Part 1/3

If you need a gun for home defense/and or dangerous happenings, your best bet is an AR15.

Let’s talk about why the AR15 is the BEST option for a SHTF scenario.

The AR15 is the weapon of choice for the US Military and most, if not all US Police forces.

The ammunition (5.56/.223) is extremely common with Every US community, USMIL/POLICE included, and is an accurate, hard hitting round. It is also light, and inexpensive.

The AR15 itself is a truly remarkable design, and is utterly reliable if manufactured correctly. The famed “AR15 is unreliable” saying goes as far back to Vietnam, where the US government attempted to use Surplus 30-06 powder in early M193 ammunition. This is very wrong, and lead to early M16s not working properly. If the Government had followed the suggested power recommendation, the reputation never would have materialized.

Let’s talk a bit about the AR15s obvious competitor, the AK. The Russians designed a very nice rifle with the AK47, and further improved it into the AKM. But you have to understand that Russia is not allowed to export AKMs to the US anymore, and modern AKs for sale in the US are either Eastern European parts kits (of dubious quality) or brand new US made AKs (of EXTREMLY dubious quality).

Not to mention the fact that the AK is no more reliable than the AR15 in the first place, and its ammunition, the 7.62x39 is a rather anemic cartridge past 300 yards, and has the ballistics of a bowling ball. The AK and its Ammunition is also not used by any sizable US Police Forces, and almost all 7.62x39 ammunition is manufactured overseas, much of it IN RUSSIA, you can see issues with the availability of spare parts and ammunition in a crisis.

I am not suggesting the AK is a bad platform, merely that it is not the best choice for a “Life and Liberty” gun.

Now let's talk about how to actually get an AR15.

Part 2/3

It is highly advisable that you BUILD your AR15, as you save quite a bit of money doing this, and you get to tailor the rifle to your preferences from the beginning.

There are 3 forms of common AR15 builds that you can start with, keep in mind, once you get familiar with the platform, you’ll learn of more, but these require no tinkering to make work.

16” Mid Length, 20” Rifle Length, and 14.5 Carbine Length.

16” Mid Length is what I recommend to those getting a new AR, as it is the minimum legal barrel length to keep your AR considered a rifle, and not a “pistol”(thus allowing you to have a stock without NFA paperwork)

This is a soft shooting and well balanced combination, and is utterly reliable. “Mid Length” refers to the gas system length, with many prebuilt ARs, 16” rifles will simply have a Carbine Length gas system, which is outdated, and increased felt recoil/parts wear.

Here are some good brands to look at when BUILDING an AR. I may leave out some, but any listed here will be QUALITY.

PSA, BCM, Daniel Defense, Noveske, Midwest Industries, Aero, KAC, LMT, Rainer Arms, and VLTOR

PSA and BCM are considered the best for new shooters because of their milspec quality and affordable price points while providing excellent QC and parts quality.
going to pay more for this convenience, and some of these have out of date features, such as carbine length gas systems on 16" rifles.

You should avoid Red Barn, Radical Firearms, and PSA PTAC.
>>
>>30553551
Part 3/3

Here’s some general advice for all things AR15 related

It is generally a good idea to stick to "Mil-spec" guidelines, or above when building an AR. Everything I recommend will meet or surpass these.

It is a good idea to have 500 rounds of quality, brass case ammo in storage.

M193 is the best ammo to stockpile.

1/7 or 1/8 barrel twists is the best.

Only buy Magpul mags, Lancer L5 mags, or GI mags with Magpul followers.(Shitty mags are the #1 reason a rifle is unreliable)

I personally recommend that those new to the platform buy a Complete Upper, and a Complete Lower from any of the companies I recommended, they will all be interchangeable.

Don't worry about fancy shit, free floating a rifle right away isn't needed, and fancy optics aren't required, but both are nice.

If you plan on using this rifle for defense, a weapon mounted light is 100% necessary, bad things happen at night, seriously it’s not mall ninja shit and anyone who has actually used a rifle at night can confirm this.

Arguably just as commonly found in the US as 5.56/.223, but jesus christ you could atleast do the credit of mentioning 5.45x39 when discussing ballistics.

I shot an AR-15 (Assault Rifle version 15) for the first time yesterday. Firing an AR-15 is horrifying, menacing and very very loud. It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon.

But mostly, I was just terrified.

I’ve shot pistols before, but never something like an AR-15. Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).

The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable.

Even in semi-automatic mode, it is very simple to squeeze off two dozen rounds before you even know what has happened. If illegally modified to fully automatic mode, it doesn’t take any imagination to see dozens of bodies falling in front of your barrel.

All it takes is the will to do it.

Very few places have any mentionable quantity of 7.62x39 in stock, as far as actual stores.

The vast majority of what is available is FMJ patterned after m43, which even the gomnies stopped using entirely in ~1970 (with the advent of m67). As such they offer very poor terminal ballistics with a late yaw and smallish permanent cavity. Most of the Russian/e. Euro softpoints and hollowpoints also utterly fail to expand, providing even worse terminal performance. Yes, there are a few good expanding loads available but they are significantly more expensive than softpoint 5.56 while still performing worse than the best 5.56, and are extremely scarce.

