I'm thinking about buying a cheap shotgun.

I am mainly considering the Remington 870 since it has a proven history with military and police forces, and since I can walk into any Wal-Mart in the country and find one. What's the consensus on /k/? What's the best shotgun for the least money?

An older 870 will keep the autists at bay because muh Freedom Group quality control derp. A mossberg 500A or 590 is also a great choice. 500A is cheaper and easier to find but the 590 has a metal trigger guard/housing.

One of my friends did say something about the newer 870s being of lesser quality compared to the older ones but didn't elaborate. Couldn't tell if it was bullshit or not.
>>
The Remington 870 Express is Remington massively fucking up quality control in order to put out shotguns at the same price bracket as Chinese slave labor factories do for their 870 clones.

The guns that Remington actually give a shit about are the 870 Police models that are delivered to police agencies and the base for the Modular Combat Shotgun delivered to the military. Those are in the $600 and up range. If you have the cash to order a Police model then do so.

If you're lucky you can find a used Wingmaster, used Police, or an older Express model from the early 1990s, in which case go ahead and get it.

Mossberg delivers a better quality product than the Express in a similar price range, though they do have sloppy fit and finish. Get that if you want a cheap shotgun and not a Chinese 870 clone like the Hawk or IAC or Pardner Pump.

That last sentence was poorly phrased.

Get a Mossberg if you don't want to get a Chinese 870 clone, which is perfectly functional and in many cases better built than the cheaper Remingtons.

I haven't experienced any of the older 870s but I did get my waifu a youth/compact 20ga model. It seems solid.

just grab a Mossberg 500.
Even more reliable, easier to maintain, got proven track record with cops and grunts too, and the newer versions aint fucked up like 870s.

Are Ithica shot guns still good?

The model 37 is so sexy

Hawk 982
Don't pay more than $190 for it
>>
>>30647326
if you're fine with mere 12/70 cartridges.
>>
>>30646926
Get a H&R Pardner at Academy. Still $200 bucks and has a machined extractor and aluminum trigger guard assembly. It is the same as a Hawk 982 with a slight humpback. Both are rem 870 clones.

12ga isn't good enough now days?

there's different sized 12ga cartridges, sonny.

12/70mm is the most common, oldest one around, and gets the job done. Most shottys are at least 12/76 these days, and many hunting types are up to 12/89.

it's all about how versatile you want your gun to be. I've seen some 12/89 Mossberg pumps go just as cheap as their standard 500 series guns.

I did not know this. I've only owned rifles and pistols. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I will be looking elsewhere then.

Is there some shotguns that will shoot them all or do they each need either 70mm or 76mm etc?

The longer chamber ones can fire ALL the shorter cartridges.
So, 12/89 can fire /89, /76 and /70, no problems.

However, if you try to fire a long cartridge in a shorter chamber gun, you risk blowing up the entire weapon, as the head of the cartridge "opens up" and ends up expanding into the barrel, potentially blocking the pellets from traveling out.

Also, before I forget about it, it's the European way of naming the ammo in millimeters (ie 12/70). Americans name them in inches, like the 12/70 would be just 12ga 2.5".
>>
>>30647567
He's trolling you lad, 12/70 means standard 12 gauge 2 3/4" shotshells, 12/76 would be 3" inch shotshells.
3" shotshells are "magnum" shells that carry more projectiles and possibly more gunpowder. A shotgun will shoot what it's rated for and anything smaller.

Most modern shotguns will do up to 3" shells.

Yeah theyre great but you have to find an old one.
I use an Ithaca 37 DSPS for home defense, nice, short, and classic.

Get a maverick 88, OP. Make sure to get the long tube, 7+1

Not trolling anything, you illiterate moron.
Most Ithacas were mere 12/70, aka 2 3/4", and thus won't fire 3" and 3.5" shells.

A Mossberg Maverick 88, it's sells for about $200 and is an almost exact copy of a Mossberg 500.
The only differences are that the safety is on the trigger guard, a different foregrip, and that a few of it's parts were made in Mexico.

There seems to be no real complaints about the Maverick out there and it comes with a warrantee.
