N-pap are alright rifles, rob ski does a video demonstrating some qc issues with the earlier ones. I don't know if they are still plagued by these faults.
>wasr is better imo except finish
>>
>>30465504
Not him, but I think I can explain.

The things the WASR has over an NPAP is aftermarket and a chrome lined CHF barrel. If you're wanting to slap shit on your AK, then the WASR is by far the better by. The barrel is a great bonus. This isn't to say the NPAP is bad or anything, it's just not nearly as customizable. The barrel also isn't bad, it just objectively has a shorter life span.

Some will say the NPAP has better 'fit and finish', but that's really just a meme these days more than anything else. It and the WASR are both solidly built AKs that will always go bang, at an attractive pricepoint.
>>
>>30465504
Yep, it's actually of a noticeably lower quality than the WASR. Also, non-chromed lined barrel, clean it religiously or it will turn into rust in no time.
>>
>>30465515

>>
>>30465582

that would be way too expensive

basically what you do is you look for the lowest price for a brick or two of ammo and then you shoot that

He did, but the OPAP is better
>>
>>30465598
Golden tiger is the best though. 22 CPR and made well
>>
>>30465590
I actually own one and I never said he didn't make a solid choice. The things I said about the NPAP are not deniable. It doesn't have the customization of a WASR, and its barrel isn't chrome lined. Nor is its fit and finish appreciably superior. This does not, for the second time, make it a poor choice. So, if you'd actually bother to read my post before sperging out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
>>
>>30465582
>I clean after every shoot and if I don't use them in a month I clean them.
Yep, that's about right. If you would have bought a WASR you could have forgot to clean it completely or just piss on it from time to time.
>>30465590
>Dude who bought the NPAP made a solid choice.

Ignore WASRfags. These are the same people who will try to convince you that a WASR is on par with an Arsenal. NPAP is the new reigning king for a budget AK. Just clean it everytime you shoot it if you want to take care of it. If not, it's fine. Your barrel won't turn to rust instantly and fall off, contrary to the memes.

Also, you can feed it the dirtiest, cheapest 7.62x39 you can find, and it'll still ask for more. AKs are hungry whores.
>>

You're a funny guy. Though I liked my M70, I would get a WASR over it if I made the choice again. That being said, the serb AKs aren't bad, they just don't provide any real advantages for the disadvantages they have.
>>
Looking for a good plate carrier to go with my smersh rig. You guys got any personal experience putting plates in Russian carriers and which ones might be suitable?

I was looking at Defender 2, but its like 800$ for a real one. Think I might get a a Zsh-1 helmet, too.

Final question, has anyone ever had any trouble with grey-shop? I had to make an exchange, but there system was not working. Sergey said to just send it back and they'll swap it out anyway. That was over a month ago when I sent it back. The suit reached them around 6-14, but he is saying they haven't received it yet (and consequently, I haven't received my exchange or any refund). WTF is going on?

If you go for 6b43/45/46 size 2 it will fit m-sapis for sure.
Defenders have shit-tier two-piece steel plates angled at your face. Would not recommend other than for aesthetic jerking.

I just stopped at a gun store on my way out of town and they had an Izhmash Saiga in .308, asking $1200 for it. I'm interested, but not really familiar with AKs. Is this a decent price for one in good condition? I'm going back tomorrow to have a better look, but want to get opinions on whether I'd be wasting my time or not. Any advice?
>>
>>30466349
The only reason to pay that much for a 308 semi auto is because you are a collector and desperately want a "banned" saiga in your collection.
Here's a quick google search and likely a much better rifle for $400 less.

So just ordered an SLR-104FR-31 this morning.

Feel pretty good about it, but I'm going to be replacing the furniture with wood and replacing the buttstock with a triangle stock.

Gun itself came out to $1096, and if I am in fact to replace the furniture, I'd be getting the furniture as well as the buttstock online, and that's an extra $228 including shipping, putting me at a total of $1324.

I don't know why, but I feel kinda reluctant about it. I mean, I really, really want to replace that furniture, but the expense of it all, it's the same as if I would have just gotten a SAM7 instead. Couple in the cost of the mags and ammo as well, I'm looking at about $1500.

I mean, I can afford it, but it just goes out of my comfortable price range. I dunno, guess I'm just hoping somebody validates my purchase so I don't feel so guilty about it.

