>>
>>30548438
I was thinking in real life applications all you need to design is a small flying indoor maneuverable quadcopter loaded with explosives and shrapnel for a cost effective suicide robot that will clear room by room. How feasible would that be in an urban combat environment? Just sending a bunch of them to slowly clear out a dense urban area instead of risking human life.

>>30556418
Quit being willfully difficult. If it's an active shooter then the priority is to stop him/her/it by any means necessary, including but not exclusive to lethal force. If the shooter stops, drops his gun, and lays face down on the floor the cops would dog pile and cuff. If he keeps shooting he cops shoot back. It's a simple matter you're over complicating by being contrarian and b8ing.

A couple reasons- bomb bots are relatively new tech, hideouts without hostages aren't incredibly common so there's usually risk of injuring others, and there are fewer hideouts where the police want to straight up kill the guy rather than take him in
>>
>>30547282
Out of curiosity, Am i the only one to think that, since the man had no hostage (as far as I understand the situation) and there was no policeman in immediate danger, they should have equipped the robot with a flashbang device and attempt to arrest him instead of going strait for the lethal route? In that situation of nobody in immediate danger, how do you legaly justify the decision to simply killing the guy? The fact of accepting to take a certain amount of risks to arrest people, even armed is to some extend part of the police duty?
It would have offered an ethically and judiciary superior outcome to at least attempt to take him alive (even in the device blows up so close it pops his brain out of his ears, having a the opportunity to say "at least we tried" would have been valuable in terms of public communication) and avoided a fair deal of future discussion over police militarisation.

The statement the police gave can be interpreted as they detonated one of his bombs which killed him, or they put a bomb on it and blew him to bits.

I don't know if anyone has said anything more.

I'm normally pretty critical of the cops; but after losing 5 men I wouldn't blame them for just blowing the son of a bitch up rather than charging a fortified position. Although they may not want to admit to the bleeding hearts that that's what they did.
>>
>>30564026
The guy was a fucking operator. You can see it in one of the videos showing him running up on one of the officers and gunning him down. Someone probably would have gotten shot trying to take him alive. I don't think what they did was wrong at all. Just because the shooting had stopped doesn't mean they weren't still in a live combat situation.

He was a carpenter with McDonald's ribbons who had more training than your average beat cop, coupled with an intent to die and do as much damage as he could before that happened.

Funny thing is that if the police judged you guilty and sentenced before any trial you would probably be bitching and moaning about your oh so precious amendements, police state infringing your rights and shit. Not saying the guy didn't deserve a death penalty, he certainly did, but that's not the police to decide even if taken in the act of a criminal offense, if they had any opportunity to take him alive with acceptable risks, which really seem (emphasis on "seem", here) to be the case considering the situation. In any case this is a PR nightmare, more so with the recent yet-another-black-guy-shot-video a couple of days before, and a decision which definitely doesn't seem to have been taken with a cool head.

>>30565739
Problem is, it seems that there was no clear and present danger to the life of anyone at that point. From what i understand the guy was cornered and could have been shot down if he made a move to get out and threaten someone. I realize that what is "clear and present danger" is subject to interpretation but that's a highly slippery slope and i'd rather not get further down that way in the future.

The criticism is not about the way it was performed. Ethically speaking there is still someone pulling a trigger, it is indeed equivalent. The criticism is about if it was justified or not by the situation at that time, or if it was done because the robot solution made it easy.

>In 2006, Samsung Techwin announced a $200,000, all weather, 5.56 mm robotic machine gun and optional grenade launcher to guard the Korean DMZ. It is capable of tracking multiple moving targets using IR and visible light cameras, and is under the control of a human operator. The Intelligent Surveillance and Guard Robot can "identify and shoot a target automatically from over two miles (3.2 km) away." The robot, which was developed by a South Korean university, uses "twin optical and infrared sensors to identify targets from 2.5 miles (4 km) in daylight and around half that distance at night."

>It is also equipped with communication equipment (a microphone and speakers), "so that passwords can be exchanged with human troops." If the person gives the wrong password, the robot can "sound an alarm or fire at the target using rubber bullets or a swivel-mounted K-3 machine gun." It was reported in 2006 that South Korea's soldiers in Iraq are "currently using robot sentries to guard home bases."[3]
>>

Note that that was in response to the south koreans noticing (or officially noticing) that the north koreans had been flying RC planes with cameras stolen from japanese tourists on them deep into south korea (using Nork military radar transmitters and satellites to extend the range on the RC plane)

It's got range finders and stabilisation systems.

Of course it's less impressive than the french using remote operated Weasels during that schnafu in Mali.

Anyone have that website that showed what different PDs bought from the feds? I'll bet it would show up on there.

Okay. Now how powerful would that explosion be?
Let's find out.

C4 has an RE rating of 1.34. That means for every unit of C4 you have, that is the same amount of power as about 1 1/3 units of TNT.

