Livin Aus sucks sometimes if your into weapons.

Sort of new to /k/ so please understand if this is a stupid question but:

what is better a Mosin or a kar98k?

thinking of getting my hands on one (considering they are both botl action and thats what is allowed)

was watching this video aswell

sort of stupid tests in my opinion but hey...

Sup fellow Ausbro, you should seriously just go and apply for your license tomorrow, it will take a while to get it so you might as well start the process now.

To answer your question, the Mauser is a MUCH better firearm. I love my nugget but i have no trouble admitting its a shitty rifle by design. If you were here right now id tell you to work the action on my two rifles and you'd see that the difference between the two is night and day. The Mauser is very chunky, solid and locks in tight, the mosin nagant is also a tough rifle but it doesnt feel as nice and it makes a hollow rattley sound when you work the action.

There is a reason why we still make mauser action hunting rifles today and not nugget actions

A mosin nagant is like a shitty $500 manual VN commodore. Its a piece of shit but heaps of fun

I'm seriously contemplating buying a block of like 40-100 acres in QLD just for having fun on, they're not that expensive (sub $30K for the 40ish acre bush blocks in some areas), but I don't know if any of you cunts could be bothered driving out as far as I'm looking.

Still, I'd love to do a /k/ meet up, even if it's just at a range.

I live in the Brisbane CBD but I've been looking like Dalby-ish type area, about 2.5-3 hours drive away. If there are better places to do it I'm open to suggestions. Pretty sure 40 acres is the minimum for shooting on.

>>30342517
Where abouts have you been looking? We could buy adjoining blocks and make a 1km range... I do get carried away. Gotta wait til the end of the year anyway, sort some things out.

>>
>>30342632
just realestate.com.au

I went property type "Land" because I just want a block, and I said minimum size 160,000m2 because that's 40 acres. After that you just have to go on google maps and scope out what general areas would be suitable! As I say, I was looking at Dalby-Chinchilla kinda area, but theres heaps to choose from in like a 2-3 hour's drive from Brisbane. Let us know how you go, maybe post an ausfag thread sometime?

Maaaaan that picture has always been a dream of mine, always wanted to chase a mob of pigs around on the quad with my .303, it's removed filthy pests since 1941 and its not about to stop now

Im fortunate enough to have access to a large property with rabbits and foxes. No pigs though
>>
>>30342964
Im hoping it works out for the best with how many have sold here. Still, Im not buying one untill after the review is out
>>
>>30343002
That's the main reason all gun stores have had a large dip in sales recently. No one wants to buy anything with a mag over 5rnds or a lever gun in case they are banned and people are holding on to their money in case the review goes well and we get access to more weapons types.

It's a really weird limbo.
>>
>>30341039

Mosin ammo will almost certainly be easier to get. 7.62x54R is still a standard military cartridge in much of the world, but nobody uses 8mm Mauser anymore.

As for the rifles themselves most people acknowledge that the Mauser is better (pretty much all modern bolt actions are based on the Mauser design) but the Mosin is still a sturdy, good quality rifle just like any of those old milsurps are. The Mosin is almost certainly much less expensive to purchase and kept fed. So it's up to you, the Mauser is better quality (but not THAT much) but about 3x the cost or more.

>weird limbo
Thats exactly how i feel about the whole thing, i change my mind about it every day. One day ill be optimistic about the whole thing and ill expect some common sense will prevail and we'll merge cat A,B and C together since cat C firearms are functionally only splitting hairs difference from cat A firearms. Supressors getting brought in too as a health and safety thing

Then the next day ill change my mind and ill be sure were getting totally fucked over by something stupid like an arbitrary magazine limit of 5 (get rekt all lee enfields) or banning all rapid fire lever actions (good bye family heirloom win 94)

All i can hope for is that a lot of the big firearm companies and importers will work behind the scenes and turn things around for us so that everybody wins. can you imagine the money involved if over a million shooters were suddenly able to buy 10/22's 870's etc, we'd have the largest firearms imports we'd ever seen
>>
>>30343032
>>30343142
Mag cap of 5
Detachable mags banned
Lever action Cat C
Straight Pull Cat C
Competition shooting mandatory (like on Cat H)

That's what I'm honestly expecting no joke.

>>
>>30340984
Amerifat here.

See if you can find an Enfield.

Preferably a No 1 MK4.

Acquire two extra magazines.

They are versatile and accurate weapons.

Cycling the bolt is easily done after shooting, unlike with a Mosin. .303 is also still widely available and is easily reloaded.
>>
>>30340984
Almost any Mauser is better than a Mosin desu
>>
>>30340984

>>30346289

between any mauser and a 91/30, I'd take any mauser that is not in an obsolete cartridge.

Between like a M39 or 28/76 nuggets and a K98, I'd take the finnish nuggets.

