I lived my whole life in California, a shit state that I would say goes beyond simply anti-gun.
It is anti self defense. Doing anything that even implies you value your self preservation is seen as suspect. I suspect it started in the public school system when they started the zero-tolerance bullshit that criminalized bullies and their victims for daring to defend themselves.
Later on in college, I even had people tell me that I don't have the right to "defend myself' whether in a fight or in court since nobody "needs to" if they're in the right. The "it's OK if we do it" mentality makes me sick.

Start on my grand-dad's rifle when I was around 6 or so. It was a 1945 Marlin single shot 22lr that he bought when he got out of the navy. Mom bought me my first rifle when I was 11, a Ruger 10/22.
By 20 I had a few guns, and then sold them off when I joined the army. Did my time, came home, have been bouncing around from place to place, job to job every since. Over the years a lot of guns have come in gone for me, usually selling them off when things go bad and I need quick cash. I regret it every damn time but hey.... you do what you gotta do, right?

Fast forward to senior year of highschool, dad has bought and sold a few guns since then and is kinda fudd-ish about ARs, the only one he owned was an original colt H-bar that my grandpa bought back in the day and an AR10 he bought right after the AWB was lifted, we were at a gun show where I found an AR15, DPMS oracle, for about 600$. I had been saving money was going to buy my first rifle. Dad said I shouldn't buy an AR15 and dosed me with all the fudd lore on the issue but I was insistent.
The girl behind the counter was an 8/10 redhead who was my age (I didn't ask her out but I should have). I was nervous and excited about my gun and when she asked for my ID, I didn't hand it to her with my credit card, so I said " oh sorry, it's my first time" and dad starts snickering, he could see that I was nervous about the cute grill.
I blush, she blushes and says " well you're actually my first too, I have never sold a gun before" this was the hardest I have ever seen my dad laugh in my life.
That's how I got into guns.

bought a XD9 towards the latter end of my enlistment, brought it home when I separated. I may end up leaving the states in a few years when I am done with college (The only reason I only have one) and I would rather pass it on to my brother than sell it.
