>But the right to bear arms is not a call to use them. Gun advocates want to normalize the tools of violence by making happy kids-and-gun videos. But the result is another generation of voters and elected officials who think war is not a horror, but just another test of manhood, a geopolitical game of poker where the actual ramifications of weaponry are never considered.

You might be able to own guns, but you definitely shouldn't be able to use them in any context!

Dear Mr. Kuntzman,

I read your article on AR 15 and was very disappointed in the numerous inaccuracies. First off there is no way that you could have gotten bruised from firing an ar-15 rifle, this can be solved doing simple mathematics. An ar 15 weights around 8 pounds when fully loaded and fires a 69 grain projectile at around 2950 feet per second this generates around 1333foot pounds of energy at the part of the barrel that the bullet is leaving from. Now 1330 foot pounds might sound like a lot of energy that should generate a lot of recoil but using a simple formula conversion website (http://handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp) we see that such a load only generates a recoil impulse of 1.15 pounds a sec, think of this as having some one shove you for one second. Next up we have the free recoil energy in foot pounds, assuming we entered the same data as before we can see that the ar 15 is coming back at you at 4.64 feet a second that is really slower then a soft ball that is being lobbed through the air so that ones child could catch it. Not only that but the recoil energy is dispersed through the entire butt of the rifle which would further reduce the energy imparted therefore preventing a bruise from forming.

So there is my first issue, my second issue is that you describe it as loud and deafening yet you claim to have fired pistols before. Assuming you were firing a 9mm hand gun it would not be unreasonable to expect it to produce anywhere from 100-120 decibels of noise which you might hear as a wet thwump now this is different from the ar-15s 120-130 decibel range and the fact that since the bullet is supersonic you can hear it ring down the range. Which while loud when wearing appropriate ear protection is bearable. My third issue with the writing is the last part in particular “If illegally modified to fully automatic mode, it doesn’t take any imagination to see dozens of bodies falling in front of your barrel.”

To do so one would have to machine mill special parts in the receiver which would indicate, a great understanding of the workings of firearms and how to produce them. In such a scenario as you described the individual already knows how to make the most important part of the gun the lower receiver which means as long as they have access to a lathe and mill they can make a fully automatic weapon and no one can stop them essentially you would have to outlaw knowledge to prevent that from happening and you cant the ability to make and produce semi automatic rifles has been around since the early 1900s it is such an easy task to make semi automatic weapons and fully automatic weapons that people make them in jails out of pipes springs and tape. Some guns such as the sten and m3 (also known as the grease gun can be assembled out sheet metal in some ones basement with out any use of a lathe or mill for most parts only requiring basic milling for some of the internals. Also you claim 50 people dead from the single shooter, currently it is possible that some of them were sadly killed by police counter fire when they tried breaching the wall.

My fourth and final gripe with this article is that it is not informational it does not cover the lives lost due to gang violence which makes up a majority of mass shootings which are done with hand guns that are easily concealed transported and disposed of all while having the rapid fire semi automatic ability that rifles have

I already mailed my Democratic Senators and told them that I will not support them in the next election cycle because of their hypocrisy of filibustering to force a vote on gun control and then having ONE Democrat vote in favor of strengthening NICS and improving reporting of incidents that would prevent someone from owning a gun and that a mere TWO Democrats chose to vote for Cornyn's amendment that was mechanically identical to The Lichess' amendment but respected 5A protections yet almost EVERY Democrat voted in favor of the ones that don't respect your 5A protections.

I told them the damage they did by being gerrymandering hypocrites and directly disrespecting the Constitution (despite one of my Senators being a staunch supporter of 4A protections) means I'm done with them and I'm done with the Democratic party.

It won't matter because they'll win again in the next cycle but maybe they'll at least hear what I'm saying..

“I know there’s a Second Amendment. And, yes, I know that it protects a citizen’s right to defend himself from threats, domestic and foreign.
But the right to bear arms is not a call to use them.”

Examining the Second Amendment, we come across the phrase “A well regulated militia”. The questions that arise from the statement are these; What constitutes a militia? And at what point is it “well regulated”? The answers to these questions comes from two place. The first is 10 U.S Code 311 which states that the militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied male at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are pr who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the Nation Guard. It then describes the two classes of militia, the organized consisting of National Guard and the Naval militia, and then the unorganized militia consisting of militia not apart of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

So, everyone fitting the above is apart of the militia. Now, when is that militia well regulated? The following are from the Oxford Dictionary and bracket within the time of the writing of the Second Amendment

1709: “If a liberal Education has formed in us a well-regulated Appetites and worthy Inclinations”
1714: “The practice of a well-regulated courts of justice in the world.”
1812: “The equation of time..is the adjustment of the difference of time as shown by a well-regulated clock and a true sundial.”
1848: “A remissness for which I am sure every well-regulated person will blame the Mayor.”
1862: “it appeared to her well-regulated mind, like a clandestine proceeding.”
1894: “The newspaper, a never wanting adjunct to every well-regulated American embryo city”

The phrase “well-regulated” was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order.

Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. So, if we are to have a well-regulated militia, we must have an experienced militia. As we expect the National Guard to train and be prepared to answer the call as part of the organized militia, we must also expect the same training from the unorganized in the form of shooting. So, as the right does call for the people to bear arms against the threats you mentioned, it also provides the “call” to use them.

Next part.

“the safest home for children and teens is one without guns. Studies show that thousands of kids die every year in a gun-related incident.”

