They use special ammo to get the flash, if they don't just cgi it which is more common these days. What's correct is rarely what looks cool and I don't really care about "realism" so much as that they stop doing stupid shit.
For example i was watching Daredevil season 2 and the punisher character shields himself from bullets with what appears to be a price of wood. That's the kind of shit that ruins the scene. So to answer your question, what they should do is go get some real tame time and shoot some different real world targets. Shoot up a car.
