Mosin is probably the best entry-level one there is (SVD is in the upper-end because of fanboy popularity). SKS is a good in-between and the AK remains a decent lower to mid-range semi in the US.

When I was college I absolutely loved it's design, action, and ergonomics despite never owning or firing one for myself.
I now have the chance to buy one from a friend's dad for 1.6k but I'm having a tough time deciding now...

Not OP but it's a plastic housing which attaches to the receiver, there's a pic rail underneath with the actual optic mounted on it.

I've seen six or seven of them floating around the Ft Knox area, I'm not a collector and honestly want something to shoot, from what I've read they all seems to float around 2 MOA on a good day, and 3-4 on a bad day. I could build a nice ar-15 or bolt gun for the kinda cash I'd spend on it.
