It's really because it was the first standardized attempt at camouflaging infantry rifles. It actually was tremendously successful at the time. That baby shit and blue green coloration did a much better job at concealing forces than black did. 400 years later US infantry learned from this.

I just wish the people who did them would put a little more effort into it. There are some impressive camo paint jobs out there, but it seems like most the Rhodie ones are done poorly. They either have a shit pattern with too much yellow, cover it in fucking globs of paint, or just don't get the right colors, defeating the purpose of camouflaging it in the first place.
