what's a good/reliable home defense shotgun for under $800 /k/? do I need to go with a higher budget than that?

don't care if it's pump or semi-auto and recoil isn't an issue
>>
>>30514278
Get a Mossberg 500 for $300 and spend the rest on ammo and aftermarket
>>
>>30514306
this.

mossy 500 will take any beating you can give it. unless you insist on semi auto or something this is the best option
>>
>>30514278
if you like patching huge holes in your drywall then sure

just get a carbine and hollow points to cut down on collateral damage
>>
>>30514327
I thought of a carbine but I'd still rather go with a shotgun, I've had way more practice and feel more confident with one. Besides, some holes in the wall are nothing when you're still alive.
>>
>>30514278
The absolute best option would be a AR-15 carbine. Over penetration is less pronounced after the round hits and object and passes through causing it to tumble and "keyhole" losing most of it's terminal velocity with the next object it impacts. (often a wall or another badguy behind him)

You could purchase an AR-15 for around 500 bucks, they're reliable easily serviceable, and it's what the professionals use for a reason.

00 buck even loaded hot wont over penetrate or spread that much at all in home defense ranges.

stop memeing. shottys are good for HD
>>
>>30514278
If you have 800 get an AR-15 and a weapon light, and call it a day.
>>
>>30514364
Considering it'll be banned shortly it probably wouldn't make a great home defense gun as it'll be a collectible.
>>
>>30514390
>wont over penetrate
not the issue

>or spread that much
this is the issue.
the fact that buckshot doesnt spread much at that range means you dont get a peppering of holes in your drywall, you take a chunk out.
>>
Not to be a downer but if by some chance he ever has to use that HD gun?

Like it or not the courts going to go softer on someone defending their home with a shotgun then a carbine. Defense attorneys will try to fuck you over as some sort of over prepared psycho if you shoot their client with an 'assault weapon'. It's nothing personal part of the Defense's job is to cast doubt on your actions.

Having said that middle of the night, woken up from a sound sleep and Yea I'll take the broom gun with its more forgiving accuracy issues over a carbine. (At that range mind, not saying anything about beyond 20 ft. ^_^ )

Oh one last thing, be sure to check the "stand your ground' laws in your state. Some places actually expect you to make efforts to run away from someone in your own home, under penalty of law. (no really, google for more. )
>>
>>30514549
What if it's a Winchester lever-action carbine?
>>
>>30514482
>returned investment, undisputed best HD weapon, well within OPs price range.

C'mon man, you're giving it another advantage.
>>
>>30514569
They'll say you're like some sort of cowboy wannabe watching too much John Wayne and you're all about blasting the "bad guys" mainly the defendant.
>>
>>30514549
It's sad but true, I was watching a thing about a guy in Montana who killed some teenage punk raiding his garage for beer after haveing been robbed 2 times before. He's doing 70 years now because of "muh feelings" despite defending himself and his property
>>
>>30514487

youre not understanding, or are you implying thats what happens if you miss? you shouldnt miss at 10 feet and and if you dont miss the shot wont go all the way through his body even if its a hot loaded round
>>
OP your pic hit the nail on the head, get that thing and some #4 buckshot.
>>
>>30514687
Yes, I'm saying that's what happens when you miss, but I can understand how that shouldn't be an issue at these ranges.
>>
Op did say he's more familiar with a shot gun

I personally feel like my mossberg is a lot easier to fumble with when my adrenaline is high.

The girl friend also thinks the same way with her shitty 870 express... I didn't know about the issues always heard older guys talking about how nice they are.
>>
>>30514549
>Yea I'll take the broom gun with its more forgiving accuracy issues over a carbine.

Yeah, idiots like you say this shit all of the time, but the fact is you are shooting a .76 caliber hole at home defense distances. You still need to aim.
>>
>>30514680
Sounds a lot like that guy in northern MN recording himself killing kids
>>
>>30514680
He was an idiot who was talking about doing it though.
>>
>>30514327
>>30514364

You're forgetting something. Say you have a run-of-the-mill Mossy or Remmy, and you have a $700-$900 AR15.

Stop and ask yourself. Which would you rather have confiscated by the police in the event of a home invasion? Personally, the cops can confiscate my 500 and I wouldn't bat an eye. I like it, but I consider it sacrificial, because I have other more expensive guns that I would not want confiscated.
>>
>>30514688
Out of pure curiosity why #4
>>
>>30514819
>>30514680
>muh feelings
Yeah no. It's illegal in Montana to shoot someone to protect your stuff. There are fewer places than you think where you can get away with shooting someone who is just stealing stuff.

>>
>>30514944
This just proves how fucking stupid nogunz people are.

There is nothing wrong with planning ahead, and if you want to use a shot gun, plan ahead on some serious drywall repair. Or just get an AR-15 and understand you can just spackle over it, and repaint it.
>>
>>30514487
>>30514327
Holy shit why do I care about having to patch my fucking drywall? If I shoot somebody five times in the chest with a 9mm or a .223 I'm going to have holes in my fucking drywall. All rounds worthy of shooting somebody with in self defense are going to make holes in walls.
>>
I think patching .223 holes in drywall is easier than the chunk buckshot will make. But regardless, if we're talking cleanup, you're already gonna be replacing carpet if the fucker bleeds all over your shit.
>>
>>30515288
So just get a mossberg, some buckshot, and be done with it. Do you have kids? That's what I would worry about when people talk about over penetrating through drywall.
>>
>>30514911
In Illinois you can use lethal force on someone committing a "forcible felony"

The definition of "forcible felony" is as follows -
>"Forcible felony" means treason, first degree murder, second degree murder, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, robbery, burglary, residential burglary, aggravated arson, arson, aggravated kidnaping, kidnaping, aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm or permanent disability or disfigurement and any other felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any individual.

