if you can grandfather them in, nothing will change for people who already own them. except parts and ammo will be fucking expensive.
if you can't grandfather them in, i'll just stick it in the safe (or bury it). because like hell am i going to register it. i've never filled out a 4473 for my guns, so it's not like they're going to bust in and shoot my dog over something they have no info on.

Nope. They'd give the law an effective date several months out in the future (laws are almost never effective immediately) and they'd leave it up to manufacturers to deal with that problem.

An anecdote:
I've seen a lot of people my age (18) think that sniper rifles are regulated differently than non-sniper rifles. When I explain to them that they are just rifles with scopes slapped on they usually go "oh.... But isn't it a special rifle? Don't you need s a special permit for a sniper?"

I would say that while he has a point, we still do have a working political process, and until it is no longer feasible we have to fight those laws that strip us of our rights nonviolently, in courts and in congress.
There exists an extrajudicial system of surveillance, arrest, imprisonment, and torture yes. Our government has broken its mandate, no way around it (all the more reason to NOT GIVE THEM YOUR GUNS btw), but the sad truth is that this doesn't affect the majority of people and has its own psuedo-legal niche. It's the end result of declaring war on an enemy that doesn't fly a flag; anybody could be tried as an "enemy combatant."