5.45 is basically completely unavailable outside of internet sales and select Cabelas stores, and has even worse bullet selection than 7,62. Yes, it shoots flatter than and tends to be somewhat more accurate than 7,62, but even the best of the best (hornady steel match 70gr) is still at best 1.5moa ammo.

The only intermediate rifle round that offers better terminal performance across the entire effective range of an "assault rifle" (going by the military definition and intended role) than a 70gr TTSX 5.56 load is a 100gr TTSX 6.5gren load. But it does so at twice the recoil and 4x the cost for very marginal improvements inside 400m.

>>30554087
>Very few places have any mentionable quantity of 7.62x39 in stock, as far as actual stores.

Dude, I don't know where you are, but I've been in a huge variety of Minnesota gun stores, from Twin Cities area, to rural south land, and wilderness woodland stores.

Every fucking one has had substantial stock of 7.62x39 in atleast two flavors.
>>
>>30554106
Currently on the rural/suburban fringe of a major city in MO. In the last 10 years Ive lived in Alabama, Georgia, both Carolinas, Washington, and Idaho.

Maybe 1 in 10 stores, including the big box stores (cabelas, gander, academy, big5, dicks) had ANY 7,62 and what they did have was ALWAYS Tula 123gr fmj.

Most of the places that had any only had a few (as in <5) 20rd boxes

Only once did I see any form of non-FMJ 7.62x39, and it was a Gander in STL that wanted $53 for a 20rd box of Winchester Super X.

My first Surefire was a 6PX, a handheld, which I put in an offset Gear Sector mount on the left side of the gun at 10:30. Obviously, as a handheld, this setup requires constant thumb pressure, but it's a relatively natural way to hold the rifle so it's not too bad. This setup is both cheaper and lighter than a dedicated weaponlight. I got my mount from Rainier on sale a long time ago and the flashlight from amazon, which put the total cost was around 100-110, half the price of the scout.

https://www.gearsector.com/view/product/261/

For my new AR build though, I managed to snag a brand new M952v which was out of production, but which Surefire now advertises on their site again (at a price higher than I paid) with the rail mounted switch. This is very nice arrangement, though it is expensive, and I'm pretty sure weighs a bit more due to the mount and larger assembly. It's also the best looking light there is, but that's hardly a good reason to pay as much extra as you would need to get it through Surefire. I got it through SWFA, and it looks like they still have them. Other people here have gotten theirs through Ebay, but I'm paranoid about knockoffs (and I'm obsessive compulsive so I don't like buying used since the old owner might be careless about germs or toxins [yes, I'm weird]) If you buy the M592v from SWFA and the railed switch from amazon, that will be a total of 500, compared to the less flashy but still workable P6X solution. You could also pay somewhere between both and get a Scout but I can't speak to the quality of those since I don't own any.

Also the Vampire models are probably an unnecessary additional cost unless you have NV of some kind. Yes, they do look cooler but you probably don't want to spend money on an infrared mode you'll never use. Also you can save around 80 bucks if you're fine with the standard unrailed tape switch. You'll have to ziptie it or something to keep it on the gun. Or use the Magpul M LOK mount.

Pic not mine.

I'll discuss ARs.

I have an SPR by BHI with no forward assist. I've had rifles that didn't seat when you hit the FA so over the years I've taken to simply pushing the bolt forward with my thumb through the ejection port. It's 100% seated when I do so and I know it.

So there's that.

Source: 3 years in combat.

>>
>>30556998
It's a discuss ARs thread. Saw someone talking about their Forward Assist. Thought I'd bring up a lesson learned I had which is after years of use I don't trust them. It's more positive control to simply push on the bolt with your thumb.

Cheers anon.

Anyone have a guide on camouflaging an AR?

I just bought my first AR-15. Coming from a milsurp and AK guy, I don't know a whole lot about them, but I'm trying to learn.

I want to camouflage mine, sorta like a flektarn pattern, but I'm worried about fucking up.

I have a Ruger AR556, babby's first AR, and I'm looking for my best route on slings and sling attachment points.

Right now I have a Magpul CTR stock and M-LOK carbine length handguard on the rifle. The CTR has a hole for QD swivels as does the bayonet lug. I'm looking to add the M-LOK Paraclip mount to the handguard and use the Magpul MS3 sling. This gives me two locations to mount the sling on the forend, with the ability to go to single point if I want.

Am I making this too difficult, or is this a good option?

tl;dr how do I into slings on AR-15?

i ordered a lower from psa, mind you this is the second time i have done this from the same lgs. i passed the bcg and paid the transfer fee, they gave me the lower. then they say oh you need to be 21, gib lower back.
this was before i or they knew about you having to be 21 for a completed lower, all i wanted was my transfer fee back. they refused to give it back so i didnt give the lower back.

after arguing for a while i finally got my money back. whats retarded is at the time they were fairly new and i had spent a lot of money on ammo and two other rifles there and they all knew me.