Am I just being retarded, or are these feelings normal?
>>
>>30466562
Just the way it is with customized rifles. Honestly 1.5-2k is about par to have a nicely done AK with a little pile of ammo.

5.45 vs 7.62 debatable, but I had a SAM7 and sold it off eventually. I don't really regret it.
>I have a 107CR I've been fucking with that I wouldn't care to add up what I've put into it. I need to sell and recoup some of it kek
>>
>>30466640
Unfortunately, yeah. On the brighter side though, it is an Arsenal, so I know that I'm practically guaranteed quality which I guess ultimately makes it worth it.

I would have preferred a 107FR, but hey, can't find those anywhere. They seem to be totally dried up. It would have been nice too because then my brother and I could have shared the 7.62 with his SKS I got him a while back.

Oh well.
>>
>>30466483
Thanks, I'll do some more research. I know that they are "banned", but not sure if it's really worth it for my first AK.

Before you even consider buying furniture start buying a nice supply of magazines. At ~$30-$40 a piece for solid surplus mags (don't even bother with any of the cheap Tapco/Magpul/commercial Bulgarian mags) you're looking at around $400 just for 10 to 12 mags.

You can make the rifle look as cool and pretty as you like but that won't mean anything if you don't even have any quality magazines.
>>
>>30465630
you don't
the only surplus available these days is Yugo brass cased corrosive, which is actually pretty nice

you're also unlikely to ever wear out your barrel, so the chrome lining (or lack thereof) is probably moot for you, but may not be moot for your grandkids

also, throwing it out there that there is a lot of yugo specific stuff on the market these days

personally, I wouldn't buy an N-PAP
if I'm going to deal with the diminished aftermarket and lack of chrome lining, I want a big honking rifle with a thick honking receiver, which means O-PAP or parts kit M70 (or Two River Arms Tabuk)
>>
>>30466744
Well, the furniture is on gunbroker and it won't be there forever. The mags I presume will be available much longer.

On the priority scale, I weigh the furniture a little heavier. And I don't need all the fancy "tacticool" crap, I figure some decent quality steel mags will suffice. I'll be getting a few mags as soon as the gun arrives at the FFL.

>buying furniture on gunbroker
Don't unless it's super rare or else you're gonna be severely over spending. Wood 74 furniture requently sells for anywhere from $35 to $70 depending on country of origin on the Files.

Mags should never be more important than furniture. Mags can be banned from import or named because of their capacity, furniture cannot.

>quality steel mags
For a 104/5.45, the only quality steel mags you're going to find for a decent price are Tantal mags which are still going to be about $40. You're very limited with 5.45 mags. Outside of rare mags you're going to be looking at steel Tantals, polymer Russians and Bulgarians, and Bakelite Russians and East Germans, ALL of which are going to be $30 to $40. There's no skimping out with mags with 5.45, and they're only going to keep going up in price. East German bakes used to be less than random surplus steel 7.62x39 mags, and now they're more than double the price.
>>
>>30466894
Well, the grip, hand guard and upper guard are one set and in mint condition, Polish apparently

http://www.gunbroker.com/Item/568221989

and the triangle stock (sold by the same guy) is also new Russian

www.gunbroker.com/item/564687141

I want to say that these are actually decent prices compared to the other listings I've seen, but I've never bought this stuff before so I don't know what's fair and fair.
>>
>>30466795
... Did you do any research whatsoever on 5.45x39 mags or AK74s in general before buying and SLR104?
>>
>>30466953
Yes, I've been doing tons of research, on the guns themselves at least, not the mags.

I've been in at least 5 of these threads now asking questions and gathering info, as well as scouring forums for other opinions. Like I said earlier, I would have preferred a 107, but there doesn't seem to be any, so I was fine with getting a 104.

And besides, I'm not claiming to know everything, I'm learning and still learning and I want to make sure that my first AK is a good quality AK

Those mags are all steel reinforced, you will not break them without trying to do so.
>>
>>30467103
>So what's the argument for polymer as opposed to steel?
90% on the countries that made 5.45 rifles made polymer mags so that is what is available.
>Less chance of damage?
They're about even. Surplus plumber mags are damn near indestructible.

Circle 10 mags are Bulgarian military mags and are fantastic if kind of pricey. Buy surplus circle 10s over new ones to save money.

