So what is it that made the optimum capacity of a revolver being 6? Seems to be some sort of unwritten rule and am curious as to why. From /pol/ and curious.

I know (((Leon Nagant))) made a 7 round one for the (((Soviet Union))).

It was the original revolver capacity going back to the 1850s, and was basically the 1850s version of a Tec-9 or Uzi given that all non-revolver pistols were still lolsingleshot. It's a design that has worked well from black powder through modern cartridges. There are ten shot .22lr target revolvers, but most people buying revolvers are getting them in .38 special / .357 magnum or larger so six shots is still a simple, durable design with plenty of punch.

carry the sixth chamber empty with the hammer down

its the fairest compromise between size, structure, materials, ergonomics and firepower.

anything bigger becomes too fucking unwieldy, and if you try to add additional capacity without changing the frame, you jeopardize the safety and integrity of the weapon.

We went the wrong way, we should have made each round larger with less capacity.

Pic related, a dream gun that I will one day get professionally made by a gunsmith and open carry. No joke.

Because far bigger capacity would require relatively precise(and expensive mechanisms) while far lower capacity would be 1) ineffective and 2) would need stronger springs because they have to spin the cylinder further(especially a problem once double-action revolvers appeared).

6 is basically the most optimal option with 5 and 7 being sometimes used because they didn't stray away from the optimum.

The larger the capacity for a given cartridge size, the larger the cylinder has to be. For black powder charges and projectile sizes of the day, and modern metalic cased equivalents, 5~7 fits flush against the cylinder pin with no wasted space. The more capacity you add, the larger the cylinder circumference, and the more wasted space between the working cylinder chambers and the cylinder pin, and notably, the wider the whole cylinder becomes.

See pic related for how much more unwieldy high capacity revolvers become.

And see this video for how the timing of the double row revolver cylinder worked:

This is also why 9~10 shot .22lr revolvers are common. You can fit a lot more .22lr into the working circumference of a 2" wide revolver than you can .357mag.

Remember that revolvers and handguns in general are defensive firearms that must be first and foremost practical to carry.

its a comfortable frame with 6. they make them in 5 shots and with 7 shots but anything after that feels like a flare gun
