Assuming we ever develop synthetic muscle that can respond with force and efficiency that puts drive shaft based locomotion to shame.

Would the new land based weapons rely on artificial legs, like a gekko.

Or something more like a snake with no single complex joint, just a mass of syth-muscle?
>>
>>30392475
Wheels and treads will be better at literally everything so long as real world physics apply. The only use for synthetic muscle will be prosthesis

It's not about locomotion anon, it's about power.
We don't have the means to generate or at least store the power needed to create the locomotion. That's why Boston Dynamic's walking rover dog thing got canned.

If a free energy source like a Iron Man arc reactor suddenly existed we'd have prototype exo suits in literally months. Within a year we'd be retooling all military vehicles. Synthetic muscle fiber be damned, we'll use whatever is the most effective.

The method of locomotion used by snakes and worms is really not that efficient and the only real advantage is that it can coil around things and climb poles that way. A set of arms to go with the legs usually renders that a moot point.

Messed up the design, I think. They shouldn't have the grabber look like a head, make it look weird as hell when it puts it out on the arm, making people freak out. They should have the head about where a dog's head would be, with some sort of sensor package or something, then have the arm look like it's not a part of the main body so people instead think "Oh, the robot dog has a robot arm! That's cute." thus empathizing with the dog more.

Legs are physically, inherently more efficient than snake style winding at high speeds.

At low speeds, ofc, snakes are probably better for 3d motion in rubble, up power-line poles for sniping, etc.

You know all the akas: Hamburger. Spam in a can. Infantry's just another word for cannon fodder where you come from: the important battles are all fought in the wires anyway these days, and they're over in nanoseconds. The last thing you want is to end up in some godforsaken shithole where meat still matters, where you've got to splice yourself into a clanking armored exoskeleton just to keep from getting squashed the moment your boots hit the ground.
>>
>the eternal power problem

Aluminum air and lithium-air batteries are both past the prototype stage and have 5x the density of regular lithium-ion.

On the hydrocarbon front, Liquid Piston flipped a Wankel engine inside-out and is putting out kilowatts with an engine that can fit in your hand.

uhm, anon, if you break a thread or enough wheels, the vehicles tops.

Something made with artificial muscles might be INCREDIBLY more resilient to mobility damage. But it'd be so far in the future I can't really make any predictions.

Though walkers, if made in such a way, would make sense.
>>
>>30392475
If artificial muscles could work like your pic related (and I think one day they certainly will) then maybe if might make since to have AFVs that walked on any number of legs rather than using traditional ICEs of electric motors. That said engine technology and electric motors will only continue to improve, so for heavy vehicles which need good weight distribution it wouldn't make sense to put them on legs.

Also geckos armed with ATGMs would be fucking terrifying.

They have tank armor and can run and jump like a giant pair of legs on steroids, which they are. Since they hunt in packs even if they face up against AT there is generally enough of them to take it out before their pack takes too many losses. They don't really /need/ guns since they can just stab infantry with a robot tongue or stamp on infantry, but you can outfit them with two externally mounted fiddy cal MGs or whatever. Also they moo, but it is a very scary moo and that can help demoralize the enemy.
>>
>>30412962
I can agree on the mooing even though I grew up around cattle hearing a Moo in the distance of an quiet Arab town after a large firefight and seeing things close in from large leaps in a distance and the mooing getting louder started to make nervous as fuck as It didn't seem right. Was made worse by seeing their legs move the way they do after stomping on 3 hadjis and then shooting some while others picked them up and threw them down.

Big Dog literally uses diesel. As for hydraulics it probably give better controll and hydraulics don't need brakes, valves are brakes. Electric actuators need dedicated brakes to stand still without spending energy. SpotMini is full electric.