Ok. I feel a little bad ordering online though. I want to support my LGS by buying the mags and other accessories there, but fuck, I guess if it's cheaper...

Also, how's this for the furniture? Bulgarian "good" condition full set, $50. Only thing I can see is that the stock wouldn't fit, since the 104 is a folder and I'd have to replace the trunnion and backplate, but still cheaper than the other.

>>
>>30467241
Ok so I don't need 10-12 of them right now this instant, I can probably get away with 4 for now, the rest later, and the thing is I'm just not really fond of polymer furniture on an AK. I'm sure the Arsenal furniture is great, but it's just my personal preference that I really don't like the polymer furniture, which is primarily the reason why I'm kinda insistent on the wood furniture. I should be able to get both, I have just over $200 left to spend after the gun purchase, so I should be able to get the mags and furniture if I partition right.

>>

Right. I'm fairly sure that with Atlantic being fuck busy and all, I don't expect my AK to come until the latter part of the month and by then I'll have been paid again.

Also just ordered 5 mags. Guess I will just hold off on the furniture, as uneasy as that makes me feel.

It's just something about Polymer on an AK that doesn't sit right with me.

Different anon, just curious, what are the failures of p-mags and is it the same situation for 47M's?
I haven't built one yet, but I want to make sure I get durable mags for decent field and range use when I build mine.
Still trying to decide whether to build a 47M or 74. Biggest thing to me between them is availability and cost of ammunition between 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 in the US

>47M
You mean AKM? No such thing as a 47M.

The commercial mags don't have metal reinforced feed lips and locking lugs, the two parts of the mag that receive the most stress and take the brunt of all force on them, and plastic feed lips and locking lugs break incredibly easy.

They're fine for casual use like bench shooting but literal normal use kills them over time. Just the act of inserting them in the rifle wears the locking lugs and causes them to break, and the mere stress of the follower pushing rounds against the feed lips (aka normal fucking magazine use) causes them to crack.

I seriously don't understand why US manufactures can't seem to get the simple idea of metal reinforced lugs and lips into their thick skulls.
>>
>>30467071
they're not really that bad
if you drop your rifle from shoulder height directly on the magazine, you could very well lose a locking lug
they function great and are durable otherwise

if you get the Gen M3 mags, then you're golden as they have metal reinforcing on the lugs
>>
>>30467594
That's been the AR for a while now. The days of cheap AKs are long gone while ARs are dirt cheap right now. I remember when I could go to my LGS and pick up WASRs for less than $400 whereas now they're pushing $700. With a budget of $500 you can get leagues farther in the AR world that in the AK world.
>>
>>30465620

My Npap is my most accurate AK with good ammo, even more then my arsenal.

Just couldn't get past the cheap finish, non mil spec receiver and barrel on the Wasr.

Romania is not known for making quality weapons and ammunition.
>>
>>30467720
But not the feed lips which like >>30467696 said will crack and break under normal use which isn't acceptable in my book. I'd rather buy a $35 surplus mag that will outlive me than buy two Magpul mags that will just break after a year or so.

If Magpul ever pulled their heads out of their asses and reinforced the lips then they could easily gain control of the 74 mag market in the US, but knowing them they'd still probably charge just as much as normal old surplus mags which would lose the appeal of US produced mags for 90% of buyers.

That's how it works, people mostly go out of their way because something didnt work for them. Also, 100 dollars more? They are 800, just as the c39v2 is. There have been plenty of threads complaning about c39v2 cants and bad finishes as well. On top of that they still don't have side rails for optics unless you get century's trash proprietary side rail that only accepts their mounts. It's not a genuine ak, I'm glad that they are trying something new but it's just not a very good direction they are taking with it.
>>
>>30470738
For $800 though you're better off saving up an additional $200-$300 for an SLR107 or even finding a MAK90 or Maadi and having a better rifle in every sense of the word

The $800 mark is a weird place for AKs, currently. Either save a little more for a better rifle or buy something a little cheaper (WASR, Yugo) and save money on a rifle that will still be just as solid but cost less so more ammo and mags.

Billet bolt and front trunnion are the bare minimum acceptable standards. Commie shit is made from forgings.

DDI is who I am most optimistic about. They are working on making a fully US made AK with a traditional cross-compatible 4.5mm folding rear trunnion and triangle stock, plus forged steel parts where it counts (pic related).

