Except .45 is bigger than it needs to be for no apparent reason other than mental penile compensation of fudds, and .458 is the same exact thing except in the AR world (a big slow bullet with low magazine capacity.)

.308 is like the .357 mag of rifles. When an AR guy is like, "eh that's nice but I want something more POWERFUL," he grabs a .308, even though there are other options that are more powerful still. The same goes with a guy who has a handgun and he's like "yeah, I like this 10mm, but it needs more POWER. Fuck capacity."

There is a gun show coming to Houston in 3 weeks and I've been saving to buy an AR-15.

I read on /k/ that AR-15's are like computers in that you can build your own and save money that way.

Should I build my own rifle, or just buy one for my first rifle? I'd like an SSAR-15 stock and rails to mount a flashlight + foregrip. Pic related are the specials going on at my local gun store.

I still recommend building though, that's what I did. The satisfaction of a properly functioning home build is a feeling few know.

That 16" on the bottom is looking not too much shorter than your 20". Maybe I should go with a 20". Literally have bought everything but the buffer tube kit/stock/barrel because I can't decide on the barrel length.

Do you have a fav, having fired all three? I keep telling myself that I'll be able to shoot in competitions if I get a 20, but I know that I don't have the time/motivation to do so.

20" just looks so aesthetic. But If I built one I would have to dedicate the lower to it due to the longer buffer tube...
>>
>>30616155
Shorter gas systems work with a rifle length buffer, I've shot my 20" upper on the carbine lower, and it works the other way around too.
Lots of 3gun people run carbine buffer + mid or rifle gas on an 18" barrel.
Part of the 16" looking almost as long as the 20" is the muzzle devices, the 20 extends about 1" past the muzzle, and on the 16" it extends about 2" past. Some of it is also the angle

Have you considered 18" with rifle gas?
I occasionally consider switching my 20" to that.
>>
>>30616155
You can find 18" barrels with mid length gas on them if you want a happy medium between the two and make it so that lower doesn't have to be dedicated for rifle length gas

Post your AR or forever hold your saltiness.

If a carbine spring and buffer can stand up to the violence of a carbine gas system on a 16" barrel, there is literally no reason why it wouldn't easily stand up to the relatively light forces placed on it by a 20" rifle length gas upper.

TL:DR you are simply retarded and/or a 10yo up past your bedtime.
>>
>>30616218
I haven't looked into the 18" as much but they do look interesting. I saw a 17.7" on Ballistic Advantage that looked very appealing but 18" might be a more standard and tried-and-true profile.

I have read that the 20" recoil is very low. Does it get so much stronger in the 16" that it would decrease one's enjoyment in firing the gun?

At this point I'm trying to just imagine which one I will be happiest with and not have all the "what ifs" for. Maybe the solution really is to build lots of uppers haha.

Thanks for the info on the buffers being interchangeable; didn't know that!

On buffers-
You can't put a rifle buffer in a carbine tube or the other way around, but most uppers should work on most lowers, you can see the people arguing about it. :p
20" recoil is barely recoil, it feels like a gentle push against your shoulder.
16" recoil is like a more abrupt push, but still nothing bad.

Building more uppers is always fun, just be careful though, having uppers without lowers might prompt you to build more lowers.

Whats a good cheap 2 point sling for a rifle length ar with a fixed stock? Looking for something on the sides, not on the bottom
>>
>>30616391
You're missing the point, while maybe your AR hasn't had any issues with short stroking, pairing a rifle length gas system with a carbine buffer is known to cause short stroking because of the lower pressure.
Now as anon said >>30616155 he's looking for something that he'd be able to have easily change uppers without any potential issues. And you can find midlengh gas on just about any barrel length available. So an 18" with a midlengh gas system would be a good way to go.
Anon can get anywhere from 14" to 18" barrels very easily with a midlengh gas system, and if he does get a rifle length gas system on a 20" barrel he'll have less of s chance of short stroking it than if he had a carbine buffer
>>
>>30616526
Hi
>>
>>30616526
>he'll have less of s chance of short stroking it than if he had a carbine buffer

I'm the anon who posted about the versatile lower. When pairing a mid-length gas system with a rifle buffer, is it possible to get the opposite problem of short stroking? Pushing the buffer/spring back too hard or causing it to push back too quickly?

I've watched a lot of Youtube videos on the topic of gas and buffers but haven't really figured it out.
>>
>>30616526
Except, I have 16" carbine, 16" midlength, 18" rifle length and 20" rifle length uppers, and they like to have orgies with my lowers, which are almost all carbine lowers sporting different buffer weights. Over the course of going on 2 years this has not caused any short stroking issues, even with shit ammo. I have no idea what you are on about.

Three questions:

- Why aren't owls legal to hunt?
- Is .223 acceptable for taking down large birds, assuming it's just sitting low on a tree and you are in an unpopulated area with plenty of woodland behind where you're shooting?
- What do you suppose owls taste like?

"What is it like to fire an AR-15? It’s horrifying, menacing and very very loud.

It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon.

But mostly, I was just terrified.

Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).

The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable."

irons are unecessarily large, prism is dum, most people like the SSA-E vs the SSA, pb prefers the MBT, I personally wouldnt get a 14.5 upper - muzzle device will be pinned and welded, makes it harder to swap muzzle devices, rails, etc.

Thanks! My rail decision has been made. Gonna go with the Lite. I don't know why, I just can't really get into Keymod or M-Lok. I've tried. I really have. I like rails, but I'm going to go with something longer and lighter than the LaRue quads I have now.

good choice as long as you only use a lo-pro gas block.
>>

The only true benefit I've been able to find for mlok over keymod is mlok lets you do half placements.
So you have more fine adjustment.
Then again, keymod's slots are about half as long as mlok so you have roughly the same amount of adjustment.

Mlok has more aesthetic grip panels.
I'd look at accessories and figure out what you think you want to use, and get the system that matches what the most accessories you want come in.

I'm assuming my BCM lo-pro should fit.

But I may have to buy a new BCM gas block if I end up going with the BFH Lightweight barrel instead. I've got a leftover .750 gas block left over from my first build that I started before I decided to go FSP.

Citation fucking needed.

NSR panels don't come in OD :^)
>>

as long as it's lo-pro and not an adjustable gas block
>>

Are you buying it?

>implying keymod or mlok rails need rail panels at all

>implying shelving looks better than the way of the future mlok

Try and haggle them, hey have had the lowers for a while
>>
Torn between the BCM BFH standard weight or the BFH lightweight barrels. Is a difference of 5oz worth enough to go to a thinner profile barrel?
>>
>>30618680
should i try lower than $750 shipped?
i've never haggled and am not sure how low to go.
