I doubt there are many who would use a little .223 for self-defense, especially when shotguns are widely available. There's several semi-automatic shotguns out there that provide much, much more at close range than a comparable rifle. Remind him that five high-brass shotgun slugs being fired out of an AK-style shotgun is absolutely an option here.
