As a New Yorker I can safely say as soon as I turned 18 I left one of those cartoon outlines behind because I got out of there so fucking fast.
I lived in Utica for most of my life, after leaving I realize what a giant fucking evil shithole NY state is.
The basic plan of the govt there seems to be
>Latch onto a social cause so you can absurdly regulate and tax businesses
>misallocate or out right steal taxpayer money
>Drive away businesses
>watch your citizens lose their jobs and leave if they can
>Promise social programs for the citizens unable to leave
>Tax and over regulate anything that has or makes money with the promise to give the tax dollars to those unable or unwilling to earn money
>steal most of your fresh tax harvest, misallocate a bunch to your buddies who promise to "bring back da jobz " and give the bare minimum to the knuckledragging poor so they stay lazy and dependant
>Regulate everything you can so you can to increase govt control and collect fines as covert taxation
>Repeat anywhere the proles are being economically productive.