The most glaring problem here is the basis that this is not to be expected. Yes, a home is more dangerous for kids with guns inside. However, the same can be said for home containing swimming pools, trampolines, and jungle gyms. In fact, homes with a privately owned pool kill more people (and kids) a year than privately owned firearms. Perhaps this shocking fact should call for the banning of dangerous pools? Maybe we should restrict pools to 6’ by 8’ by 2’, register them with the state, then require that any person in the “danger area” around the pool have swim training from a certified instructor, goggles, ear, and nose plugs, a snorkel, and floatys. Yes, this would reduce private fun with pools, but no price is too high for the life of a child, is it not? Or perhaps, we must submit ourselves to the fact that on private property, safety with things such as firearms, pools, scissors, knives, tools, and ect are the responsibility of the residence.

Next Part

childhood suggests that it is a good thing to be comfortable with the tools of violence.”
Our best experts don't know, yet you still insert that it must be helped by the idea that we make violence a part of our national experience. Can you clarify what you mean by this? I find trouble debating this as I have no measure of exactly what violence you consider we have made part of our national experience.

Your treatment of firearms as solely weapons of war ignores their use as tools for hunting, self-defense, and competition as well as their constitutional requirement for a “well-regulated” militia (How can it be working properly, if it does not have the tools which makes it work and become well-regulated?). Firearms have been a part of normal American kid’s childhoods since our founding, it has not been since we have approached modern times that their use has become so rebuked as to seem abnormal to some. Those that continue the tradition of family arms do not do so with ill intent, but to provide training to the youth who will one day be able to own firearms themselves. Is it not better to have upcoming adults learn from someone they trust? To have knowledge and respect for these weapons? We don’t arbitrarily make them comfortable with the tools of violence, we do it so that they do not have irrational fears, misconceptions, or lack trained experience in the arms they may in fact have to take up. In the defense of our country, and as part of the well-regulated militia these youth will one day be a part of, is it not better that they have knowledge of the limitations, dangers, and responsibility that comes with firearm ownership?

“Gun advocates want to normalize the tools of violence by making happy kids-and-gun videos. But the result is another generation of voters and elected officials who think war is not a horror, but just another test of manhood, a geopolitical game of poker where the actual ramifications of weaponry are never considered.”
If we want to prevent the generation you speak of, is it not once again better to have a populace well-versed in firearms and their use? If you make weapons harder to own, harder to train with, harder to have the knowledge of them passed on won’t you get the misconceptions you speak of above? How can you expect those who lack firearms and training with them to know the ramifications of weaponry? Those opposed to gun owners have little instruction in firearm use, yet wish to dictate and tell what the other side should do, seemingly on some moral high ground instead of by intellectual understanding of the questions and knowledge encompassing the problems of gun violence.

Continued final

The founding fathers were highly intelligent men and they built their ideas upon those of other, even more intelligent men. They did not simply decide to protect the right to bear arms because they thought it a swell notion. They thought and debated the issue long and hard (and made very apt conclusions) about what the right means and what the essence of self-defence is and then wrote the constitution based not on its manifestation in the form of firearm, but whether that essence of the whole issue should be protected,
They knew that there was once a time before firearms, and many plans were sent awry when the people who set them in motion failed to anticipate the coming of future advancement. Therefore, the founding fathers struggled to protect rights that would be true regardless of what shape their subject takes, because they did not cut philosophical corners and rationally addressed the heart of the issue. The American Constitution is great precisely because it was written centuries ago, and still applies-it was expressly devised as to remain applicable forever. Smaller minds wish to revise it without deeper though, just for short term solutions, yet, we cannot fall into this trap.
If we want to “stop the cycle of violence” the answer is not to simply “stop the cycle of violence” it is to view the encompassing problems and face the issues with it logically, without bias, and use the answers required to answer these problems regardless of how hard the answer might be.

This. Firing a modern weapon - something that can be effectively operated by a child - is nothing compared to ending up in an actual war-zone.

I really wish veterans would call him out on his shit. I suspect someone who lost their legs to an IED or who suffers from panics every time he hears a loud bang would be able to put that smug cunt in his place.

I don't know why the fuck people think this is a valid bitching point. I'm more likely to die ina car accident if I drive. I'm more likely to get hit by lightning if I stand outside during a storm and wave my dick in the air.

Going to throw in a hat for the Dick Act, AKA the Militia Act of 1903.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia_Act_of_1903

According to the law, if you are a gun-owning citizen not already in the standing military, or the National Guard, you are considered "Reserve Militia".

While portions of the Dick Act related to the National Guard have been altered through time, no other legislation has altered the way "Reserve Militia" is defined.

Sort of, but there's some nuance. But I am pretty sure the guy you're replying to was complaining (justifiably, but with the false implication that ordinary lifting, or for that matter ANY physical activity pursued at a serious level, is perfectly safe) about macrotrauma, rather than microtrauma. Tears across all or most of the thickness of a muscle or connective tissue, not cell-level damage. (except rhabdomyolysis, which is another thing altogether and notoriously associated with crossfit)

Largely synonymous with ethnicity/very large extended family. Especially if we're talking about Ashkenazi Jews, from whom most US Jews are descended. All related more closely to each other than to gen pop, and this shows up in things like frequency of Tay-Sachs, torsion dystonia, Riley-Day, Parkinson's, etc.

There is such a thing as converting to Judaism, but it's vanishingly rare and not accepted by most of the stricter varieties.
