Sup /k/, Ausfag here.

We legally have to keep our guns in a safe with the ammo in a separate box, and I'd like to follow that law.
Problem is, in a home invasion it could take quite a while to get to my safe and take out a loaded gun.

So I'd like something that I can keep closer to myself that I could use if I didn't get the chance to make it to my safe.
What's a good melee weapon that I can keep in a nightstand or beside my desk that could give me some peace of mind in case I can't get to my safe?

I'm thinking a large knife like a kukri, bowie knife or machete, but I don't know what would be a good choice.
I have a sword permit, but you're technically supposed to keep them locked up (even though nobody does) and I don't want anything that can bite me in the ass in court.

So what's a good melee weapon for home defense?
>>
cricket bat
>>
Blades are really bad defense weapons.
Baseball or kricket bat

Defending yourself will land you in court. You're better off lubing up and bending over. Either way, someone will fuck you in the ass
>>
>>30605407
Can you into crossbow? I'd get one of those as well as an aluminum baseball bat if your house is open, or a large knife if your house is full of especially close quarters

Also
>needing a permit for a sword
Thank god they're keeping those sword murders down

I should mention that I've done a fair bit of sparring with swords, and just from swinging bats around they honestly feel like some of the worst weapons possible.

>>30605440
Oh yeah, obviously I'll end up in court. The question is whether or not I'll win.

>>30605444
Nah, crossbows are way harder to get than guns. We can get compound bows with no questions asked, though.

At some point your local ice addict meets your 6cell maglite, 'after he attacked you' and you defended yourself from his crazed madness by smashing his fucking brains all over the floor.

Dude im with you,as a fellow ausfag and gun owner (longarms) i see no reason not to have a shotgun loaded by the bed, but check out that chef in sydney who just got released on parol awaiting his murder trial for killing the home intruder with his bare hands after he broke into his home he shares with his wife and 2 month old girl... if he had a gun the greenies wouldve hung him via hippie lynch mob... id love some american style freedom to defend your family down here

>I should mention that I've done a fair bit of sparring with swords, and just from swinging bats around they honestly feel like some of the worst weapons possible.
Honestly i would say it doesn't matter unless you have some type of big open floor space. If someone is attacking you and you try to stop them with a blade, it's probably not going to work unless they bleed EVERYWHERE, keep in mind that's your house and you have to clean it up. It's going to take time for them to bleed out and they can keep doing dangerous stuff. If they don't die and you want to try and maybe save them until an ambulance can show up hacking and stabbing them a lot is going to be pretty difficult to staunch bleeding.

Something like a bat has good reach, it's a stick so you can poke them and see if they're playing possum. If you get a solid hit they're probably not going to be moving that spot around too much.

Personally I use >>30605488 a foot long one of those most of the time.
>>
>>30605502
Problem is that at least in the videos I've seen online, baseball bats don't tend to take someone down in one hit unless you're really lucky.

It's going to be easier to stab someone a few times with a bowie or hit them with a tomahawk than it will be to get a few big swings off.
I'd also be completely fucked in a hallway or pretty much anything except a really big room.

>id love some american style freedom to defend your family down here

No shit :/
A lot of this lately is the cops being cockholes about the whole self defence thing- sure they do need to investigate a death on someone's property to make sure its a legit case of reasonable force, but hitting people up with murder charges is just plain silly.
Sure if it turns out the dead-un was killed by someone over a debt, drugs, drinking etc- then up it to murder.

Depends what the intent is
You want to kill someone- blades and spikes
You want someone in screaming agony- bats

Essentially blunt objects are good for disabling people and there's only a couple of areas where you'll get an 'instant kill' with a big hit- head and neck. Even then you're having to throw a fairly large amount of force into popping a skull or smashing vertebra. Anywhere else and you're looking at a disabling strike- which may not work if they're on meth/ice.

Blades and spikes kill people really easily, there's lots of areas which can be reached by 4-5" of penetration (fnar!) and will result in either instant or rapid death- plus you don't really have to use a lot of force unless you're punching through a sternum or skull. As always, the influence of drugs shouldn't be underestimated and they might not even notice lungs filling up with blood or why they can't walk properly.

