I scored my Rossi 92 in .357magnum for just over 400, NIB. It isn't a super refined model, but with a few tweaks, it's a perfectly respectable lever gun.
Savage 99 in .250, love the takedown feature but the barrel has gotten a little bit of play in the threads from years of use

Except with leverguns, Not enough has changed in any of the actions made before smokeless that'll stop you from using black powder. though you'll be under the same limitations someone with an original 1886 or something will be under.

The edges of the loading gate are sharp. File them down, or else you're going to mess up your thumb pushing rounds in. I did...
Basically, look at what some of the CAS guys do to theirs, and you'll see what it needs to be turned into a good entry-level lever gun.

Most lever-actions are relatively complex and fragile, they can't tolerate powerful cartridges and if your link pin breaks rifle no work. Then of course a rifle with a tubular magazine can't use spitzer bullets, they're relegate to SP or at best ballistic tip. Now something like a Savage 99 doesn't have those issues but it's still no better than a bolt-gun, just different.

People still use them for hunting all the time, it just depends where you live. Probably not the best for hunting pronghorn in Wyoming, but ideal for white tail in northern Minnesota.

Marlin 336 is a lot more solid than the ol' Winchester 94. It's a much simpler mechanism where the lever directly pulls the bolt to the rear instead of all the exposed clockwork. Plus the flat-top with tapped screw holes and side eject means it's ready to accept scopes with no effort or adapter brackets.

Leverevolution rounds are also fairly expensive and damn near impossible to reload at home. Meanwhile a revolver-caliber or a fuddyfive-seventy can be reloaded on a stump in the woods with a $30 kit. Video related.

Absolutely love it. Couple downsides are the tube-feeding and it won't be very accurate with a lot of various shells.
These shells have been the most accurate so far.
I really wamt a lever action, but i want it in 38spc/357. The only issue is that leverguns in that configuration usually run 800$+, and fuck that noise. Every are my options?

Henry is a front-loading tube mag which is all kinds of gay.
Marlin is the best 357mag lever gun but they're more expensive.

Yeah, it came stock with the SBL and I mostly got that over the GBL for the stainless (moving to Seattle soon....) and the aperture sights instead of leaf sights. I might put my MRO on there, and I think the rail is intended for those 'long eye relief' scout scopes, though they haven't tickled my fancy yet (too long for just receiver scope rings).

I love the sort of quasi-utilitarian look of modern levergats like these, basic polished stainless finish, matte composite furniture, curved stock with the large loop, and a top rail for easily mounting whatever scope, red dot or other optic you fancy.

I bought a beautiful Chiappa 1891 with a saddle ring. But the fucking lugs and bolt are hopeless. I mean the lugs rattle and move even when the bolt is closed up. I've checked the contact and it's doubtful if one of the lugs is even making contact with the bolt when the gun is fired. I don't even consider it safe.
I don't think they're all like this but I know that some early ones had problems.

The Miroku guns are excellent. Henry is the best US maker of lever guns now IMO.
Marlins seem to be fine now, they aren't as nice as the Henry's but I'm sure they shoot okay.
One good thing about Marlin is that they offer the 336 in .35 Remington, which is a much better cartridge than the .30-30, especially if you reload. You can even use .357 magnum bullets for plinking or varmint loads.

the tube loading has a useful advantage that you can load/unload without cycling them through the action, but i don't see why Henry can't just have a gate as well as the tube. the patent has only been expired for forever. it would be like making a 1911 but setting it up to only reload from a stripper clip.
