Finally got my hands on the original bullpup.

This is the only prototype designed for a scope, and to my knowledge the only Thorneycroft in public circulation.

Designed by James Thorneycroft, the rifle was the intended to be a smaller infantry rifle that could be used in trenches and on horseback. The rifle was roughly eight inches shorter and fifteen percent lighter than other rifles of the time. Ultimately, it was rejected do to horrible ergonomics and unbearable recoil. The Lee Enfield wound up winning the contract.

Figured some pictures where in order.

It was a straight pull bolt action.

Because of the scope, the bolt handle was turned down and inward. Actually, very difficult to operate.

Straight compared to the patent. You still had to rotate it.

Anyway, here's the bolt unlocked.

You can see why a bent bolt handle was needed. Typical two lug, 90 degree bolt throw.

Yes, see >>30647638

There where several "prototypes", 1901-1905. The rifle started looking like the patent >>30647699 and ended looking like this.

After his design was rejected John started working with Moubray Farquhar, another designer to improve it. The later models such as mine and this one are examples of this.

Boof, what is to your knowledge the first automatic rifle?

The Winchester historian claims JMB built the first one in 1877 from a model 76 by putting a flapper on a lever on the muzzle that cycled the bolt via muzzle blast. The prototype is on display in Cody, WY.

I think your right.
I doubt it was the first. But it seems to be the first to have any kind of sizeable production.

Christ. did this person not have human hands or something? Shame the bullpen bolt action never caught on but I suppose it had too many problems to benefits when just cutting down normal rifles and maybe giving special ammunition made more financial sense.

Mershon & Hollingsworth had a patent for a self-cocking revolver around 1863, they did also build a spring driven percussion revolving rifle that could fire in a fully automatic mode.
That might be the first.

Pic related is their revolver, it started as a .44 Colt Model 1860. Their revolver patent (39,825) dates to 1863.
Their rifle I posted in >>30650192 and the patent for that dates to 1855. https://sportingoutdoors.blogspot.com/2008/02/mershon-and-hollingsworth-revolving.html
Production of the rifles was thus around the mid to late 1850's.
Remaining number unknown, total produced unknown, further details of the company beyond their patents is unknown.
But yes, they made an automatic black powder revolving rifle.

It goes back earlier, patent US12470 from 1855 is it, but displays a revolver.
