Hey /k/, I'm considering buy an M1A scout squad.

Anyone have one that they can tell me their thoughts on? Anything I should be aware of? Is it worth the $1400 price tag?

It is a fun blaster. I get 2-3 moa with surplus ammo with a Burris 2-7 pistol scope mounted up front. The front scope mount gets really hot so cheap red dots might fry.
>>
>>30321849

If it's for fun you'll be fine. If it's for practicality there are so many better options for you out there.
>>
>>30321926
Like what?
>>
>>30321928

Don't listen to him. The M1A is far superior to .308 ARs.
>>
>>30321928
Not him but rifle itself is fine, its just the "scout squad recon super sneeki rifle with scope in a different spot means its lighter and more nimble" meme is complete horseshit
>>
>>30322017
As I understand the concept, the forward scope mount has more to do with being able to shoot with both eyes open and retaining peripheral vision.

I don't actually care about that much, I was going for that model for the 18" barrel rather than the 22" standard model. There's solutions for using the forward rail with standard scopes anyway.
>>
>>30321928

In terms of raw combat performance a SCAR 17 is the only way to go for a semi-auto .308

I'm guessing that's a bit outside your budget so for a similar price tag to the scout squad you could get an excellent AR10-style weapon or a PTR which isn't made of Brazilian pot metal like the Springfield.

>As I understand the concept, the forward scope mount has more to do with being able to shoot with both eyes open and retaining peripheral vision.

You can do that with any rifle but not every optic will have the eye relief to allow you to place it so far forward from where your cheek will be welded.

>In terms of raw combat performance a SCAR 17 is the only way to go for a semi-auto .308

>never heard of the FAL
>>
>>30322167

I'm not saying the FAL is a bad choice, just that it's an inferior choice to a SCAR 17. This is an objective fact.
>>
>>30322210
Not that I can afford one but what exactly makes the SCAR so much better than other rifles?
>>
>>30322243
4 different greens
>>
>>30322243

Lighter, more modular, and more accurate than other rifles of its role. There's a reason Delta and other SOF units are going with the SCAR and have mothballed or are mothballing their M14s/EBRs, FALs, and G3s. The only serious competitor the SCAR 17 has in its role is the HK417
>>
>>30322264
I don't get it.
>>
>>30322315
Then you have literally never seen a SCAR

Ambi controls
More accurate for the money discounting that LRB and Fulton Armory build expensive high-end M1A's

Free floated barrel
Modern sight picture
Lighter
Stock adjustments
I THINK it's gas adjustable

That said it offers very little over say compared to an AR-10/SR-25 platform

It has the tiny rail which can be awkward with bipods, and the exposed hot barrel can be a dealbreaker, and the barrel is only pencil profile IIRC so it doesn't stabilize match loads as well as the M1A or AR10 with more rigid barrel profiles

>>30321940
>go back to /b/
>>
>>30322337
I'm having trouble understanding how the barrel can be free floating. I'm not particularly well versed in semi-auto operation but doesn't the piston need to be attached to the barrel somewhere?

>>30322105
Which brands of AR-10s (or components) are preferred? I could go the 80% route if I decide to do an AR-10 but I've read here that there is a potential for compatibility problems.
>>
>>30322682
I've read that DPMS stuff is actually really quite good for the money, despite that their AR-15 line is pretty so-so quality wise. Do your research though before you buy anything. AR-10 stuff is not nearly as standardized as AR-15 components.

I bought an Springfield loaded m1a awhile back and I could never find a handload that the bitch actually liked. That and it was heavy as sin like 13lbs empty with a scope. Sold it a month later and bought an AR-10. Also the cheek weld with a scope is absolutely terrible Imo. There are so many better alternatives but if you have a boner for it go right ahead.
>>
>>30323603
Well, I was most drawn to it because of the relatively low price for a .308 semi and I like the aesthetic lines of it. Something about AR styling is just a real turn off for me. Probably just because it's so ubiquitous and I like to be a special snowflake.
>>
>>30323741
If you want a .308 semi that's not an AR, get a PTR-91 or a VEPR (K-Var rechambers them for .308 from 7.62x54r).

I have one, bought it for $1600 a year or two ago. It's one of my favorite guns, super fun to shoot, but it's easy to run into problems if you don't know what you're doing. I thought I permafucked the rifle once, but it turns out I accidentally force-closed my gas system and now the thing runs like a champ. The other day I took it out to the range with some friends and we spent most of the time shooting headshots on paper targets of allahu akbars at 150 yards with iron sights, and we had a fucking blast. It's not exactly cheap to shoot compared to my AK, but it's not exactly impossible, either.

Buy a fal or a g3 clone both can be had for we'll under 1k
>>
>>30321849
>Tfw filthy syrups can have good M14 clones for ~$700 that simply need a bit of polishing internally
Now that's not fair. Stupid chink gun bans.
>>
I've been very pleased with my M1A Scout. It's the perfect length, balances well, and is a ton of fun to shoot. I'm 6'1", for the record.

You can build a slightly more accurate AR-10 for the same price, but unless you're planning to do lots of very long-range shooting, M1A is more than sufficient. It can reportedly do 1 MOA with the right ammo.

It's also great for Calguns folks like yours truly. Since the M1A is a "featureless" aka non-scary rifle, it accordingly needs no bullet button.

You can also easily suppress it in many non-California US jurisdictions:

Regarding ammo, I've got a case of Turkish-made, NATO-spec FMJ from ZQI which came in at ~42 cents a round. Expect factory ammo to run just shy of 50 cents/round in general.
>>
>>30324315
I use the ZQI as well. It's decent stuff, but it's not terribly accurate past 50 yards I find.
>>
>>30323603

Compared to the full-size M1A, the Scout is quite light and easy to carry / handle. Source: have handled both.
>>
>>30323603
40gr imr 3031 pushing berger hybrid 168s out of a ppu case yielded me sub moa with my m1a. Too bad you didnt have luck.
>>
>>30324228
Thought the chink bolts are softer too, and prone to stress cracking on the ears.

Dimensionally, they require reciever modificaion to drop a usgi bolt into 1/3 of the time.

>>30321849
rented one at a range. scared the hell out of someone who was standing behind me on the firing line (indoor range) if I had $15-1600 to spend I would get one. Guy I spoke to at the fun store said he owned one and had a aftermarket stock with pistol grip and adjustable stock, might want to look into that too.

Definitely some nice modern M1A stocks. Pic related from Google Images.

I just came
>>
>>30324382
Yeah, I would definitely be making some incremental changes if got one. Aftermarket stocks were the first thing I checked for.
