They do some neat things with firearms, mainly the differences between ammo and the whole craft your own stuff, but they commit the vidya sin of not making bullets as deadly as they really should be (easy mode makes you more immune to bullets, hard mode makes the enemies more immune to bullets)
But if I had to rate it on a /k/ scale I'd rate it an 8 to a 9 depending on the competition

I didn't play all the fallouts, but New Vegas is definitely more /k/ than Fallout 3.
When looking at the weapons in the game, you see they were made by people who know their shit. Not perfect of course, but as a whole it definitely feels solid.

Let’s just say this point is “arguable” since not everyone agrees, but anyway, in F:NV, it didn’t make sense to add a round with similar game properties to 10mm. That’s why .45 Auto is tuned to Legends of the M1911-levels (http://www.sightm1911.com/1911-Myth.htm) in F:NV and is considered a higher “tier” than 10mm. The general progression is 9mm, 10mm, .45 Auto, then 12.7mm.

Weapons of the New Millenia and Heffy's Ar15 and AK47 pack. They add a shitton of new guns to the game, great looking models.
Spice of Life. Adds a ton of clothing options to make the world feel more varied and alive.
Various other weapons and armor mods at your discretion.
Familiar tier
Animation replacement mods, graphical upgrade mods as they fit with your machine.
CaliberX, to add all the correct ammunition to the game. IE an AK 47 will actually use 7.62x39 rather than just 5.56.
Experienced tier
Manually replacing weapon animations. Heffy's anims are acceptable for AR and AK weapons, but I prefer others.
Manually replacing textures for certain items.
And above all else...
Tale of Two Wastelands.
It may seem daunting from here, but it is so worth it.

Even in game, the low capacity of the .45 pistol makes it shitty. I tried using on a golden gecko and it really didn't work so well. I went straight back to using a 9mm SMG as my run-and-gun weapon.

I strongly advise getting the 'true concealment' mod, it makes the turn timer not start until you break stealth, which honestly seems like how it was supposed to be.
Game has a lot of great new ideas in it but some of them don't quite mesh properly with each other, like there were different teams who weren't talking to each other properly.
Hell of a lot of fun though, and the modding community is really going strong, tons of weapons and armor sets have been added. If you're a Halo fan, rejoyce, every armor from Reach is able to be modded in, and 4 and 5 are on the way, along with ODST and Marine gear, full weapon compliments and so on.
