I'm looking at getting a .45 caliber HK handgun so I can carry a gun chambered in .45 Super in the woods, but am having trouble figuring out which one to buy. I already have a Glock 20, but don't like it for various reasons and want something higher quality.

Costs about $1000 more than I want to spend, but seems to have an edge on the other guns as it was the only one designed specifically to shoot .45 Super instead of just .45 ACP +P.

Used guns are fairly affordable, around $600-700. Trigger reach is too long for my hands in double action, though. LEM is workable, but weird. Because the reach is still so long, I found my finger shifting on the trigger in between shots. I think I could make it work if I carried it cocked-and-locked, but none of my other carry guns have a manual safety, so this may not be such a good situation when a bear decides to charge at me in the woods.

Can't seem to find any for under $900-1000, new or used. Haven't been able to find them in gun stores to hold one either, but I have heard that they have a shorter trigger reach than the USP. Might be the best option, but need to confirm the trigger reach details. If it's the same as a P30, then it would be workable.

About as affordable as the full size USP, if not moreso because of surplus police guns in the market. CDNN has brand new ones right now for $700. Fits my hand very well, and I like the feel and ergonomics...overall, my favorite feeling gun, but not sure if it would really be a good idea to shoot .45 Super out of this compact. Has a low 8 round capacity, but factory "elephant foot" 10 round magazines are available, and bring the total round count to an acceptable number for me.

Have not had a chance to hold one. Same capacity as USP Compact. Seems like basically the same gun as the USP Compact except for ergonomic differences, and costs $300 more.

General consensus is, with fullsize HK handguns, .45 super is okay to use, but they do not endorse the use of .45 super at all.
Compacts will beat themselves to death without the dual recoil spring.
USP is your best bet, but I just sold mine after trying to love it, but the ergos and trigger are garbage unless you get the USP .45 Tactical.

I have owned over a hundred guns over the years. I'm not trying to brag. I'm only saying that because I recently went through all my receipts and bills of sales and realized just how many I'd owned. Of all those guns, I like the USP Compact the best for the category of polymer service pistol. I think the ergos are actually really nice for my hand, and the match LEM trigger I have in both of mine, in 9mm and .40, is among the best for this type of pistol that I've ever shot. I'd have no trouble buying a third one. It's just the prospect of shooting .45 Super out of a compact which I'm not sure about. The full size USP is a big fucker and I've shot one in 9mm. The trigger reach is a sticking point for me, though.

the Mark 23 and USP 45 are the only two that were specifically tested for .45 Super. the Mark 23 can handle a near limitless supply of Super as it's lower pressure than the 200gr +P+ it was meant to shoot.
the USP 45 will need a new recoil spring after 8-10k rounds of super, it's tested as safe, but recommended not to be used by HK, and will become a little snappy.
45 super is ~6000 psi over 45 ACP, and ~4000 over +P.

I'm not finding .45 Super very cheap, so unfortunately, I don't think I'd be able to feed any gun a "steady diet" of the stuff. Maybe as little as 100-200 rounds a year.

In 1999 The USP Match was $800 and you couldn't give them away. Angelina Jolie does an abortion of a movie and now you can't get one for less than $3500, $7500 if you want the 9mm version.
