Sup lads, I already have my upper and I'm about to place an order for my lower for my first AR. Wanted to get a second opinion on my lower build.

Anderston stripped lower and buffer tube kit
Aero Precision LPK
Strike Industries Ambi Safety (I'm left handed)
Bravo B5 stock

Additionally, should I get a heavier buffer, or should a standard CAR buffer be heavy enough?
>>
>>30563401
Yes it's the rail the military uses on it's M4's. Some day it will be a collectors item.
>>
>>30563401
The RAS is pretty much the best drop in quad, and KAC is a gucci company. It is the issued handguard for the military m4/m4a1.

That being said, its still a non freefloat carbine quadrail in an era of longer freefloat rails. Its also the heaviest of the non airshit tier drop ins.

If you wanna keep it carbine with fixed fsp, keep the RAS on it. Otherwise sell it (its both valuable and in demand) to fund a freefloat.

Hmm i'll have to keep it on there then. Seems like its a nice heavy duty rail. The thing about this gun that concerns me is the fixed angle front sight. It gets in the way of a scope, or optic. Does the barrel need to be swapped out in order to get rid of that? Should I keep or scrap that also. It's not the biggest deal in the world, I can live with it.

Thanks, but I won't be satisfied with it until I can use it to teach my kid half-bro to shoot. Half the reason I am doing this is because I'd like other people in my family to be able to use it if/when needed, instead of lending them something that will kick the shit out of them.

That means in the near future I'll also be putting an RDS or low-power glass on it.

For single stage, SD-E. Its pure sex. For 2 stage, either SSA-E or MBT.
Single stage triggers have a shorter feel and are easier to shoot rapidly as well as being easier to shoot very accurately off a bench, 2 stage triggers allow you to pre stage for precision shooting in a tactical / high pressure situation and provide an extra measure of safety to retards.

I prefer single stage triggers for all forms of shooting.

It gets in the way of the optic because it's a shit optic. If I were you I would keep the upper half exactly like it is but change the vertical grip for a KAC grip and get a sure fire M951. Get an Aimpoint PRO with lower 1/3 mount, a Matech backup sight, change the stock to a SOPMOD, change the grip to standard A2, and you would more or less have an M4 SOPMOD clone.

A lower third cowitness mount (available/standard for all quality dot sights) will allow good sight picture with a fixed fsp. They do not noticeably interfere with magnified optics, you get a very small blurry spot on the lowerst point and thats it.

If you choose to remove the fsp, you can either dremel through the sight tower and create a ghetto low pro gas block, or remove the flash hider and knock out the taper pins on the fsp and slide it off the muzzle. It doesnt require the barrel being removed.

If your flash hider is pinned and welded you're pretty much screwed unless you want to get the flash hider cut off.

Cmmg makes good barrels. They're not super premium but there's no reason to trash it.

Question about shortie ARs. (12.5, 10 inch, etc)

Do these things belch fire like crazy?
How effective are 55gr and 62gr out of these lengths? Seems like the 55gr would fail to fragment at those velocities (2500-2700 FPS, right?).
Does everyone run 75-77gr in these lengths?

Not really interested in a light, Should I be? For the lower 1/3rd mount is that just a mount to make the optic higher? Also not looking to make it a clone of anything really, would I get more badass points if I did try and make it a SOPMOD? Not a fan of the A2 grip either, I have one but the houge is comfy.

>>30563618
Not concerned about seeing a bit of the front sight. One concern I have is if I make the optic higher, then I wont have a place to rest my cheek, right? Or is that not a big deal?

Thanks for all the help
>>
>>30563639
Shorter than 11.5 and velocity drops off rapidly. 10.5 can just barely cross the 2700 fps threshold for fragmentation

>>
>>30563639
M193 will fragment out to 75yds when using an 11.5" barrel. It doesn't reach reliable fragmentation velocity out of 10.5" barrels. 62gr M855 is not very effective out of a 20" never mind 10.5". 77gr MK262 is the preferred round for short barrels, though I use 60-64gr soft points.
>>
>>30563639
>do these things belch fire like crazy?
Depends on the load, but it runs from kinda to fuck yes.
>55/62gr effective?
At HD/MOUT ranges yes, but not much beyond that.
>77gr?
Most effective of the military loads (125-175 yards), still inferior to softpoints and frequently more expensive. Many softpoints will expand enough to be effective down to 1700fps and a few will do so down to 1400.

>>
>>30563670
A lower third cowitness isnt that tall, you still get a decent cheek weld. Absolute with a folding front sight is better, but whether it's enough better to justify the expense of replacing an A2 is a personal decision.
>>
>>30563670
If you plan on using the rifle for any sort of home defense or combat scenarios, a light is a must have. Something like %85 percent of all self defense shootings happen in low light. Lower 1/3rd co-witness just raises the sight a little bit and doesn't affect cheek weld much. You would definitely get badass points for making a SOPMOD clone.

>>
>>30563735
They are fucking expensive. Just to raise it a little bit, I'm not sure if i'll go with a lower 1/3 or not. Maybe later in my AR owning life.

>>30563740
If I get badass points i'm all for it. I'll have to invest in a good optic then, which I was going to anyway. As for the light I have light mounts and a good light, but i've felt this AR with a light attached and it is not pleasant to hold. I'll have to ponder a bit more, maybe get a lighter light. I can swap out the grip, the houge one is comfy but it spreads out my fingers a bit too much if i'm being honest. I already have a classic A2.
Have any pics of true SOPMOD's that I can save?

Are these 18-inch barrels?

I'm trying to decide what length of barrel to put on my first AR build from parts. I'd love to have a chance to hit marks at 300 yards and practice for that distance - I would definitely need to get a longer barrel than 16", right? Would I want/need to get a 20" barrel?

