Half-Life's MP5 was a bunch of contradicting mess.

The first person model is a MP5SD3 with a floating tube underneath with no trigger and the gun fires unsuppressed sounds.

The third person model is a MP5A3, again with a tube magically attached underneath, leaving a weird slanted gap.

What would you do to fix this gun? You cannot assume the HD pack's M4 assault rifle version.

Would you keep the SD base or regular version? How would you customize it to mount the tube properly but still make it look faithful to the round SD look?

half life 2 was even funnier, the revolver is called a Python in the game files and by Barney once ingame but literally has "Anaconda" on the barrel. And the floating bullets freeman magically puts in without a sped loader already have spent primers.

To reduce total ammo types. In the console version, they made them separate again like they were in early development, which meant that your ammo pickups for the 9mmar were halved and throughout much of the last area before Xen there was no ammo for it. Making them (glock and smg) use a common caliber was the best choice from the gameplay perspective.

It's kinda idiotic to nitpick about vidya guns. Especially those in older titles, as devs were working on tight polycount and texture resolution budgets, and potentially didn't have too good source material to base their models on. Everyone knows about the mirrored guns in CS and such (it was kind of a fad for a while), which is a good example of this: showing the shells ejecting, huge muzzle flash blast out with each shot, and the MC's hands doing the charging action on the left-side when reloading was a way to visually clearly represent an action happening with it. It also allowed devs to not render the right-side of the gun.

If you look at the animation, you can see he dumps the casings into his hand, and just puts them back. It's a way to save a bit of resources.

A lot of the weirdness in Valve games are intentional, either for asthetic or gameplay reasons. I remember hearing some dev commentary on the AK in L4D2 basically saying "Yeah, it's some weird bastard child of an AKM, a 74, and a type 58, but we thought it looked cool."

saboted 5.56 with a notch in the magazine to halt advance.
same bolt head diameter, same headspace, a switch actuates your gas valve and which magazine feeding is blocked from. Recoil spring and buffer would be a problem, though but maybe having a two-stage captive spring and 5.56 in front and 12.7 in back means that the second spring is only engaged when there's enough recoil force from the 12.7

With Doom, especially 2016 Doom you can just assume that it's far enough in the future that they have space wizard guns that are somehow able to hold hundreds of rounds per magazine. Or maybe they're like that one rifle in CoD Advanced Warfare that have an onboard bullet manufacturing thingy, and all the "ammo" you pick up is actually feed stock for the device.
