I want to get my first battle rifle. Lets discuss. .308 is a commonly available cartridge. Would getting something in 7.62x54r be a mistake? The ammo seams cheap but not many modern firearms are chambered in 7.62x54r. So a .308 must be the ideal choice especially since its my first rifle.
>>
It seams like my most modern options are the m1a or basically an FAL variant.
>>
54r is cheeeeap compared to 308. Even if you buy a box at a time like a huge fag most serious big box stores will carry it. There's a solid two square yards of shelf space devoted to nuggetfood at Sportsman's Warehouse near me.

It would be cool if they made something similar to this in .308.

So I would be wrong to think 54R would be limiting myself to a niche cartridge? Cause 54R looks sexy.

You see I'm a single cartridge guy. I have 3 pistols in 9mm, so I only need to stock 1 caliber. As well as being very familiar and very comfortable with 9mm. I'd like to do the same and only have one or two rifles in the same cartridge.

Are there any modern rifles in 54r? What couple rifles could I get for fun and SHTF storage?

Does any modern military still chamber 54r in service rifles?

I'm not sure if I'm looking for an excuse to get a rifle in 54r because SVDs simply look cool.
>>

>Does any modern military still chamber 54r in service rifles?
Supposedly Ukraine uses Veprs for their service rifles.

kek, not very reassuring.

Might be leaning towards a m1a
>>
>>30585948
VEPR... that's about it.
Zastava might introduce an M78? basically an M77 in x45r and the M77 is breddy good.

.308 is far more versatile and ammunition is running around 45-50cpr if you are a smart shopper.
>>30585862
>M14 or FAL most modern
Not really. AR-10 is a more modern design. Capable of very good accuracy and can be built very cheap, reliability and parts availability however vary greatly. There are different kinds of AR-10s and that don't share parts, but like 80%+ are mostly DPMS pattern.

FAL is good.
M14 is great, I love them personally.
G3 is very cheap and can be mechanically accurate, but IMO the ergonomics make them awkward to use and because of that getting good accuracy out of them is tricky.
Then there's the Zastava M77, basically a ~600$ .308 AK that can take modified 14 mags.

hmm. Thanks for the info anon. I think I'm just attracted to the look of the classic SVD but I need to commit to a rifle and cartridge based off of more than looks.

You can get SVD-lookalike furniture kits for the Vepr. Attach one to a Vepr chambered in .308 and you're good to go.

why do you give a shit what a modern military uses

don't recall .308 being all that popular in 'modern' military arsenals either
>>
>>30585922

A good rule of thumb is to go with anything that was a standard military cartridge used by either NATO or the Warsaw Pact, both 54r and .308 fit that criteria.

I just feel a military used or NATO used cartridge will have more rifles, more manufacturers, and more availability in the long run.

And I didn't know 54R was used by NATO, The fuck they use it in?
>>
>>30585996

The Ukranian vepr is a completely different design and rifle than the russian vepr...they only share the name.

I own a vepr in 308. I like it, but there are drawbacks. It dents brass like the g3 and AKs do, and its not as accurate as a scar-17. On the plus side the vepr is cheap...mine was a chainsaw art flatback that cost 599 OTD. I took off the unfinished wood buttstock and put an ar style stock adaptor and aluminum handguard along with the old pre-zhukov magpul ak hardguard. I really like my rifle for what it is: a sub 800 dollar 20 round 308 shooter. I'll see if I have any pics.

>>30586169
Thats what unnerves me and makes me want to make one in .308 and commit to .308 rifles.

>>30586168
Thats what I kind of like I can make my SVD lookalike .308 and still have other rifles that all are in the same caliber. I am a minimulist when it comes to firearms. The 3 pistols I have each have 5+ mags, owb serpa holster, iwb leather holster for my smallest one, and I can collect 9mm up the ass and have all my pistols covered ammo wise. I want to do the same thing with rifles. Have a .308 rifle with a long range optic and bipod, and have another .308 with a closer range optic. Does this kinda make sense?
>>
>>30586211
very much so. I reccomend the bolt action 308 as the long range...or if you're really crazy, an ar10 that accepts .308 pmags and a mossberg mvp in 308 as well. That way both rifles take the same round and the same magazine.
>>
>>30586290
Thatd be fuckn sweet. Yeah a bolt action 308 would be cheap too. Not counting glass of course.

>7.62x54r be a mistake?
Five years ago? No. Now? Yes
54r is already in 308 territory for cost and it's only going to get worse. The days of cheap surplus are over.
>>
>>30585862
>Would getting something in 7.62x54r be a mistake?

Yes. because 54r, just by commercial performance is absolutely shit compared to the .308 and it costs pretty much the same as .30-06 territory. At this point you would have to hand load or pray for a Red Dawn to get what is even considered "good" performance ammunition.
>>
>>30586483

Russian Vepr.
>>
>>30586156

54r wasn't used by NATO unless you count fucking Bulgaria or something, but it was the standard full sized cartridge for the Warsaw Pact, and is still used by Russia, China, and many others, meaning it will be widely available. Honestly you could always get both, get an M1A or FAL and then later pick up an SVD or SVT, that's my policy.
>>
People that say 54r is expensive now are fucking stupid and lazy
>>
>>30587390
Yeah I just ignored it I see it going for less than 40c/round.

>>30587357
I don't rly count them. Russia/America are what I personally consider when I examine if something is a legit cartridge. I do like the .308 idea though, for an SVD bastard mod thing with a Vepr. I don't have any attraction to the 54R other than the look of the SVD, however it does seam like 54r is pretty cheap, could shoot more for cheaper. I don't know if there are ranges near me though. Most are .308 or below.
>>
>>30587421

I'm planning on picking up an M1A and an SVT, stocking up on 54r because it's cheap, and then keeping the M1A around in a SHTF scenario since it uses a round that's so common around here.

kek, I should just modernize a Mosin Nagant and get a Vepr or SVD or whatever. I'd have one bolt and one semi rifle in 54R. Done. Easy.
