I want a semi auto rifle that is dmr levels accurate but also capable of taking down north American game.
I have a psl, fn fal, and m1 garand.
I am wondering if it is more financially sound to modify one if my rifles for the role or simply buy a new rifle that can already perform in the role for me.

Just put a scope on the FAL?
PSL is fun but not nearly as accurate.
Don't touch that Garand.

this

I would agree except the FAL is already heavy and, with the weight of a scope, think about if that's what you want in a hunting rifle.
SCAR-17 or an AR-10 build can get the weight down, maybe even a Keltec RFB or a DesertTech MDR, but it's not going to be easy to get a battle rifle down to hunting weight.

My psl is a damn decent shooter.
I just don't know if I should invest money into such a large rifle.
Fals are incredibly harsh on optics, have shit triggers, heavy, bad barrel harmonics, expensive ammo... etc.
However my fal has history - it's a imbel rhodesian fal.
I really really do not wish to Bubba my m1 especially since the local dealer has m1c/m1ds for sale and I have enough to buy an m1a.
Pic related is my psl that I sighted in yesturday at 50yrds with spam can ammo ( I know not great but for a rifle that is considered a 4-6 moa gun, it's decent )
I would love an mdr or scar 17 (maybe a 20 since they plan on releasing it)
Rfbs are vapor ware. Seems like ar10 might be the thing to do - is 7.62x39, 5.45x45, 5.56/.223 good enough for big game hunting?

What about an mcx?

For reference this was the following 3 shot grp at 50yrds with my fingernail next to it as a scale
You have two battle rifles and a dmr, all of which will take game, but all of them are sorta big and heavy and you don't know what to do?
Buy a fucking savage axis II. The only one that's easy to make smaller is the FAL an it'll be a money pit because accurizing FALs is a bitch

300 blackout isn't great for North American game. Yeah, it'll work, but it's not even the best caliber in the AR-15 platform for larger game.
Lightweight AR-10 builds can be cheap and they'll hit the lower weight limits. DPMS Oracle in .308 is like 8.4 lbs and they managed to do that without really trying. I say go for that, it's doable for under $1k.
Or go bolt. I know it's what OP doesn't want to hear, trust me I'm going through the same shit right now, but a battle rifle for hunting is fucking hard to make light.

I would love an mcx and have been looking intently at one - the only negative I can see is the caliber.

You are correct 100% on accurizing the fal. It is a money pit and a nightmare. I'll look into the savage - I've heard great things about savage, particularly the savage 10 fcp (sadly bolt action )
Not my fal

It seems more and more likely I'll simply go ar 10...
I love the left charging handle and history of the fal.
The ease and reliability of the psl and shooting
The m1 just... gets my dick hard
