For midlength 18" a standard carbine buffer should be fine, I think.
A heavier buffer might make recoil a little softer, but it's not like the AR has a lot of recoil in the first place.
You could also try to find a 18" with rifle gas if you'd like.

I personally think Grendel is the best small frame cartridge ballistically, and industry support is growing steadily. Like that other guy said, ammo availability is growing. Several companies make barrels and bolts now too. Its a fantastic cartridge out of any barrel length. I was originally gonna go with a .223 Wylde chamber but the advantages at range are too good to pass up