I'd go with a tomahawk before a bowie. I'm not from Aus but if some junkie broke into my place and bled out all over I'd consider it a pretty big biohazard like who knows what they might have

If you don't like baseball bats I picked up one of these

just don't like to leave it out and keep the maglite around since the thing tended to scare the lady company. Light comes in handy too at night.

Haha good on ya.
Few years ago I was contracted to work at this place and popped back in to pick up a computer and some notes. Having a chat to some of the guys who worked there and suddenly a sewer grate goes flying through a window, two shitbags run in and grab a monitor and I go charging after them.
Got one with the monitor, knocked him the fuck out

Next day I've got police and HR telling me I'm a fucking terrible person for chasing burglers, you could have been stabbed, they might have had a rubber dick or something blah blah blah.
>deep breath
I've done 2 tours of East Timor, 3 tours of Afghan and 2 tours of Iraq. I've been shot once, blown up twice by RPG's, once by a grenade and stabbed by someone with a shovel- do you REALLY fucking think someone half my size armed with a pocket knife and poor hygiene is going to stop me?
>awkward silence

Sounds like someone is from Victoria- if Australia has a capital of communism its Victoria, which is essentially a leftist police state that no one seems to have gotten around to arresting on its human rights abuses.
Rest of the country is kind of the same on its melee weaponry laws and doesn't have permits for them.

There are some exceptions though.
With the Ninja massacres of the mid-late 1980s stuff like throwing stars nunchaku have been banned, over 400,000 people* where killed by ninja stars, nunchaku and dingos during this dark time in our history, there was also the early 80s rap-battles and breakdance craze which killed many suburban youfs with flick knives after they got served hard in shopping malls and backstreets. The casualties of flick knives are essentially incalculable* at this point due to no one being able to figure out which body parts belonged to whom.
Butterfly knives, flamethrowers, crossbows, push daggers, trench knives, metal whips, rocket launchers, maces, tonfas and laser guns- are also banned due to the mental casualties** inflicted on a whole generation of politicians brought up on quality media representations of martial conflict during the whole 80s and 1990s.

>*may or may not be true
>**definitely true

Weirdly, while if I roam the streets with a flail or war hammer, looking for justice and punishing evil doers - I may be arrested
However, if I do the same with my dane axe or rapier... technically I'm not actually breaking any laws, but if I used them to injure someone, I'd probably be charged with an offensive weapon. Offensive weapons range from cardboard tubes to field catapults- because essentially the police don't know what the fuck they're supposed to do with the laws and just make shit up as they go.
Making shit up, 'cause that's how we roll down here!

>>30608052
Not him, but hey lets leave the combat veteran to make his own decisions. Lets face it, hes far more qualified.
>>
>>30609652

Combat veteran is a very broad term that people use far too often. While he could have been a groundpounder kicking down doors, he could also have been a base guard watching TCNs.

>All this shit about sword permits
Trust me, it's worse than you think.

I know people who were trying to bring a ceremonial sword from Tasmania to New South Wales for an event, and just to bring it through Victoria they were apparently supposed to keep it in a locked box attached to their car with the hilt separated from the blade.
A blunt ceremonial sword which would be about as lethal as a butter knife.

Americans, please don't let your country become like ours.
>>
>>30605407
>large knife like a kukri, bowie knife or machete

All good choices. Quality of knife would be far more important than type, but, considering you're going home defence, I'd give a slight edge to the kukri. The blade profile means that, for the short length you'd want inside a typical house, it will maximise the damage dealt.

Plus they're by far the most aesthetic choice IMO. This is also an advantage, as tourists often buy them. Machetes are far more work/gang combat related in the eyes of the law. If you can find a legitimate touristy reason to purchase a battle ready kukri, you may be as legally safe as possible.

Alternatively, consider a chinese style cooking cleaver or a huge ass chefs knife. They'll do the job.

I have a sword, it's the last thing I wanna pick to defend myself, I'd rather use a .22lr.

>people been using swords for thousands of years
Yeah you're right, lots of mass graves full of them.

I would want a short spear, like 8-10 inch blade on a 3-3.5ft blade. Tight enough to manuever in small space, but ling enough to not get it turned on you. Also stabbing is way better than slashing, every dame time.
