What, in your opinion, is the best general purpose rifle round? I think the 45-70 is a strong contender.

.308 is the answer. Manageable recoil, most common full size rifle chambering in the world, can kill a boar in one shot, penetrates hard armor fairly frequently, good range, and good ballistic properties.

45-70 has terrible recoil and piss poor ballistics. 30-06 can kill anything from ground squirrels to grizzly bears, and has moderate recoil. 270 is almost as powerful and shoots flatter.

As much as I love the 45-70 either this or 30-06. The op choice while fun powerful and easy to reload is limited to range and availability at times. For North America 308/30-06 will do basically anything needed for hunting and is easy(ish) to find
