/k/ Send Help. Sooner rather than later I will be buying an EDC/home defense pistol and need recommendations. I need a list of pistols that aren't too expensive (less than $1000) that are chambered in 9mm.

Except a few, most of these guns preform reliably. it all comes down to how they feel in the hand and the end fit and finish.
It's best to go to a gun store and finger fuck a bunch and maybe rent a few to see what feels best.

Glock 19.
I'd get a Gen 3.
Then buy some new sights (roughly spend $100-$150, trijicon, truglo, ameriglo, HSP thirteens are what I like they use trijicon inserts)
I'm betting you don't know anyone who can do a good stipling job so just but talon grips or decal grips they're super cheap and really enhance the grip and feel for me personally. Gen 3s are a tad too slick for me.
Then go buy some magazines. I'd stay away from anything not from glock and I'd also advise against extended mag plates. Just buy G17 mags and the 33rd mags if you have need for the firepower.
Then lots of ammo to practice with.
If you don't go overboard on mags and ammo you could probably also fit a sure fire XC-1 on your budget and be ok.
IF you just hate the way the glock feels then get literally any 9mm handgun they have that's not an off brand. Ruger, Smith, CZ, Walther, H&K, there's tons of good handguns and they will all function.
Just know with the glock you're getting a near limitless supply of aftermarket support and replacement parts and accessories like holsters are sold literally everywhere around the country basically wherever guns are sold.
Glock are FAR from "the best" at any one thing but they're like ARs in the fact that nearly everyone who owns guns has at least one and you can lightly customize them to suit your preference.
There are even custom slides you can get but I'd stay away from messing with the internals.

1911 or a CZ 75. That's what I'm looking at right now. Or you could get some real stopping power and get something chambered in 357 magnum.

I heard some guy saying giving the m9 and p226 shit capacity was a "conscious decision by the designers" so that the mags didn't get worn out so fast. Any truth to that?

No offense, but that is the terrible way to start looking a pistol that fits to your needs.
IMO you should first come up with some ideas about what you are looking for, for example:
- Revolver or pistol.
- Size: Full size, compact or subcompact.
- Caliber: .380, 9 mm Luger, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .38, .357 or what...
Once you have decided about those, the list will be much more manageable. Personally I would probably go with 9 mm pistol - there is huge variety of pistols of all kinds available in that caliber, you get good magazine capacity for size and the ammo is cheap. Terminal ballistics wise practical choices for centerfire pistol or revolver ammo do not have any real difference.
