ITT: Reloading

What are some good websites for purchasing components?

I'm new to reloading, just got my first press a few months ago.

Any recommendations?
Favorite loads?

Try
Grafs and Sons, they charge a flat $7.95 to process your order. Also Try Brunos shooters supply. Many places out there to buy bullets from. With the elections coming up make sure you have enough on hand. The may get scarce if SHTF

What's a good recipe for .223 for stockpiling? I'm looking for the equivalent of m193, cheap, accurate, effective...
>>
>>30570822
OP here, I'm new to reloads, but I believe that most reloads/handloads will be significantly more accurate than M193.

That being said, you should also maintain consistency: same powder, same bullet, same load.

I recommend experimenting with a load until you find what you like (velocity, recoil, powder type, ect.) then make a shitload of them.
And seal with oxygen absorbents/desiccant packs.

Midway
Natchez
Wideners
Amazon
>>
>>30570977
What bullet is recommended that's both cheap and fairly decent performance in bodies?
>>
powder valley
grafs
gamaliel
midsouth shooter supply
occasionally cabela
Small bullet companies like oregon bullets or bayou bullets

also very occasionally midwayusa and brownells.

Federal American Eagle XM193 55gr FMJ in prepackaged 420rd tins.

gunbot has reloading supplies, will most likely point you to Natchez. try and buy the powder and primers locally to avoid hazmat bullshit, everything else, get online.

Evergladesammo.com has good bullets and brass, good price- not great, but nothing too pricey- and fast shipping. Usually get my packages 3 days before estimated shipping.

Depends on the desired effect.

Look up some ballistic gel tests on youtube. I'm sure some polymer tip hollow points or high velocity FMJs would be good/accurate.

Pic related, it's what 55gr. FMJs do on impact, depending on velocity.

I wanted to avoid the annoying shipping fees, so I would only need to buy brass, bullets, other supplies, ect.

I only load the .50 african eliminator, but after recent events i may need more.

Who sells the cheapest corn cob tumbling media?

Is the cost of reloading 12ga shells worth it? Initial investment for me would be $0 since I'm being given a decent press, so only asking from a materials cost point of view.

Would be loading #7 shot, for sporting clays.

Also can I use the same setup to reload slugs and buckshot if I decided to just for shits and giggles?
>>
>>30571095
I'm trying to load my own here
>>
>>30571419
Lead shot is fucking expensive nowadays. Unless you can find reclaimed shot for practically free, or invest in a shot dripper, 12ga is only worth loading for buck or slugs.

I might as well get into reloading since it seems like gun/ammo prices may *possibly* go to complete shit with everything going on in the next few years.

What about steel? Most places these days seem to have banned lead shot anyway.

Also the high-velocity stuff I like is steel and I think has to be because it's lighter, but I also don't know fuck all about shell loads so that could be me talking out of my ass.

Never thought about dripping my own shot. Seems like it would be pretty easy though, considering it's based on 200+ yr old tech.
>>
>>30571097
Haven't had any problems with them.

Also Buffalo Arms Company if you should milsurp calibers like 8mm Lebel.
>>
>>30571588
Only ever use lead shot unless you have no other choice (like duck hunting). firing steel shot in an older shotgun not designed for it can rip a fixed choke right off the end of the barrel. This is because steel doesn't compress like lead. Also steel shot sheds velocity super quick due to the fact that it's only 71% as dense as lead.

>can rip a fixed choke right off the end of the barrel
You mean blow the end of the barrel out? Or did you mean blow a choke tube off?

I have an 1100 with an imp cyl barrel, and haven't had any problems, but I'd like to know if it's something I should be worried about.

>steel shot sheds velocity super quick due to the fact that it's only 71% as dense as lead.
That makes sense, less mass means less inertia. Does it make a difference at sporting clay distances though? I'm genuinely asking, I don't know.
>>
>>30571126

Natchez has great prices on some stuff, but they're probably overloaded with orders right now, I ordered a new press, shellplate and a die set, the order went completely unnoticed for three days, didn't even get confirmed (they wouldn't e-mail me shipping options even after I called in to ask). Got tired of it and just ordered the set off eBay so I can get it set up while I'm still at home.

...or maybe they're fine and just don't give a shit about international orders, regardless of what their FAQ says.
>>
>>30572327
So what did you do with that jug of loose powder? Also you never answered where the fuck the guy found a jerrycan full of rifle powder.
>>
>>30573656

