I'm looking for some lever-action enthusiasts who can help me. I'm torn between the Uberti 1873 and the Henry Big Boy for cowboy action shooting and between the Marlin Guide Gun and Henry .45-70 for grizzly bear hunting. What do I do? My wife is trying desperately to push our first child out of her uterus and this is all I can think about.
>>
Go for Henry rifle always.

They have the highest quality in their built designed and the best part is that they are handmade which you can trust to know that it isn't just halfassed by a machine.

Yeah it doesn't have a side loading gate but the strong built design and the fact it will always go bang when you pull the trigger makes up for this.

Trust me on this friend.
>>
>>30443350
I wouldn't get a Henry .45-70. They have this special snowflake front tube loading method loading instead of having a loading gate.
>>

>solved
>>
I appreciate the input. I've always liked the loading gate as opposed to the top-loader tube. But y'all are saying the top-loader is better?
>>
I'd recommend against the Henry if only because of the magazine loading process. I've shot a Marlin .45-70 and it was one of the best things I've ever shot. The guy had just got it and it was a tack driver right out of the box.
>>
>>30443405
Brilliant. A bear pelt blanket is certainly in order.
>>
>>30443379
>>30443383
Sorry, I misread your reply. I agree the top-loader is the only thing I don't like about the Henrys.

I have one of those on the way. I can't wait to shoot it either. Is that a 336?
>>
>>30443694
Yup, I went to the hardware store to see what they had and I got to fondle this guy for a bit and fell in love. Bought it and two boxes of ammo same day.

Get your babby a .38 special levergun. .22s are for premies.

I have an Uberti 1866 yellowboy, and the fit and finish is 2nd to none. It's the biggest of the 1866 series rifles, so while I could use it in SASS competitions, I would rather have a handier carbine. I mostly bought it for looks and range fun.

Henry's are nice, and my father in law has a 357 Big Boy. It's good for SASS, but the Uberti just has a better blue, wood, and action.

Marlins have been good, and a 45-70 is really cool. I had a guide gun in 444, bjut I barely shot it, and eventually let it go. Overall, a pistol caliber levergun is more fun at the range in my experience.
>>
Just got a marlin 45-70 a little bit ago from grabagun; was a 2016 manufacture date and it is a hell of a lot of fun. The only bad thing I can say is the loading gate/door needs some deburring so it doesn't take your goddamn finger off, but it's great other than that.
>>
>>30444696
My Uberti revolvers are awesome, so I imagine their rifles and carbines are just as good. Thanks for the input.
>>
>>30444872
I've yet to hear anything seriously wrong with Marlins.

Get a Winchester 1892 chambered in .357 mag to go with your .357 mag. Then become John Wayne. So easy
>>
What would be the best Henry for whitetail hunting?
>>
>>30443350
>My wife is trying desperately to push our first child out

you're not going to be able to afford to shoot .45-70 because you have to save for your little crotch fruit's college

also, consider .45-120 sharps
>>
>>30446832
The 30-30 is pretty much the most popular white tail cartridge ever, so I'd say one of those.
>>
>>30446852
As long as I'm in the Navy, I'll get a raise at least every two years, so I'll just split it between ammo and the crotch fruit college fund. Or she can be a good kid and pay for her own college like I did.
>>
I've personally had bad experiences with Henry rifles. Frame cracks, stress fractures, poor machining, etc.

If I could, I'd choose a Cimarron, Uberti, or Pedersoli.

Alternatively a JM-proofed Marlin.
>>
>>30443350
I like the Marlins,

especially pre-Remington ownership.

Not always a huge fan of stock sights.
Skinner sights make a nice upgrade.
Can scope one, but I think it looks wrong.

Thumb extender for hammer is a nice little thing to have as well.

I have Marlin levers is .30/30 and .45-70

Will be adding a .35 rem too, because I want to be a special snowflake.
>>
>>30447122
>>30446975
Post 2012 marlins (remlins) are pretty nice and aren't total fuck ups.

Cast and reload for cheap ammo, use trail boss for even cheaper practice ammo.
>>
>>30447168
Cool, I haven't bought one built after 2012, nice to know they got their QC back on track.
>>
>>30446891

Why is it the most popular?
>>
>>30447284
Partially at least due to the popularity of Winchester and Marlin lever actions.

The Winchester Model 94 and Marlin levers are two of the most popular sellers of all time. Grandad, great Grandad etc bought many a .30/30 lever, and they have been handed down and used for decades now.

.30/30 loads from 150 grain to 175 are just about perfect for whitetail, black bear, and other popular game throughout the U.S. Lots of good factory ammo at good prices, and it is stocked everywhere.

The .30/30 levers are just light, easy to point, easy to carry in the brush rifles with a decently quick follow up shot if you need it.

East of the Mississippi--New England, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest etc. they are the cats meow for whitetail hunting in the forests and river bottoms.

Range isn't some 500 yard monster, it is best from about 200 in, but that is where most hunting takes place. Unless you are out West where you need a flatter longer shooter.

gay or nah? still on the hunt for a first gun and im thinking 30-30, 357, or 44
>>
>>30447122
I shot my first hog with my dad's special snowflake Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. It's a fine rifle, but a weird cartridge.
>>
>>30447711
It's in the eye of the beholder, but:

For me, gay as rainbow flag.
I'll stick with a walnut stock, but I am Fudd.

