Black formulation was brittle at the time, they settled with plum, 1988 is when true black mags came to be that aren't brittle.
I'm not sure how much it counts as weird, but for a while during the pistol's use in the US military 1911 magazines were partially blued so that the upper half of the magazine could hold a stronger temper.