I put it in the PEHD containers and keep it in the dark. It'll be turned into .223 soon enough anyway.
As for how did he find it, like I said, he's a retailer and generally works with powder on a pretty big scale. I got it at 2/3 of the usual retail price.
>>
>>30573716
Lucky bastard. the only insider connection I know is a bagel shop guy that gives me bags of day old bagels because I cut him a deal on a shotgun once.
>>
>>30572194
Improved cylinder is fine. He means Damascus barrels with full chokes.
>>
>>30572194
>Does it make a difference at sporting clay distances though
In my experience not really, provided you get a solid hit. Doesn't pattern as well from my guns and my range allows lead so I don't really use them.
>>
>>30570822
What do you guys think of the Hornady Soft Point 60 grain as an all purpose hunting, defense, target round? Out of 1:9 16"?
>>
What kinda of set up for reloading should a /k/unt invest $2000 with? I've got money to burn starting in December.
>>
>>30575797
Progressive press if you want to go balls deep and start your own bulletfarm. Multiple options to automate it too.
>>
>>30575811
What's the minimum set to have and what're a few 'nice' additions?
>>
>>30575933
>press
>spare plates in whatever caliber you reload in (dies are way too much work to change over but if you marathon calibers it's not 100% necessary)
>Bullet and case collator
Technically everything but the press and shellplate/dies are 'nice additions' but you may as well get a turret press and spend the difference on components if you are going to be feeding one by one.
>>
>>30575811
>Multiple options to automate it too.
Within a 2 grand budget?
>>
>>30576001
Any companies to avoid or go for?
>>
>>30576348
With the press? Hell no.

>>30576372
Lee makes the relatively lowest quality press though any from the Big Three of Lee, Hornady and Dillon but they are all decently solid Hornady has the most features for the money though Dillon has the best reputation, warranty and customer service for a decent bit more. If you go for the Dillon get the 1050 because it is a one time investment.
>>
>>30576911
What makes Lee the bottom barrel for presses? Kinda makes me rethink this gun show shill I met.
>>
>>30577304
It's not the bottom of the barrel as in they are absolute garbage, their presses are fine, just not as well finished as the more expensive brands in regards to progressive presses and to an extent dies but they are a good value.

A Dillon isn't exactly three or four times better, just better at three or four times the price.
>>
>>30577402
I see. I was looking into Lee presses because of the price and a progressive is where I intended on starting.
>>
>>30577427
If you are planning on starting with a progressive I would recommend the Hornady with maybe some conversion plates for Lee dies, best value in my opinion.
>>
>>30577489
My bad if I'm bombarding you with a million questions but reddit ain't any help with Q&A on newbs. Would you mind explaining your thought process with the Hornady press combined with conversion plates? I've been hearing a lot of bad jive about Hornady.
>>
>>30577529
Their warranty, QC and CS isn't as good as Dillion (which isn't saying much becasue Dillon has the best in the firearms business pretty much) but it has features such as the primer disposal system that you would need to upgrade to the 1050 to get and it's not as if their service is terrible. It doesn't do other things as well as the Dillon but the Lock and Load does a lot of things for cheaper.

Lee just make the cheapest dies and they are good enough.
>>
I ordered a bunch of goodies to start converting my birdshot loads into slugs for cheap range fun
Anyone here do this? Tips for beginners?
>>
What is a good local price to pay for powder and primers? Don't feel like getting raped on hazmat but things tend to be overpriced in the shitty state of Jewsey.
>>
>>30571969
+1 for buffalo arms, have .455 webley for decent prices even though they can gouge the fuck out of it because there's no other option currently.
>>
>>30571294
Windows Phone masterrace?
>>
>>30577427
I started on the Lee turret. I've only used it as a single stage but I like it so far.
>>
>>30577427

Lee progressives (not the turret) are trash. You're guaranteed to spend more time tinkering, adjusting and repairing than actually reloading.
Whereas the turret is a perfectly fine option if you want to load faster than with a single stage, but can't afford / are afraid of actual progressives.
>>
>>30571578
Just check load table data for a caliber that you like, usually you'll see the same powders across the board. I can take a picture of some from my Lyman reloading book if you want.

Reloading dies from Lee also include a sheet with common loads.

Lee Pro1000s are a pretty good deal and mine has reliably crapped out enough ammo to pay for itself 4x over in the last couple years. I do wish it were 4 station so I could add the factory crimp die though. 40 and 9mm use the same shell holder so I just switch over the turrets. They are cheap enough to get separate ones for each pistol caliber you load though.
>>
>>30573743
Sell the bagels at 1/4 price elsewhere where he won't find out. Soon you will make enough to buy a new fun.
>>
>>30584108
>do you know what I hate
>not having multiple healthcode violations and generally not being arrested
>let me change that by making .25 cents a bagel on the side of the highway
>>
>>30570822
The official military load is 25gr of wc844 behind a 55gr bullet.
WC844 is said to be identical to H335 but that is above what most manuals suggested max load.
I suggest you pick a manual and use their data for H335 until you get good accuracy or high pressure signs.
>>
>>30584157
What shithole do you live in that would arrest you for selling bagels to homeless dudes for a quarter
>>
>>30574963
.223 is not an effective hunting round for anything bigger than a coyote

defence you could use literally anything because humans are pussies compared to most animals and barely have the presence of mind to flee after theyve been hit

60 grains is a little light for a precision target round. fine for plinking, but most prefer mid 70s out of a 1:8 20"-24" for anything up to 300. beyond 300 can be a bit of a crapshoot with .223, though it's technically effective up to 800 yards
>>
>>30583332
you must shoot quite a bit 9mm to make reloading worth it...either that or you get really good prices on components?
>>
>>30570434

All the homeless near me already know to dumpster dive near bagel and the pastry shops, there is no market, the only thing the guy giving me bagels is cutting out the dumpster diving side for me.
