent result for 1 piece bolt. Is this company reputable? Do they make good 1 piece bolts?
>>
>>29457402
I don't think 270 is short action...
>>
What do you guys think of muzzleloaders/black powder? I heard you don't need a permit for something like Knight or Vortek.
>>
>>29457913
270 is based on the 30-06 and is definately a long action. For a dedicated lr rifle though, this isn't really a bad thing. If you chamber your rifle in a short action round, like the 6.5 SLR, creedmore ect. it lets you cut the throat extra long, the advantage of this is that you can seat 140 gr vld's a long ways out of the case. This gives more powder capacity and therefore allows for higher velocity.

It's supposed to teach you marksmanship technique before you deal with the actual technical parts of long range shooting. If you can bring your groups to the absolute best that your rifle and ammunition can give you, then you've pretty much mastered trigger control and breathing control. There is absolutely no reason for a beginner shooter to start on a long range rifle if they can barely do well on a normal rifle at a normal range. The costs to get better are retarded. I'd say start off with .22 or an intermediate rifle caliber before working with full power rifle rounds, simply so you get the muscle memory needed to shoot consistently.

100 yards in not long range

Bring your .22LR to 300m, and then you'll start learning about ballistics.

If you wanna go really hard in the paint, I've heard from a guy who knows a shitton about guns that Surgeon makes incredible rifles in some very unique low calibers, as well as the common ones.
Sako has a very good reputation for long-distance hunting rifles.
Remington's high end Model 700's are very good as well, my grandfather owns the Sendero in .300 Win Mag and uses it to hunt Grizzlies in the AK. The lower end ones, and non trim (Base model) have various complaints about QC lately, so I've heard.
My dad gave me his 1969 Anniversary BDL, and it is a fucking incredible rifle, very solid, smooth, stiff action and thick, easy trigger pull.
Have a look at some of the more obscure companies, or you could start with an intermediate caliber Savage, I've heard they also make pretty good "tactical" and target rifles.
I wouldn't recommend going out and dropping several grand on a rifle chambered in a caliber like .338, .300, or another insanely powerful caliber, you have no use for such power until you have the skill to reach out to several thousand feet easily.
The guy I mentioned earlier had a Surgeon action that he had put into an Accuracy International stock system, with a Swarovski optic. Beautiful gun, but he was really into it.
What he said is what I have said, no reason to get a huge caliber rifle unless you are able to use it effectively.
Good glass is very important too, it doesn't matter if you have a 3K rifle, if you have a Redfield optic mounted on it, take a look at Leupold, Nikon, Swarovski, all of those will give you exactly what you pay for.
Good luck, spend a lot of time researching each weapon you consider, and if you buy used, ensure you get a good year for QC from the company.

Hey guys; can you tell me what you would think of pic related as a first "precision" big LR?

here is a good place to look at a wide range of available rifles

Those prices are astounding. When they say the condition is "new, out of the box" they don't just mean they are "like new" right?
>>
>>29462059
The price on that Henry Bigboy is amazing if that is a brand-new rifle.
>>
>>29462094
I've never noticed that term. Call and ask.
>>
Are all remington 700 reciever the same? Like if I was to get an adl, the cheapest model, and throw away everything but the reciever, and use that as a base for a build, would that be good?
>>
>>29462326
Why not just buy a better receiver.
The higher qual Rems are going to have better receivers, yes.

>>29443310

>>
>>29462326
Get one of the higher quality Remingtons and you won't have to replace as much in the first place. A 5r will come with a decent barrel, and Hs-precision stock. Hell, if you want, just buy a barreled action and throw away the trigger. You don't actually have to buy a full rifle to begin with.

It's like you've never even heard of TrackingPoint.

My father bought a 5R and it is by far he best bolt action rifle I have ever used. He replaced the trigger and that's it. It is extremely tough, has fallen out of moving vehicles and tree stands multiple times.
>>
>>29464854
Where to find a barreled action? Everywhere I look says out of stock. Remingtons site says that are available through ffls, but I'd rather avoid my lgs as much as possible.

This. Get a basic platform, put your money into ammo and range time.

yes I know what a tolerance is but you can still be within 1 thou and have a shit gun. you can still have a loose bolt jiggling around.

don't mind me I'm being retarded. why that would happen I don't know. but technically you still have to have tighter clearances to take advantage of the tighter tolerances.
>>
>Precision beginner
1. MOST rifles are capable 100-300 yards, but are ideal for 100 or less (Average AR, AK etc)
2. You can get dedicated or specialized rifles to get accurate to 300-600 yards (DMR ARs and AKs)
3. You need a dedicated platform to go beyond 600 yards, mostly bolt guns in this category, and you'll need larger calibers to have enough velocity for the impact to matter at these ranges

THAT said, you need to know what you want to shoot. Unless you're a pro, I don't suggest you try to get a 600+yd rifle. Aim for the 300-600 range, which opens the door and keeps the cost down.

Savage makes GREAT out of the box 300-600yd rifles in .223 and other calibers. I've seen some kits with an ok optic, 4-16, and a match barrel/trigger for under $500. I suggest that.

Do not get a Remington 700, the rifle sucks now and is shit out of the box. Requires a lot of $$ before it turns into a good shooter

>>29461277
That's expensive as fuck. Can you even feed it ?

Best choice imo would be to buy a Tikka T3 CTR and swap the stock when you have the money.
>>
Question: if you had $1,000 to spend, taking ammo into consideration, what boltgun would you buy?
Probably 308, right, since creedmoor rifles are more expensive?
>>
>>29467661
Maybe it's just not enough money to get an accurate rifle, scope, and ammo?
>>
>>29467661
Personally I'd save and get a .308 Ruger Precision Rifle and budget glass. It would end up costing ~1500 but you'd have a rifle that is better than you for a while. Once the optic is what limits you, spend the money on quality glass.

Otherwise a .308 tikka or savage and budget glass.

I'd rather spend more on a rifle that is quality than a cheap rifle and later a quality rifle, as it is cheaper in the long run. The savings buys you a respectable amount of ammo.

Regardless, learn on .308 and if you get serious rebarrel to 6.5.

Here is my entry level precision rifle. It is a REM 700 AAC-SD .308 with leupold one piece base, leupold rings, Nikon 4-12, cheap bipod and cheap cheek rest. I'm into this setup for about $600 and plan on upgrading the stock and optic eventually.

I've only been out to shoot it once but was getting 1-2 inch groups. I plan on upgrading the scope to a Primary Arms 4-16 mil dot scope and was looking at the magpul stock. Eventually this will host a suppressor as well.

Tips, opinions?