And this is Failinois, for fuck sake.
>>
Mossbergs are cool... as long as you aren't disassembling them. I fucking hate that you have to remove the trigger assembly (and any pistol grip stock before that) in order to field strip the gun. Couldn't they have made it so that everything comes out of the front like other shotguns? And what's up with that extractor and ejector moving around everywhere and that you have to hold up together while putting back the bolt in?
Nah, fuck Mossberg
>>
>>30514911
>There are fewer places than you think where you can get away with shooting someone who is just stealing stuff
Depends on where they're stealing it from. If they're on my property, I have Castle Doctrine and No Duty to Retreat on my side.
Who the fuck lives in Montana anyways?
>>
>>30515415
This

>Some U.S. jurisdictions require that a person retreat from an attack, and allow the use of deadly force in self-defense only when retreat is not possible or when retreat poses a danger to the person under attack. The duty to retreat is not universal, however. For example, police officers are not required to retreat when acting in the line of duty. Similarly, some courts have found no duty to retreat exists when a victim is assaulted in a place where the victim has a right to be, such as within one's own home.[1] The Model Penal Code[2] suggests statutory language that also recognizes an exception to the usual duty to retreat when the victim of the attack is in his or her own dwelling or place of work. It is common to exempt a person's home or car from the duty to retreat, known as the castle doctrine.

Thank god I don't live in a shit state.
>>
>>30514278

>Semi auto 12ga
>150 dollaryroos
>>
>>30514875
perfect mix of power vs. penetration.
>>
>>30515217
The different is those whole will be easy to fix, where as a gaping 4 inch hole from buck shot isn't.
>>
>>30515374
You have to do that maybe 2 times a year. Meanwhile you will have the best functioning shotgun for the money out there.
>>
>>30516721
Yes, but who cares?
>>
>>30516764
I do, especially since better options exist now, this isn't 1998.
>>
>>30514616
Nah. Its a total fudd gun. Just mention it was designed before the turn of the century.
>>
>>30514680
Detached garage? If so, sorry that is murder. You dont go shooting someone who steals beer out of your storage shed. If it was an attached garage and the perp forced entry I'd say that is justified.
>>
Everybody is talking about overpenetration in regards to property damage but it seems that the real threat would be hitting family or other non-burgalars.Then it comes down to .223 vs shot and which will get stopped by a wall.

>>30514787
I didn't't think it would be an issue on k but definatley way too many people are used to video games where shot turn to sawdust at 10 yards.
>>
>>30515215

That should cut down on drywall repair.

More stupidity, anything used for self-defense will over penetrate a person and hit something behind it.

Why don't you just let the grown ups speak.

>>30517112
No it isn't. It is not compatible with most M500 aftermarket accessories like foregrips, stocks, and most importantly it doesn't have that God tier safety.

>>30517198

Thx bro, Im good.

Who gives a shit about drywall. If your using a carbine worry about killing someone else in the house or your fucking neighbor.

If you dont hit a body, that round isnt going to stop at one interior wall.
And unless you live in a brick house the exterior walls wont fair much better.
>>
>>30517818
>If your using a carbine worry about killing someone else in the house or your fucking neighbor.

Again, more fucking stupidity. Ar-15s over penetrate the least out of all of the big 3 defense options.
>>
>>30517858
Funny. Ive shot thru a hell of alot more steel plates with my ar than with my shotgun.

5.56 looses velocity but it still penetrates. Stack up some sheetrock and plywood and tell me how they compare.

I have. And 5.56 goes thru more layers than most shot.

Bird shot - #4 wont go thru all four sheets. Yes you can shoot badguys with bird shot. But i recommend #4.

why not use .410 for home defense?
>>

Yeah birdshot has no place in self-defense, unless you are a stupid fudd.

Why is it shit though?
Why can't I use 3" .410 000 buck and be fine?

Not trying to shitpost here, I know fuck all about shotgun ammo and just want to understand why .410 is a bad idea for home defense.
>>
>>30514278
Get a Mossy 500, take the shells and empty the buckshot, fill it w/ a mix of 93 octane, alcohol and pieces of styrofoam and those f**kers will be scared shitless when you shoot them, but you'll set your house on fire...
>>
>>30518975
You will only have 3 pellets of that, and it wont sling as hard as if it was a twelve gauge.

>>30514853
You're acting like you don't actually get the gun back. If there's a home invasion and police don't have a reason to send it to a DA, your gun is going right back in your pocket. They might keep it for a week in a slightly humid environment, but nothing bad is going to happen. Home invasions aren't hurricane Katrina, police can't just decide to keep thousand dollar pieces of property for years on end for no reason.
>>
>>30514487
Patching drywall is like a $20 job and you'll never know the difference. Unless you hit a pipe or something it's no big deal, and even if that happens, paying a couple hundred for a good repair job is a lot better than dying.
>>
>>30519026
