Where do you imagine all of that happening?
If WW3's going to happen it's likely to happen largely in N. Africa and barely affect the US at all outside of costing us an assload more money.

In many wars more civilians then servicemen die. Part of the reason is that the civilians do not know what to do. Th emilitary knows a smidgeon more but still not enough.
Case in point: Europe 1930's. All the signs were there and people looking back wonder why more people did not react and flee while they could. Hitler was labeled just a funny guy and irony is maxed out by a genuinely funny guy demonstrating how mad he was in the Great Dictator. Hindsight brings clarity.

Chances are you will not be given a choice but your record will determine it. Been scout? Infantry for you. Been a sailor? Navy. Logistics skills? Could be supply chain work. Etc.
Take Canadian provinces largely spared of nuclear decimation and restore a degree of "old west" like politics. Have settlements appoint shariffs appropriate to their community dynamics. Once settlements have acclimated to stable trade and commerce, establish a territory largely residing in the northern and central regions of alberta canada. Become post apocalyptic industrial presence. Become Baron of said territory. Established Republic of settlements to lead after age and sickness from fallout take their toll. Vast territory and Republic live on generations after my passing.
What would happen to welders in a case like this?
Would we be kept as valuable repair and maintenance guys or would we be sent to the meat grinder too?

Society grows more and more prosperous, tolerance increases and a feeling of invulnerability follows.
The Empire dissolves first slowly from the borders but rots morally from the core to the top
Collapse is quick. And brutal. Rome went from being a megalopolis to a village.
Aftermath is also interesting. Specialisation is reduced, equality increases and income becomes far more even.
Then starts the long, hard climb out of the darkness.
