what's the best barrel length for a FAL?
>>
>>30604290
18"
>>
>>30604290
.5"
>>
>>30604295
this is what i was leaning towards... was just wondering if the 21" is ideal or not

is the 16 inch one pretty bad?
>>
>>30604317
>16 inch one pretty bad

16 inch is pretty much manlet levels, and being a sideshow if the flash don't blind you.
>>
>>30604290

.308 can go down to 17" without any diminishing returns RE velocity.

I would suppress it though to cut the muzzle flash.

18" is probably best, but those 16" DSA Para's are sexy as fuck.
>>
>>30604444
quads confirms sexiness
>>
>>30604434
the muzzle flash/concussion seems like the biggest problem with the shorter barrels, not sure how much benefit a couple inches in extra mobility is worth the extra flash
>>
21"
>>
>>30604730
why better than 18? how much FPS will those extra 3 inches give
>>
I have to 18" version, and I think it's a really good looking length.
>>
21" if full stock, 21" or 18" if para.
>>
>>30604748
how obnoxious is the concussion compared to the 20?" M1A? is the 18" FAL a flamethrower like a mosin carbine?
>>
>>30604769
Not as bad as some AR muzzle brakes I've stood next to.
It's actually reasonable, the m1a is not bad at all.
>>
>>30604748
also is that a DSA? how do you like it? reliability good so far?
>>
>>30604317
16" is probably the best length for most uses, and looks very good.
>>
>>30604779
Yes it's a DSA.
Its very nice and once I adjusted the gas system its been reliable.
>>
>>30604299
This, just turn your FAL into a flamethrower.
>>
>>30604789
could you elaborate on that a bit? im assuming you had to dial it in to work with a particular load? what ammo does it work well with/fail with?

im thinking i might just get the 18" version because ive heard the 16" can sometimes be trickier with reliability

The only stuff I've shot is Privi .308 fmj
I just found which setting on the gas knob that cycled the action then turned it up another 2 clicks.
Its not hard to setup.
>>
>>30604819
thanks. also one more question...do you know if those DSA 18" barrels come with the brake welded on? how hard is it to change out brakes/flashhider on the stock one?

also whats your avg accuracy with privi 308?
>>
>>30604821
From what I know they're silver soldered on, I don't want to change the device so I don't care. It'll take a torch to get it off.

>>30604828
I'm not a great shot, but I could reliably zero my rifle using it. I could group on a 3 inch stick up target at 100 yards.

Not a whole lot, flash and blast is the best reason to choose a longer barrel, and why a 16 inch 308 is a shit idea.

SpearFAL is original and, imo, the classic look for the FAL. It doesn't look quite as good in any other length, and regardless of what other people will say it isn't unwieldy at all (this is coming from a 5'11" manlet). Added bonus is that you can shitpost and feel superior about your extra 70fps or whatever paltry velocity gains are.

That being said, from a practical standpoint (e.g. you wanna think you're an operator doing operator things operationally) the 18in Para model is probably the most versatile.

Not posting best version
>>
There is no ideal 308 length
Its a constant velocity increase
21 has the best velocity tho
>>
>>30604748
18" Full stock is the best looking version. Second best is 21"
>>
I don't know many brands outside the AR world and I'm wanting to get an FAL.

What's a good brand and price point? I don't want to spend a shitload for the highest end rifle, I just want a serviceable, reliable rifle.

5.56 has been fun and still is, I'm just wanting to enjoy .308 and possibly give it a Rhodesian paint job.
>>
>>30604801
You find out what setting locks the bolt open every time for whatever ammo you're using, then add 2 more
I just remember my settings for each type of ammo
>>
>>30604746
Something like 200 fps
>>
>>30604828
Goddamn, the simplicity and smoothness of that grip is making my dick do a little dance.
>>
>>30606609
DSA or build
>>
>>30606625
Disregard this
I was thinking something different
Its 100 fps from 16-21 according to one chart I saw on google

Put your socks on bucko, because I'm giving you the down low.

FOR THE MECHANICALLY UNGIFTED:
You have very few options for a ready made FAL! The only factories on Earth still producing FALs for the civilian market are located in Illinois and belong to DSArms, who produce their rifles entirely here in the USA.

Kinda neat, right?

The downside to DSA rifles is the 1:10 twist rate (really not that big of a deal) as opposed to the NATO spec 1:12, and their price (if you are a poorfag), since their fully-decked models hover right around $1.5K.

In addition to DSA, there are a few other companies on the US that at one point in time made FALs, typically from parts kits, that are still floating around on the used market. They are Enterprise (avoid), Century (avoid), and IAI (M444, decent). These can be pretty hit or miss, but the upside is that you get military parts in your raifu. Now that's real fuckin' NeATO.

FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIKE A CHALLENGE:
Build one, dammit.

Thanks bro. I'm done building ARs for awhile, and am looking for a bit of a challenge for my next build.
>>
>>30606795
Thanks, buddy.

I really want to buy the tooling the build AKs and FALs, but that has to wait until I move and have a better job.

As for now, I may go back to owning a PTR-91 for my .308 fix. Great gun, but I've always wanted a FAL. Adjustable gas block gives me more ammo options.

I would really love an AR-10 based rifle, but no standardization of parts and the fact the money I have to spend on a mediocre rifle could get me a high-end AR means they're a no-go for me.
>>
>>30607139
The tools needed for an FAL pretty much just boil down to a good set of screwdrivers, a comprehensive set of bits, punches of varying sizes, some good hammers that won't fuck up the steel of the rifle, and a nice vise. The majority of the stuff used is stuff that's already in a lot of people's garages, the only specific tools to the FAL are locking shoulder gauges and the action wrench. That's the beauty of it as opposed to an AK/G3 build; no folding and no welding and no riveting! It's harder than an AR certainly, but not by much, and it's far more rewarding.
>>
>>30604290
21" master race

also considering that most variants used 21" and that is the length it was designed for, if you want the kinetic energy and accuracy that makes the FAL the FAL, why settle for anything less?
>>
>>30606795
lol what base are you using swfag?

ASE? DTM? fuckin' A-100 lmao

>>
>>30607190
Yeah, I'm going to build an FAL first.

However, I'm waiting until I have all the things needed to do AKs and G3s because I just want to set up a work station dedicated to building guns of various types.

Which is why I'm waiting to move, my current living situation doesn't facilitate this and I want this to be my main hobby.
>>
>>30607338
Wasnt the FAL designed with a different caliber in mind?

They're pretty damn good. 1:12 twist, 21in, chrome to the dome, and pretty close to 2MOA according to FALfiles. Can't ask for much more.
>>
>>30608162
It was designed for 7.92 Kurz, same round at the STG-44.

But they had to switch to 7.62 NATO because NATO.

Dear /brg/,
I am a poor college student with a rifle/ammo budget of USD 600. Are my hopes of getting a battle rifle a pipe dream or is there a /brg/ option for poor anons?

7.62/308 isnt going to be good for your wallet, and you wont be shooting the gun as much due to cost per round.

It was designed around 21", 18"s also work well though.

just build an AR15, you can build one for under $600 easy. or save up some more, because like another poster pointed out, 308 ammo is gonna be unaffordable to you
actually this >>30609464
is a good option