I honestly like the enfield action over both, but I only have a jungle carbine and it is not very fun to shoot.
>>
>>30341035
>>30340984

Also look for a Ishapore 7.62x51mm conversion cause the .308 Winchester is interchangable and much easier to come buy than .303 British.

That picture really makes your heart sing hey. I'd love to try hunting from my dirt bike eventually, maybe with a pump action 7615 or 7600.

Where abouts is your farm? Have you ever thought of going to one of those farms that facilitate recreational shooters? From what I've seen on the internet, they just require you to have a SSAA membership for insurance and be licensed. Then it's like $70 a night to camp or stay in some shearers quarters or whatever and hunt to your heart's content. Might be an ideal way to do a /k/ meetup, that way no-ones having to bear the initial risk of allowing strangers off the internet in to your house.

>>30342964
>>30343142
I agree man, there's no logical reason that semi-auto rimfires or suppressors are illegal. There's no mandate for tightening gun control either, but that doesn't stop these lefty fanatics I guess. Did you guys catch that peer reviewed study a little while ago showing that there was no statistically provable benefit in crime from Australia's gun law's post 1996?

Reckon there's any chance of them banning pump action centrefires? Fuck it's frustrating how pointless this shit is, driven by political dogma by people who would never even pick up a gun because they think it's so disgusting. Wish they'd leave us to have our fun....
>>

Don't get either OP, we don't get surplus rounds here in AUS and you will be paying around $2 per shot for factory loads like Highlander or CCP and they are not even match grade, just shitty lead tipped hollow points.

Spend the few extra dollarydoos and get a decent modern rifle in something .223 to .308 and you won't look back. You will get a better shooter with cheaper ammo.

>>
>>30353270
No one knows just yet m80. on one hand, the review recommended that we reduce red tape and streamline the whole firearms system, which is a plus. Also we supposedly have "key industry stakeholders" and a few other guys on our side being part of the review.

On the other hand, who knows what the real agenda behind the NFA review is, cant trust our government to do the right thing rather than fuck us over.

Ive been watching so many videos on 1893's and 10/22's on youtube in excitement at the idea of owning one in a few months. I should probably stop so i dont get let down

Nobody used 8mm? It's practically the .30-06 of Europe.

K98 fag here, and I love my fucking 8mm.

Of course, there are plenty of rebarreled Mauser rifles in .30-06, and .308. Seen them in .270 before as well. I'm sure there are others, but these are the most common that I've seen rebarreled from 8mm.

Of course, Spanish FR-7/8 Mausers come in .308 from the jump and I always hear great things. Plan on getting one myself.

Mauser > Mosin any day. Although I really do miss my '43 Mosin PU very fucking much.

>Mauser is better quality
>Not by THAT much

Bro pls. Pick up a German 98, and a Russian 91/30 and say that with a straight face. Not knocking the Mosin, but goodness m8 get real.
>>
>>30354591

When I said nobody uses 8mm I meant that it's not a standard issue military cartridge anymore, 7.62x54 is, so you can buy it in bulk and for cheap.

Also desu there are differences between WW2 era bolt actions, but imo they're all pretty negledgable. Is the Mauser better? Sure, but is it better enough to warrant 3x the price or more? Not in my opinion.
>>
>>30354774
Well yeah nobody has issued 8mm since like, the 50s? If memory serves. But PPU makes really good ammunition for $20 a box which really isn't that bad. If I can afford to shoot it, I'm sure most can.
Surplus still goes for cheap too if you can find it, certainly isn't as hard as finding .22LR lol.

You have to understand the amount of K98s in circulation versus the M91/30.

K98s that haven't been fucking bubba'd, or fucked up in some way are hard to find. Granted, Bubba's Mosins are plentiful, but there are so many originals in circulation, and some that haven't even been put into circulation yet, this fact making them a cheaper rifle.

The cost rises with scarcity, not in terms of quality. So good K98s are naturally going to demand a bit of a prettier penny.

I got my Russian Cap '41 K98 fairly cheap, but they'll just continue to climb in price as the years go on. I'd suggest finding and purchasing a decent K98 to anyone because of this. The same will eventually happen with Mosin rifles, so people ought to have an example of at least one of each rifle.

But that's just me of course.
>>
>>30354774
>>30354854
To add though, plenty of Mauser copies out there going for cheap. Yugos go for like $200-$300 these days for example depending on the area and the condition, as well as the Turk variants as another anon stated ITT.

Nothing like a good K98 for the most part, but it's the action itself that people really want. People make some really nice tack drivers using the Mauser action and a bit of know how. Can't really say the same for the Mosin, outside of sticking the poor thing in an Archangel stock with some shit tier Bubba mods.

Again, I'm a lover of a good ol' Nugget. But a Mauser is definitely worth investing in over one of them.