If it is a pre 2006 bushmaster then its pretty decent quality. But that will also mean its a decade plus old

for 700 you could have the same quality in a new rifle. A rifle that some bubba hasn't fucked up.

Get a kineckt qd rail section, great if you don't have a switched light and want to move it during the day so not slamming off knee in 1 point. Gear sector mount is a work of art

Well a quad rail has rail on 4 sides, and they generally are expensive and fuck heavy but have a lot of mounting space.

Mlok / keymod are aesthetically superior (my opinion) and are generally lighter but still give you the option to mount tacticool bullshit on your gun (mlok best (opinion)) while still being free float and having a wide price margin

I like magpul BUIS pro. very low profile. I'd suggest getting a keymod or mlok rail. quad rails are fine but heavier and bulkier than they need to be.

in pic related, top rail is a quad rail aka picatinny rail while the bottom is called MLOK. see >>30558970 for an example of keymod rail.

only difference is how things like lights, foregrips, etc mount to them but MLOK or keymod will be lighter and slimmer than a quad rail
>>
>>30559283

I have a gear sector mount see >>30559314
but I bought an arisaka inline mlok mount to switch my SF over when I get the new rail
>>
>>30559260
Thx. Saving for strike eagle and a mount. Red dots and glasses don't mix with me.
>>

>>30559314
Something neither of us mention is that a lot of quad rails are like fucking cheese graters to your fingers and if you aren't wearing bitch mittens, your hands will hurt.

Not to say you can't get rail covers but non quad rails tend to be easier on the hands

Hope I dont get banned.

>>30559274
Oh nice how do you like it, haven't played w one yet
>>
>>30559330

yeah thats why my quad is completely covered in ladder covers, but I feel no need for any rail covers on my MLOK rail
>>
I tried my buddy's Larue MBT trigger yesterday and couldn't notice much difference between it and a milspec trigger, besides the smoother, wider surface area. Are $200+ triggers a meme?
>>
>>30559260
>was it your first purchase?
No, I own a .22lr, a .380 acp and a .38/45

>did you ever get a misdemeanor of any kind?
A brawling charge when I was 17, but its off my record now.

>could have been delayed because people are panic buying
I hope so. The fbi website said its probably because i match the physical description of a wanted criminal or something like that. I dunno man. Its gay. Ruined my weekend

shit b8 but I'll bite. for starters a milspec trigger is SS while the MBT is two stage. dont know how you could miss that

.38/44

typo my bad. A s&w model 20. Got it cheap with the cops issued holster still with it.
>>
>>30559312
>>30559314

I don't mind a little extra weight so I think I will go with a quad rail. I appreciate the suggestions.

>>30559330

See, the thing about tacticool bullshit is that it goes really well with a foregrip.
>>
>>30559423

if you want a free float quad rail under $200 look at midwest industries
>>
>>30553485

I need an AR for SHTF and I'm looking for recommended components. I have the following requirements:

Reliable
DI gun
16" barrel
interchangeability, I don't mind non-standard parts, as long as they can be replaced with standard parts. (drop in trigger etc.)
must function with shitty ammo, just in case. Even steel cased.
must have forward assist
M-Lok rails
NICE iron sights
NICE trigger
I also don't mind good looks....

My area is suburban, I might bug out to innawoods. My budget for JUST THE RIFLE is $1500. I have mags and ammo, will get glass later. I have built a shit-tier AR before, no issues there. Build from scratch or not, doesn't matter.

14.5" carbine gas or 14.5" midlength gas?
>>
>>30559494
carbine
>>
>>30559440
What gets me is that their FF quads weigh hardly anything more than their MLOK or Dickmod offerings.
>Carbine-length G3 M-Series MLOK rail- 6.7 oz
>Carbine-length G2 Free-Float Quadrail- 9.0 oz
I don't know if that's MI making light quadrails or heavy MLOK/Keymod.

Meanwhile, KAC's carbine RAS clocks in at 11.5 oz.
>>
>>30558426
You'll be fine.
>>
>>30559515

Light quad rails I think. Their mlok rail weights are comperable to other companies

Their drop-ins manage to be even lighter.
>Carbine gen 2 two-piece drop-in quadrail- 7.5 oz

Their middy version which I'm trying to sell feels like fucking nothing by itself.
>>
>>30559465

Build. SSA-E trigger, geissele mk8 or rail of choice, magpul pro BUIS or stolen valor, FN, BCM or ballistic advantage barrels are fairly priced
>>
>>30559515
I saved somewhere around 10-11 oz. Going from 15" quad to 13" mlok
>>
>>30559528
Any malfunctions with it?
>>
>>30553485
556 is gay. Great for killing pajama men and nigger with no body armor. When cops, gooks and who ever come in with plate carriers you're all fucked. 7.62 will make its appearance again as master race round
>>
>>30559547
Does FN sell induvidual barrels or do you have to get a PSA upper with the FN barrel?
>>
>>30559545

When I switch from my 12.65" quad to the 15" mlok I bought I'm only going down 4 ounces in weight IIRC. Geissele mk8 13" is only 3.5 ounces lighter than my quad
>>
>>30559550
Any downside to putting light FCG springs in a 300blk gun?