So in this case, the amount of C4 allegedly used (3/4 pound) would be equivalent to about one pound of TNT, or 0.453592 kilograms.
Which leaves the next question: how lethal is one pound of TNT?

Assuming an open explosion with no additional shrapnel, a kilo of TNT is inherently lethal out to about a meter, with major injuries still possible past that. Multiply that by 0.453592 kilos, and you have a probable lethality radius of 0.453592 meters.

So assuming that the sniper was in an open area, and there was no other explosives nearby, the bomb would have to be within 0.453592 meters, or 1 foot and 6 inches, to kill the sniper.

There is an unwritten rule in law enforcement that everyone knows and no one talks about.

If you are a cop killer, you will not appear in court, you will be killed, there will be no due process.

Look at history. Rarely do cop killers appear in court. You may have an opinion if this is right or wrong, but this is the way it is, and this is the way it will always be.
>>30580544
This guy gets it. When you kill a cop the rules change.
>>
>>30578597
You can threaten whoever the fuck you want pull a gun threaten to kill police if they show up when police show up and try to shoot you and you shoot them in return you are legally justified if they didn't attempt an arrest.

I'm not the guy who originally posted but this isn't a guy I want to defend in any way shape or form. Rejecting someone due process because they break the law defeats democracy as we know it.
Also maybe it was justified in this case, but it sets a precedent that its okay for police to be the judge and executioner next time. Next time they might bomb a drug king pin, most people are fine with that too. Then a high profile murder, then a low level drug dealer, then the wrong house because police and swat have been known in several cases to go to the wrong house and kill home owners. Just drone strike the guy going 120mph down the high way since he's putting others at risk and any chasing officers at risk. Its okay though, "we live in a time of war, sir."

Propaganda and Chechnya.

More heavily armed something is the more impressive it seems, we have no idea how easy the Uran is to operate, how much it breaks down, how well it deals with obstacles or a dozen other important details. What we do know is it has a lot of dakka, and so people will talk about it. For comparison look at the US Army's comparable system which recently underwent testing in Washington, all it has was a .50 cal or 40mm grenade launcher and no-one talks about it. For actual use autocannon + ATGM is a good mix, which is used on a number of conventional AFVs, the addition of the RPO is unusual but Russia does love its thermobarics.

Too add. I don't think that the cops or city should be punished criminally or that a civil suit should be brought up. I do think that there should be a condemning of the practice of using explosives to kill criminals. When a criminal is shot in defense they can still be taken to court if they survive. Someone blown up with c4 does not survive and was never intended to be taken in to custody. That is the part I believe violates due process.

You're an autistic fuck that has yet to realize that there is a grey area between what the law is and how the law is enforced.

>due process should only apply when the government wants
Try refuting what I said instead of name calling.
The Grey area of laws is determined by the courts. Not the people tasked with bringing someone there.

If you get pulled for speeding a cop can chose to write you a summons to court or let you go. A cop doesn't get to decide speeding is a felony and you should now pay a $10,000 fine. That's the gray area which can be decided by a cop.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you are saying. What I am saying is that how things are supposed to work, isn't how they actually work. You will never have enough social support to change how cops deal with cop killers.
Fact is, when someone is specifically a cop killer, the rules change, and that will never change.

I'm not saying your criticism is wrong, I'm saying you're autistic and stupid not to realize that it DOES NOT MATTER.

When you kill cops, the rules change. Professional criminals understand this, cops understand this, and the public understands this. Like I said, it's a unwritten rule.

Also, there is no slippery slope, because when cops murder people without due process and without using proper use of force they do get criticised and protested about, and charged, and held accountable. See the whole BLM movement for an example.

>I'm not disagreeing with anything you are saying. What I am saying is that how things are supposed to work, isn't how they actually work. You will never have enough social support to change how cops deal with cop killers.
Correct I know this I honestly wouldn't expect otherwise. I have family and friends that are LEOs. Brought up this idea with many of them and they agree with my points that follow but have the same ideas that you also say.
>Fact is, when someone is specifically a cop killer, the rules change, and that will never change.
I know that's how it does work. I'm merely stating that's not how it should work (idealistically not so much realistically) just so people can consider opposing views points and how it could potentially effect others in the chance it becomes like my slippery slope. Although it was a very extreme case.
Not trying to change how it works again just trying to make people think more since I don't think people do as much as they should.
>I'm not saying your criticism is wrong, I'm saying you're autistic and stupid not to realize that it DOES NOT MATTER.
I'll agree with this except for the insults. My post was a bit serious sounding.
>When you kill cops, the rules change. Professional criminals understand this, cops understand this, and the public understands this. Like I said, it's a unwritten rule.
Agreed. This does have implications of potential blind obedience in the future though.
>Also, there is no slippery slope, because when cops murder people without due process and without using proper use of force they do get criticised and protested about, and charged, and held accountable. See the whole BLM movement for an example.
Debatable if all/some the cases the BLM is upset about fall in this category but I also agree kinda.

Going to bed it's 4am. Goodnight hopefully you have a good day.
