What was common and typical in the Waffen-SS was high casualties and equipment losses in battle. For better or for worse, they did not like to retreat or let up from attacks.
You cannot judge an entire branch when there's a huge range between its members: men like Otto Skorzeny or absolute scum like Oskar Dirlewanger wore the same uniform but represented two very different things.

Mostly the later, and German would have been better off not having them.
SS formations overall had higher casualties than Heer units, but were usually better supplied/prioritized with new equipment due to their political standings.
This meant that the SS was depriving Heer units of badly needed equipment, losing that equipment, then squandering even more.
Case in point, the 6th Panzer Army was created out of the most senior SS Panzer divisions on the Western Front. It was lavishly equipped with Panthers and Tiger 2's, and failed to make an effective breakthrough during the Battle of the Bulge. The 6th Panzer army advanced about 20 miles before their advance was halted. A month later, 90% of the heavy equipment given to the Panzer army was lost when they were abandoned to escape encirclement.

Remembered this journal of a Dutch guy who joined the SS and fought in Warsaw Uprising, among other places. He told very interesting stories..

This is what I've read. The best gear being distributed to relatively green SS troops who, because of inexperience and fanaticism, promptly lost it. All while veteran units struggled with dated/broken equipment and poor supply.
Similar excuses Peiper gave for the massacres at Büllingen and Malmedy; an expedient made necessary by the inexperienced men in 1st SS Panzer.

Battle of the Bulge is the example I already listed.
The 1st, and 12th SS Panzer divisions got priority for Panther's and Tiger2's before the more experienced and arguably more effective Panzer Lehr Division.
The Panzer Lehr went into Battle of the Bulge with only 70 tanks.
SS equipment favoritism really ramped up after the July plot.