>>30563535
>I prefer single stage triggers for all forms of shooting.

Interesting. I've been doing research on some triggers and on a bunch of forums everyone talks about how they can't go back to single-stage after firing a two-stage.

I'm torn between this ALG ACT tuned by Geissele:
http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/ALG_Defense_Combat_Trigger_ACT_Tuned_By_Geissele_p/alg-act.htm
for 65$

or

the rock river arms national match two-stage
http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/RRA_Two_Stage_Match_Trigger_Kit_AR0093NMK_p/rra-ar0093nmk.htm
for 100$.

Any thoughts on these? The sense I was getting online was that the two-stagers were more accurate. Any truth to this statement?

>>
>>30563796
Your monolithic hollowpoints (barnes, hornady gmx, nosler e tip) in the 62-70gr range are the best by a fair margin.

Anything loaded with the Speer Deepcurl (fed fusion, fed LE barrier, speer gold dot) would be my #2, the softpoint TAP third, winchester 64gr powerpoint fourth.

All of the Barnes bullets (tsx, ttsx, tac x, tac tx) perform very closely to each other.

Poly tips have better BC. Fairly flat tipped softpoints (speer deepcurl, nosler protected point and bonded) deflect less off windshields.

>>
>>30563972
It's good but the 4moa dot is too big IMO. Get a Primary Arms advanced micro dot or a Holosun with ACSS reticle if you don't have your heart set on a 30mm tube red dot.
>>
>>30563796
Speer Gold Dots are super cheap on PSA
>>
>>30563811
From a tactical shooting standpoint they have their merits. They are objectively inferior from a pure accuracy standpoint though.

A single stage has less takeup and can be made lighter safely. This is a good thing for calm precision shooting and a bad thing for combat.

The ALG is a nice, basic two stage. However, it is significantly inferior to the more expensive ones. The MBT for $125 would be a hell of an upgrade from it.

The RRA is a purpose built competition trigger. Feels very good, but in order to be CMP national match regulations it's a bit heavy. I don't like it.

Army: the way we fight is changing,
we need a new gun. We need to hit targets at longer range, targets that may be in body armour. We need to attach three pounds of lights, cameras, sights and lasers to it. We have done some research, lots of research in fact and this is our short list.
Pentagon: ok, write up what you want and we will do the science thing and the testing thing.
USMC: we want to have a say.
Pentagon: nope. You get cast offs like always.
Navy: specify powder cost, not just anodising and some brass fittings that the sailors will have to polish every day.
USAF: What colours will it come in?
Army: this is what we want, reliable, rugged, accurate, easy to use and adaptable. In that order.
Pentagon: we reserve the right to add cheep at the top.
Army: grumble grumble.
Airforce: we have to have ten round magazines and a bullet button versions for the baces in California.
>>
Pentagon: here it is.
Army: wait, don't we get a say in what you buy us?
Pentagon: we already signed the contract for five hundred thousand of them and well there is this senator that we owed a favour to and than Colt has this legal sword of Damocles hanging over us from the last contract fuck up. They have been paid up front to deliver a fifty thousand a year for the next ten years plus parts, tools and training.
Army: this is the same rifle as we took to Viet nam. The rifle keeps jamming, brakes when you look at it wrong, the gas system weakness prevents the use of advances ammunition, it can't hit a man at three hundred yards, the pissy little round can't drop a man with one shot and the ergonomics are so bad that soldiers dislocate fingers changing mags. It was not even on the short list.
Pentagon: but we are getting five of these for the price of four of those rifles that you had on your short list. Tell you what, we will let you add stuff to it as long as you don't change the body, barrel or internals. Contract conditions don't ya know.
Army: grumble grumble
USAF: black is too threatening, can we get it in blue?
USMC: yo bob, get all the old A2 rifles from the army and recondition them. Even second hand, they are better than the new gun.
Navy: nope nope nope. Ok well go with 12g for boarding and use MP5ks for everything else.
Pentagon: um, guys, we sort of have another problem.
USAF: I resent being called a "guy"
Pentagon: not now ladies.
Pentagon: that sight you wanted, well it turns out that we did not do the science and testing thing properly. Sorry, but we spent so much money on dinners for Colt reps that we did not have enough to pay a decent contractor to test the sights and had to go to India.
Army: oh, great. Now what do we do?
USMC: ha. We don't use that sight anyway.
USAF: you mean the sight may hurt some one?
Pentagon: no, no, it is just that the sight is not waterproof, can't hold zero and you can't see through it anyway.
>>
SAF: you mean the sight may hurt some one?
Pentagon: no, no, it is just that the sight is not waterproof, can't hold zero and you can't see through it anyway.
Army: oh goody. This is just so good.
USMC: ha.
Pentagon: stop complaining. You have a new rifle. You have a new sight. And all just in time for the draw down in Afghanistan.
Army: The rifle is a carbine. It is functionally the same gun we used in 1966. The sight is just as bad and you are sending us back to Afghanistan.
Navy: who cares, we just got another aircraft carrier. The name sucks dog balls. Who can't we have cool names like the Royal Navy, Warspite, indomitable, iron duke, dreadnaught. They are cool names.
USMC: hay army, want to borrow some ACOGs?

I'm looking for a gun lower that is FULLY ambi, that means a bolt release AND bolt CATCH on the right side. Why? Don't worry about it, I really just need to know my options. The only options I can find are LWRC and the ADM UIC lower.

The ADM UIC receiver set weights like 1.5 lbs, isn't that too heavy?

LWRC Lowers are impossible to find, should I just buy a LWRC M6IC-DI? I would still need to buy a nicer trigger for it and maybe a stock. It should have a nicer trigger at that price, IMHO.

Really, I just wish their was a light weight TRULY ambi lower out there...
