What does /k/ think about .300 AAC Blackout? I'm looking at making a 9" build with a suppressor for my next project

Pic related: Gonna probably go with this BCM upper
>>
>>30473076
It's a cool caliber but it's like 3x more expensive that 7.62x39 at best so I can't afford that shit
>>
>>30473092
That's the one thing I'm worried about. I love the versatility of the caliber but it's roughly twice as expensive as .223/5.56
>>
meme caliber
>>
>>30473128
Depends how much you can shoot I guess

personally I think .300 blackout is a no-brainer in terms of performance over 5.56, so it's worth it.

I own plenty of guns just for the fun of it. I consider my 300blk upper to be just that, something to have fun with.

Subs suppressed are a hoot, and I feel it is justification enough to build at least an upper for. The fact that super loads like the 110gr TSX perform well on medium game is a bonus.
>>
Why won't someone make an AK with an adjustable gas system for subsonics?

Would be a good HD gun, supressed....
No one makes subsonic x39 tho
>>
Not OP, but does anyone have any experience shooting supersonic rounds through a suppressor in .300blk? How does it affect the ballistics vs shooting without a suppressor?
>>
>>30473378
Suppressors will add a few feet per second and maybe change POI by a small margin

That's it
>>
>>30473378
Never chrono'd mine, but expect to pick up a few fps over unsuppressed. Not enough to be meaningful though. For many calibers it is similar to the gains experienced from having an extra inch of barrel.
>>
>>30473405
>>30473418

Thanks. I had the opportunity to shoot a .300blk last weekend and everything went well at 100yds, but at 200yds we (me and my buddy who owned it) couldn't get the rounds to impact where we wanted. I was just wondering if it was operator error, wrong adjustments on the optic, or if the suppressor had an effect on the ballistics.
>>
>>30473128
>but it's roughly twice as expensive as .223/5.56

You don't know the secret huh
>>
>>30473485
With subs it takes me like 11 mils from a 50y zero to get out to 250y (range goes 50, 100, 250) which is a whole lot of come up. Similar to spinning up to get a .308 to 1k yards from a 100y zero.
>>
>>30473579
Yeah he had a ballistics chart and we were rather surprised at the large adjustments it had for the ranges we were shooting. It was probably a combination of shooter error and the adjustments being off.
>>
>>30473579
>>30473675
Although we weren't using subsonic rounds
>>
>>30473545
I know I could always get into reloading it
>>
>>30473076
It is a rifle bullet that can't go through iiia unless it is supersonic. If you use supersonic ammo it would mitigate how quiet it is while suppressed. So, then you might as well use 5.56.
>>
>>30473683
I just shoot subs so I don't have any experience there, but supers shouldn't be crazy at 200y, I'd imagine just a mild or 12 o clock hold would be enough for torso steel.
>>
>>30473718
Well we tried multiple aiming points to hit the target, but none of them seemed to work. Ah well, just chalk it up to a bad day. Both of us are fairly new to the caliber, optic, and suppressor (my first time using all three, although he's taken deer with his setup) so I guess it's just something he'll figure out with more range time.
>>
>>30473162
Meme caliber? It has it's place and in a short barrel it is leaps and bounds better than a 223. 300 blk in a 10" barrel produces ~1250ft/lbs of ME. 556 from a 10" gets you 850ft/lbs.

300blk bullet weight 110-245gr
223/556 bullet weight 45-77gr

Yeah, the 300 is worthless...
>>
>>30473699
Advantage is its supersonic performance out of such a short barrel and noise level compared to 5.56 out of a similar barrel length
>>
Long ass path to produce similar ballistics that an old combloc round can produce for 24 cents per bang.
>>
>>30474239
Except 7.62x39 has none of the advantages of 300 Blackout aside from cost
>>
>>30474239
>>30474465
By reloading I can get .300 BLK down to 35ยข/rd. using OTM bullets. They both look and shoot better then any combloc. I can also enjoy my hobby on rainy days and load up enough for several trips to the range.
>>
>>30473076
I enjoy it. Just started reloading it yesterday for about $.40 a round vs the $.75+ factory new rounds. Testing them today.
>>
>>30477173
>>30476729
Do you trim your own .223/5.56 brass down or do you buy .300 blackout casings?
>>
>>30473699
5.56 + 9" bbl + silencer = RIP

>>30473076
I like mine. But yeah it's fucking expensive to shoot and I will probably only use it to hunt.
>>
>>30473076
I'm kinda in the same boat as you, OP. I want to buy a silencer and SBR a lower before the new 41f regulations go into effect. I was thinking about going with the 9" BCM barrel, but Faxon has 10" barrels for considerably less. I'd rather have the 9" though, because I'd want it to be as short as possible without being unsafe.
>>
I'm not convinced .300 is so much better than .45 that it justifies the investment of $$$

Go with a Kriss, or even a CX4 Storm in .45
>>
>>30477948
>Cx4 Storm
Nice gun and nice caliber, but nearly any pistol caliber will be incomparable to .300 BLK.

