How good are you shooting offhand /k/? surely you can shoot accurately from other positions besides the bench, right? RIGHT?
>>30345949
Not claiming to be able to do that, but I heard from an ex designated marksman that you're expected to reliably hit a 1" target at 500-800 yards from standing position
>>30346109
>reliably put up 1" groups at 500+ yards
What
Perty good, I never shoot from a bench and only occasionally shoot from prone supported.
>>30346341
I can believe this but that's still a pretty tough shot standing. Kneeling or sitting would be easier.
>>30346341
1 inch groups at 500 plus yards standing apparently.
not calling his buddy a liar but his buddy is probably a liar
>>30346367
post groupings
>>30346385
his friend is 100% a liar if he said 1" at 500yds
>>30346378
>>30346385
Oh shit I just realized that he was saying 1 inch not 1 foot. Shit I don't even think most rifles could do that
>>30346385
I'd believe 1', because that's good enough to kill a dude at range
>>30346393
500+ tho
also maybe his friend uses a shooting tripod
>>30346407
1' groups at 500+ is somewhat normal for me but in the prone. Standing at that distance would probably take 5 or so minutes between shots and i consider myself a somewhat decent shot
>>30346109
>reliably hit a 1" target at 500-800 yards from standing position
chris kyle/10 level of bullshit
>>30346109
Anon, someone was taking the piss out of you.
>>30345949
If only most of the ranges around here weren't so anal about shooting positions. My usual place won't even let me practice off hand shooting at the 25yard line anymore because some numb nuts tried it and ND'd over the berm a few months ago.
Best I can manage these days is off hand/sitting/prone from 20m in my back yard with an air rifle. Good enough to hit a c antelope, but nothing to crow about.
I need to save up and buy some land.
>>30346409
1" at 500 yards is .2 MOA. Most rifles can't even do that in a vise. It's total bullshit.
I've never shot a rifle, but I can shoot man sized targets at 70-80 yrds pretty reliably with a pistol.
>>30346109
Stop posting
>>30346439
i imagine you talking like nigel thornberry
>How good are you shooting offhand /k/?
Pretty decent, I think. 4x scope or irons and a sitting position, I hit 13.5in discs pretty consistently at 400 yards and generally hit what I'm aiming for up closer too. I hit them a decent amount standing too, but I can't keep it up for long.
They're 13.5inch in diameter, so it's not like it's some amazing challenge, but it isn't easy either. I really wish the hillside backstop was 100 yards closer to the house. I can walk 100 yards closer, but it's always fucking windy in MN and I want a windbreak.
>>30346109
>expected to reliably hit a 1" target at 500-800 yards
I'm sorry, but that sounds like absolute BS. That would takes some pretty inhuman skill.
>>30345949
I do occasionally shoot from a bench but most of the time (let's say 85-90% is a liberal estimate of how often I shoot off hand) I shoot off hand.
Groupings are next to none with my home-built Jerry-Rigged AK, but I can easily hit man sized targets at 100 yards with my old M48 Mauser.
Which reminds me that I need to finish my FAL; I should be able to achieve factory accuracy with it slightly easier. (2/3 MOA)
>>30346109
There are a lot of rifles that can't do that clamped to a bench.
Like, a lot of them.
>>30345949
Metallic silhouette shooting (off hand) requires at least 1.5 MOA rifle just to be competitive.
You need to shoot about 3 MOA at 500m to reach world class level.
Protip: most people can't do this off the bench.
Protip #2: Just because you did it once doesn't mean anything.

I compete in winter biathlon, so not too shabby.
I mean, I still miss, but who the shit doesn't.
>>30346385
Kek... that guy is not a liar, he's a professional.
/k/, step away from your ego and take that as a goal to work towards, and not a fudd tale. If you can't do it [yet], it doesn't mean it's impossible.
As for "can a rifle do that", read again - designated marksman. His rifle is probably a bit better than your rifle.

>>30345949
Shoot off hands? Hell if they are close enough I can probably take off fingers!
>>30346437
Hint: Chris Kyle is a guy you know about because he could afford to be officially recognized. How about others better than him that you will never know about because they were in places they officially could not have been?

Hint: woosh...

Heh, a professional liar no doubt

They can't. An AX50 probably could, but i don't exactly own one of those beauties so i don't know for sure

I haven't shot my m48 leftie yet, and just did these because i was bored
This topic deserves more attention.
Offhand shooting is one of the more difficult things to master.
I prefer to do it with iron sights or low magnification optics.

The firearms made by Accuracy International are the most accurate rifles in the world. If anybody can do it, the AX50 can

Same, I only have woods around where I live so I'm pretty much an offhand shooter for the most part, at times I use my knee for support but that's about all.