Everything in this pic is US made according to DDI. They did a really good job cloning the stock, it's almost indistinguishable in this pic but the small details do give it away.

i did this 6 years ago and to my knowledge at the time no one else had and havent seen another since but i bet it has to have happened now

those arent rivets they are bolts and jb weld which surprising ive built two aks after and have been waiting for it to break so i can fix it properly
>>
So is shit ordered from places like Atlantic Firearms new? I know they import and take them apart before doing so to bypass laws but prior to that were the weapons used or are they out of the factory?
Like the npaps are they new or used?
Have they seen some shit?
>>
>>30472913
JB Weld don't fuck around

I think I have a vague memory of you posting that on /k/ a while back before /akg/ was even a thing
>>
>>30472956
yeah people got mad when i angle ground off my side optic attachment thing which i forget the name off now

ive thrown my ak off and at so much shit and used the rear trunion as a hammer so i thought i would have killed it alread plus however many thousands of round ive put into it by now

What's the consensus on TGI 74's?

Nice rifle.
>>
>>30469181
Cool. I'm gonna keep looking into those AR500 plates. Might grab a 6B43 or 6B46. The 46 is much cheaper, but I don't think it has a neck piece (which I'm not sure if I can get protective pieces for that part anyway) and I don't think it can attach shoulders or groin pad (which I'm also not sure I can find armor for).

I'm also looking into one of the latest gen Kobras for my AK. I hear mixed reviews on them, but this newest gen seems pretty good and I love that I'm not just stuck with a dot, but can change my sight picture.

how long until a gunbroker seller will answer emails on average? my 1st time buying online
>>
>>30473672
Depends on the seller obviously. If they give a damn, same day within a few hours. If they don't, it could be Tuesday after the holiday weekend.
>>
>>30473562
45 has the neck piece, it's pretty nice but if you don't want a full neck then go with a 46
>>
>>30464621
Nice chest rig, have the same one.

>Running around in 40lbs of scrap steel you bought for 30000x more than what its worth
>doesn't know regularold m193 will go thru it like butter out to 25yds, and m855a1 to 100yds+
why not waste your money elsewhere?
>>
>>30473919
Exactly. I've seen ceramic going for a just a little bit more.

As in a side rail or dust cover rail?

If side rail, RS Products

AR 500's lvl 3 will stop green tips
>>
>>30474145

M885 is no where close to AP, level 3 is designed to stop rifle rounds.
>>
>>30474183
>>30474145
Notice he said M855A1 ?

M855A1 is pretty cool shit, some youtubers got their hands on some to review. Can't wait until we get it too, that base that just penetrates through, and the jacket separates and fragments.

Beautiful stuff.
>>
>>30471629
AMD-65, like $520 at some webstores (not including shipping and if you have sales tax) but it has some downsides though.
>>
>>30474203

Point it out for me where he says "m855a1 In the following statement.

"AR 500's lvl 3 will stop green tips"
>>
>>30474203
How are civilians going to get ammo with a hardened steel penetrator?
>>
>>30474145
I didnt say 'green-tipz' you inbred fuck. Im talkin about VIETFUCKINNAM ammo. the original M193 55gr @3250fps, and the new "GREEN n ECOFRIENDLY" $1.5billion dollar round that is now standard issue, and will turn your scrap metal into swiss cheese at quite a distance.

how bout you edujamacate yourself before you go buying overpriced tin?
>>
>>30473919
>>30474203
My mistake, just looked it up
Neat! If there's a habbeding I just gotta hope I run into Jamal and paco shooting shit ammo at me chest and not bubba and his m855a1
>>
>>30474304
Over priced steel my man
And I'd honestly rather take my chances having it and count on being shot by something it could stop over not having shit and getting new holes in my be just about anything that comes my way

Honestly I've got no plan; I'd like something either dark brown or Russian read, probably with a shellac finish.
>>

Even the RAS47 survived being driven over the first time they reviewed one.
>>
>>30474927
The truck bit wasn't even the distressing part. That one drop causing so much shit to go wrong (loose trigger pins, loss of retaining clip, bent receiver) is terrifying.
>>
Took the m4 stock of my WASR. I'm considering selling it and trying to hunt down a Beryl or another SLR-106 before they get too hard to find or stupid expensive. If nobody wants it I'll pull the zhukov off and put all wood back on with some paki tape and make it a beater.
