Canukistan here. Just got my PAL/R. Thinking of getting a Remington 870 for skeet/trap shooting. Please tell me why that's retarded.

Because new Remington kind of sucks, and I say this as a Remington fanboy. My first gun was an 870 and my favorite gun is a different 870 but I wouldn't touch Remington now unless it's one of their high end products, which apparently Cerberus doesn't cheap out on.

I'd go for a Mossberg 500 or 590 since I have experience with those, but I've heard good things about the Benelli Supernova. My roommate has an H&R Pardner pump, which is a decent Norinco 870 clone that's only about $200. The same gun in a different configuration is also imported as the IAC Hawk.

Generally speaking, yes. Barrel length controls the effective distance of your shot and chokes control spread. Even with a wide choke you won't see much spread at effective distances.

Generally the cheapest stuff is practice ammo, often called target loads. Shot size for such loads will usually be between 6 and 8 and the shells will usually be 2.75". Anything longer will usually be buckshot or slugs or birdshot meant for migratory birds that fly high in the air.
Try out several different brands of cheap ammo, some guns will eat some brands and not work with others. For instance, my 20Ga. 870 will eat pretty much anything but Winchester white box but can eat Estate just fine. My dad's Beretta Will eat WWB but not Estate.

SXP guy here. It is great and has a buttery smooth action. But the after market truly sucks. I wanted to accessorize mine up for autism reasons and there isn't much in the way of options. Go mossberg if you want to make it your own, if not then SXP is a great choice.

Long barrels tend to be better, but you can shoot skeet with a HD shotgun and it's a great way to get used to handling your gun

500 has some parts which are made out of plastic so it's cheaper.
The 590 has these parts in metal and are much nicer.