.30/30 for killing dinner
the others if you want to get a revolver too.
>>
>>30446975
Do they make decent large caliber rifles or just pistol carbines?
>>
marlin is perfectly fine if you can examine the gun in person
>>
>>30447787
Agreed.
>>
>>30447711
I always prefer wood stocks and grips on old-fashioned guns like lever-actions, but that's just my preference. Polymer or other synthetics do have the advantage of being lighter and sometimes more durable though.
>>
>>30447770
I was looking at it for hogs. Was gonna cast my own 200 grains and just have a weird cartridge to fart around with and kill critters with handloads.
>>
>>30447787
>>30447853
i'm autistic, i want all my guns to be a similar color and look good together. 30/30 is probably the best choice. You guys know the best side loading 30/30 that i wont feel bad about ruining with a cerakote and rubber?
>>
>>30448013
If you gotta do it just pick up an old beater Marlin or Winchester, Winchester is a top ejector, Marlin is a side ejector. Take your pick.

Probably get a decent deal on either used at a gun store/pawn shop.
>>
>>30448055
Would ~$500 be acceptable for new in CA? I'll look around for used. I used to hunt with a winchester and that might get passed down to me. i couldnt bear to ruin that so i'll look for a marlin. Thanks for the help
>>
>>30448131
Yeah they usually run 450-500 at big box stores new.

You use to be able to get them at Wally World for a little less

I live in Fucknowhere, Wyoming so I can't confirm, I never go to Walmart.

If you want to go full frontiersman, go for 45-70. I know people have been skeptical of Marlin ever since they were bought out, but most reviews I've seen of the various guide guns have all been REALLY positive. I'm actually looking at getting an 1895GBL after I come home from visiting my girlfriend in about a week, as I want to make it my hog-slayer. I personally would rather have the marlin because 1) I prefer the loading gate to the tubular magazine and 2), Henry rifles just LOOK so damn pretty that I know I would never actually take one any place rougher than an outdoor range.

At the end of the day, you should absolutely follow your gut, but those are my own personal 2 cents.
>>
>>30447787
Oh god I want so badly to walk into elk country with a guide gun in my hands, a BFR on my hip, and a bandolier full of 45-70. My diamond would be dicks and also vice-versa
>>
Anything good for $500 and under in 38 special/ 357 magnum?
Would like to be able to share ammo between my pistol and a rifle.
>>
>>30448444
I'm a Wyoming guy, so let me bust the myth for you.

You will walk in elk country, then you will walk, and walk some more. Then you will walk some more. The walks are all uphill, even when they are downgrade.

Day 1, you will care about your guns.
Day 2, you will care about your feet.
Day 3, you will care about your feet and knees.
Day 4, you will care about your feet and knees and lungs.

Diamonds and dicks will wait until its over.

But it is all worth it.
>>
>>30448496
You may be able to Find a Rossi 92 for about $500 is .357, maybe a tad more.
>>
>>30448532
That's kind of in line with what I've heard. But I'm used to hog-stalking in Texas in the summer, so I'm pretty okay with my body hating me.

And you're right when you say it's all worth it. I got to drive through Wyoming and Montana about a year ago, and I've been lusting after a backpacking/hunting trip in that area ever since. Hands down some of the most gorgeous land I've ever seen.
>>
>>30448651
If your are in decent hiking shape, you will be OK. Most guys don't bother and being out of shape and the elevation change just hurts them too much. If you are totally sucking ass the whole time your shooting tends to suffer.

You can pull a cow tag pretty easy and come just enjoy the country and go home with a freezer full of meat. You don't have to play the western big bull tag game if you don't want to.

Pronghorn tags are simple to get, this won't get you up in God's country, but you can still get near and have a nice cheap hunt and go see some nice areas.

Sheep, forget about it. That is a rich mans game now.

I live here, I lust about Alaska. I'm trying to get up there for caribou or sitka.
>>
>>30443379
Boy you're really buying into the advertising aren't ya. No mention of the MIM parts or plated receivers. You say it like they do everything by hand instead of just the finish work

If you want to use that speach again use it on a Miroku Browning
>>
>>30443379
>handmade which you can trust to know that it isn't just halfassed by a machine.

machines dont half-ass anything. only people do that.
>>
>>30445606
They used to be pretty fucked up due to Freedom Group chicanery.

In recent years they've begun to unpick themselves and go back to being the classic working man's rifle they used to be. Get an old one (early 90s or younger, preferably) or a really new one.
>>
I'd figure I would ask here because fuck making my own thread

Is Henry's 22lr pump the best choice for me to buy new?
I seem to find Henry and Remingtons and i almost can't believe that's all there is new.
>>
>>30448575
Thanks! Always had a thing for lever actions, but none of the local shops sell any so I'd have to order.
>>
>>30449112

.30-30 was the first commercial cartridge in the U.S. successfully made with smokeless powder and put in a rifle designed for those pressures. Being the first using a revolutionary new technology is going to endear you to some folks.

Also, Winchester. They've been kind of a big deal in the U.S. firearms community a few times in history. Anything they popularize is prolly gonna catch on.
>>
>>30443609
I too recently got a 336. I love it. Great gun to have if shit hits the fan. Decently sized round and terminal velocity is crazy.