>Kriss
That design has been shown to be a) worthless without an automatic firing mode (the recoil mechanism just offsets the shooter's aim in semi-auto), and b) W O B B L Y. An interesting design wasted as a civilian weapon.
>>
meme caliber...moving on.
>>
>>30477726
I trim LC brass to .300 BLK
>>
>>30473128
I have an 8.5" that I eventually plant to suppress.

Round cost lead me into reloading so it's a win win
>>
>>30478356
Are you using a jig?

Mind posting a quick rundown of your equip/process?
>>
>>30477862
Apparently AAC says 300 Blackout was designed for a 9" barrel so I'm inclined to go that route like you. Having a barrel that tiny with good performance is pretty neat

> de-prime fired cases using Lee hand press and universal de-priming die
> clean de-primed cases in Lyman Ultrasonic cleaner (water or vinegar+water); repeat until primer pockets clean
> rinse cases in water with a little sodium bicarbonate
> toss in Lyman tumbler with Zilla Lizard Litter to polish and dry
> swage cleaned cases' primer pockets with RCBS primer pocket swager die in RCBS Rock Chucker
> cut cases with Squirrel Daddy jig mounted on a hazard fraught chop saw
> chamfer and de-bur cases using Lyman Case Prep Center
> lube with Liquid Lanolin and IsoHEET mixture
> initial sizing with Lee 300 BLK full length sizing die in RCBS Rock Chucker (I run each case up twice)
> trim to 1.360" with an RCBS Trim Pro fixed with a DeWalt Drive
> chamfer and de-bur cases (again) using Lyman Case Prep Center
> check case length with Mitutoyo Absolute Digital Caliper
> check case size with LE Wilson 300 BLK case gauge
> resize and re-trim (or toss) any that fail the check
> clean brass once more using the Zilla Lizard Litter with NuFinish for final polish
> equip Nitrile gloves
> prime cases with RCBS priming tool. CCI 450, CCI #41
> seal seated primers with liquid lacquer
> charge cases with RCBS Chargemaster 1500. H110, Lil'Gun
> seat bullets with Lee 300 BLK bullet seating die in RCBS Rock Chucker, Speer TNT 125gr, Sierra 2120, Sierra 2121
> crimp assembled cases with Lee 300 BLK FCD in RCBS Rock Chucker
> wipe cases down with Kleenex Viva paper towels (I h8 finger prints and brown bullets)
> place shiny new rounds in Ziploc 1gal plastic bags written with date, powder, charge, primer, bullet, COAL
> store in MTM ammo can/crate, Plano ammo can, Blackhawk or Surplus 50cal ammo can with rechargeable silica gel desiccant pack
> wait for range day, or SHTF, which ever comes first

some of these steps are optional

Just finished my build, think I need a new ejector spring though. Fucker keeps slipping off supersonic rounds halfway through extraction, causing the spent cast to be squashed by the fresh round trying to chamber
>>
>>30479414
> extractor spring

maybe an o-ring?
>>
I prefer it over 5.56, but buying built ammo is a good bit more expensive. I think the .300 is the meme caliber that will actually stick.
The 110 grn TAC-TX bullets are sweet and make it a good choice for deer out to a few hundred yards if you are up to it.
It's a pretty quiet round even without a suppressor, which may really come into play in an HD scenario.
>>
>>30479414
Overgassed? Rough chamber?
Should be able to function without the O-ring ideally.
>>
>>30477726
I just reuse the hundreds of brass I've saved over the past year and a half of shooting and check for cracks or pressure issues. Made a nice 130gr SP batch last night and tested it today. 18.7gr lil'gun with cci small rifle magnum primers out of a 16.5" AR with 1:8 twist. Gave me a nice ~2in group from 50yds with a cheap red dot and clean holes in the paper.
>>
>>30479502
I dunno, it works fine with subs and suppressed... I'll check out the chamber
>>
>>30479252
Thank you!

I should also add, if you use cases other than Lake City brass, you should also check neck thickness with a caliper. Anything less than .013" is OK. Larger is NOGO.

Pretty much any US made brass is OK, but a lot of foreign brass can be too thick.

Because of this, I also check the completed rounds in the case gauge when using new head stamp brass if my measuring shows the neck thickness to be borderline. I also periodically check my LC brass rounds to ensure I don't get any anomalies. If I start getting completed rounds fail to drop in and drop free from the case gauge, I stop using that head stamp.

I know that if you get your calibers confused you will blow your god damned hands off
>>
>>30481645
>if you use the wrong ammo in your gun bad things will happen

It's just like shooting 5.56 in a .223 caliber weapon. Don't be a retard and you'll be fine
>>
>>30481645
> use PMags for 5.56 and Hexmags for 300 BLK
> color code magazines
> shoot only one gun at a time and pack ammo up before switching

It's pretty easy to avoid that problem.
>>
>>30481742
>It's just like shooting 5.56 in a .223 caliber weapon.

That can be debated, .300 people dont really have a chance, but 5.56 in 223 you might not find out that you fucked up on the first few rounds fired
>>
>>30481742
>>30481764
Just because people have the ability to not be retarded doesn't mean they won't be retarded anyways
>>
>>30481799
then they deserve their Darwin Award
