I feel the disparaging remarks aimed at the ACOG are largely from users who've failed to do their homework or were mislead. The ACOG is a great optic, but as with anything else, it's not perfect and it's greatness is limited to the narrow niche it fills. If you're looking for a low, fixed-powered optic that is supremely durable it's hard to go wrong with the ACOG. I love my 3x and 3.5x ACOGs, but I'm hesitant to recommend an ACOG to anyone who hasn't used one before, or even handled one.

Trijicon makes high quality glass for a high quality fixed power optic. there are better optics out there, but not with the same durability or the same physical size. the Spectre is a rattle trap with a weird mount that doesn't zero properly half the time. You typical Unertl or USO or NF has better glass... at half again more money and double the physical optic size.
I stick with Trijicon for fixed power and use a S&B for hunting. Zeiss has lost quality over the years but is still good. Nikon, March, and some stuff from BelOMO are all good buys. Hensoldt and Swarovski are kinda money sinks... but i have a S&B so i'm not one to talk about "not wasting money".

minimum for a non-safequeen scope should be 3-400 with higher power demanding higher dollar.
if you want a scope that has positive adjustment, clear glass, good reticle, and will be bomb proof.
expect to pay $1k for the lower end on a 1-4 and $2-3k for 12+ magnification.
